About Alicia

We fell in love with Turkey many years ago, and in 2012 built Villa Huzur, which became our much-loved and much-needed antidote to our life and work in Moscow, Russia. Huzur means "peace and tranquility" in Turkish and we experience that every time we come. Our hope is that everyone who stays here gets to experience 'huzur'. We have four grown children who live in New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Costa Rica, and we look forward to many years of sharing this house with them, our large extended family, friends and guests. Each time we come we discover something new. We feel grateful and privileged to have a home here.

Alicia purchased this villa in 2012

Why Alicia chose Lycian & Turquoise Coast

When I first visited Islamlar I fell in love with it. It felt like another world, a slower pace, surrounded by nature, peace and quiet. The smells of pine and wild thyme, the abundance of olive trees, grapevines, pomegranate orchards, orange and lemon trees took my breath away.

We decided to build a traditional stone and wood house but with all the comfort and luxury of a modern home.

I love the village, the smiles and generosity of our neighbors, hearing the children playing in the local school, waking to the sound of goats, chickens or the call to prayer. Sitting out at night under the incredibly clear stars and hearing owls hooting. The area feels remote, like being in another time, but is only 15 minutes away from bustling Kalkan. I love going to the weekly markets and filling my basket with wonderful fruit and veg, fresh fish, local bread, cheese and honey.

What makes this villa unique

We love the peace and quiet, experiencing village life, walking in the olive groves and vineyards, the pine forests, or through the village. We love to swim in our own pool while admiring the changing views of the sea and the mountains. Having a day punctuated by the call to prayer from the local mosque echoing round the valley. Discovering different birds at different times of the year. Having freshly squeezed pomegranate and orange juice for breakfast every day! We are within 30 minutes drive of many of the major Lycian ruins, so it is easy to go and visit in the afternoons, after spending time relaxing by the pool. We are constantly amazed by the beauty and diversity of this part of Turkey, from mountains, to valleys, to beaches and islands, there is always something to see or do.

Notes on accommodation: Surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and pine forests Villa Huzur was built in the traditional style using local stone and wood, emanating simple, tasteful luxury. It has been designed for year-round use, with air conditioning/heating in every room plus a log fire and underfloor heating. We have used local materials and local tradesmen, and furnished it with Turkish rugs, cushions, furniture and artwork to make the house comfortable and personal. The property offers private, spacious and relaxed living, inside and out. The elevation of 700 meters provides a light breeze and cooler temperatures than the heat of the coast in summer. Outside: The house is set on a hillside with a seasonal stream running down the side of the property. It has an olive grove on the hill behind, and several garden areas with fruit trees and shady areas to sit. There is a huge travertine terrace surrounding the house, with a private saltwater infinity pool, stone barbecue, outdoor dining table and chairs, shaded cushioned seating area, sun-beds, large parasols and outdoor shower. There is a vegetable garden for guests' use with a raised cushioned seating area shaded by a grapevine for lazy afternoons. There is a shaded garage area and parking for 2-3 cars. There is a portable fire pit and a basket of fleece blankets to wrap up in on chilly evenings under the stars. This is a peaceful and quiet area with only the sound of birds, the odd cockerel, goats and chickens, and the evocative call to prayer from the mosque echoing around the valley to remind you this is a country with a rich and diverse cultural history. Utility Room: There is a separate utility room with washing machine, iron and ironing board. There are covered washing lines outside where clothes dry within hours, and an internal drying rack for a wet day in winter. There is a separate WC downstairs. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bath towels, pool towels and linen are provided and will be changed weekly when the property is cleaned. The pool and terrace are cleaned daily. Bayram and Zainab look after the house for us. You can call them if you have questions or need anything.

Turkish Delight

  • 5 of 5

We choose the Villa Huzur to host our family reunion as it ticked all our boxes - private, spacious, clean, comfortable, scenic, infinite pool, outdoor dining, well appointed - and indeed it was all these and more. Fun, laughter, great meals, swimming, sun bathing, archaeology and great beaches. Recommended for all those who want a great holiday to renew friendship and create everlasting memories.

A Spectacular Oasis Overlooking the Sea

  • 5 of 5

I visited Villa Hazur in late May for a week with friends, and found a little slice of heaven. It is a stunning home, with beautiful views down to the sea and a welcoming atmosphere. It is elegant in it’s sophisticated simplicity and open floor plan as well as the comfortable furnishings and Turkish appointments. Peacefully nestled into the hills of Islamlar, 10 minutes above the sea in Kalkan, it is surrounded by lush flower and vegetable gardens, olive and pomegranate trees, and has lots of privacy from neighbors. There are so many beautiful, shaded places to relax, a gorgeous infinity pool, lounges, large terraces, outdoor barbecue, and shower, that it was easy to be together or find space alone. The well-appointed kitchen affords a wonderful spaciousness to cook and entertain together. And a great selection of DVD’s and books for down time.

Rent a car! The countryside is lush and beautiful and from this great location, we visited numerous ruins within an hour’s drive, Saklikent Gorge for a little hiking adventure, Kalkan for shopping and dining, and Kas, which requires a beautiful drive along the coast, for its famer’s markets, shops, and we even took a day trip to Meis, Greece on a ferry, where we spent a relaxing day walking around the island looking at the ruins and the architecture and had a long, luxurious afternoon eating a meal by the water watching the sea turtles swim by.

I loved every minute of being there and cannot wait to return. The people are warm and friendly and there was never a thought of not being safe here in this beautiful country. The owner couldn’t have been more gracious and wonderful in preparing and sharing this beautiful home. The reality is even better than the pictures!

An exquisite unforgettable experience

  • 5 of 5

In a secluded village that is almost two hous from Dalaman airport, it is hard to believe that there is a modern villa with an infinity pool, an awesome view, to provide you with a beautiful memory, and a relaxed vacation. But it is true.

The villa is quite large, having three bedrooms and can easily host 5-6 people. It is extremely clean, and very well equipped. From the nut cracker, to the promegrnate juicer, to the bed mosquito net if you fancy using one: Villa Huzur seems to have it all.

We especially liked the hospitality attitude that governed the experience. Feel free to use all the condiments you may find. If you emoty something, be considerate and refill it for the next tenant.

The owner was quite helpful and fast responding to our inqiuries and concerns. We loved our stay so much, and we hope we can repeat it again.

Amazing villa in the mountains above Kalkan

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at about midnight on our first day following a transfer from Dalaman airport - we used a company called Define Tours who were excellent - we also hired a car from them which they delivered to the villa the next day (would recommend the Dacia Duster we had which coped with some of the rugged roads well). We were met by the caretaker of the villa (Bayram) who was very friendly and showed us around the villa. The next day we awoke to the most amazing views from the bedroom window of the valley below the villa and the sea around Kalkan. The villa has been appointed to a very high standard and everything inside and outside is made using high quality materials. Air conditioning throughout which was needed on some nights. The pool area is excellent with a 10m infinity pool which overlooks the valley and the sea and has comfortable sun loungers. The shaded seating areas provided a great place to sit and relax. The outside eating area is also shaded with a huge parasol - another 3 huge parasols around the pool provide ample shading during the hottest part of the day. The villa is secluded and even though there is another villa nearby it felt very private. Islamlar village centre is just over half a km away and has a couple of shops for bread and basic food items. The land at the back of the villa was great for exploring (we came across a tortoise one day!). Overall we had a fantastic holiday at this comfortable and secluded villa and would definitely come back again.

Villa Huzur is genuinely top notch

  • 5 of 5

We (5 of us) had a most wonderful 2 week stay at Villa Huzur. Correspondence with the owners was easy, prompt and helpful. We arrived just after the attempted coup (2016) & expected to experience some impact, at least at the Dammam airport. This was trouble free and very secure without being intimidating, elsewhere was completely normal. We strongly recommend renting a car as there is so much open to you. The Villa is on the fringe of Islamlar and both are delightful. The local food is exceptional both in quality and value. The images perfectly reflect the accommodation standard. We will definitely return.

Book it - you won't regret.

Wonderful Villa in beautiful mountain setting

  • 5 of 5

3 generations in our party all loved Villa Huzur - a great place to relax and unwind in the lovely lush mountain above Kalkan. Perfect accommodation with lots of room inside and outside. Comfortably furnished with a good mix of modern furniture with lovely Turkish touches. We loved the many different places outside in which to sit and relax. There are great local restaurants in Islamlar, within walking distance while the pretty tourist town of Kalkan is a relatively short (but steep) drive away. Both the owner and the local manager are very friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend Villa Huzur to anyone who wants to feel close to authentic rural Turkey but not too far from the coast - best of both worlds! Hope to go back soon.

Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

For those interested in hiking the Lycian way, several parts of the trail are in the area and the best time for this is off season, as it is cooler. You can go horse riding, canoeing, kayaking and diving. There are bird watching and botanical excursions available as well as a multitude of ancient Lycian ruins to visit, including Patara, Xanthos, Letoon, Myra, Sidyma, Pinara, Tlos etc. You can visit the Greek island of Meis for the day, or the spectacular Saklikent Gorge, try paragliding in Kas, or take a boat trip to visit the sunken city of Kekova, visit the fascinating ruins of an abandoned Greek village on the hillside of KayaKoy near Fethiye; the possibilities and diversity of this part of Turkey are endless.

The closest beach and beach clubs are 15 minutes drive away in Kalkan. Kaputas beach is beautiful and half way between Kalkan and Kas, about 20 minutes drive. The famous 12 kms long sandy beach of Patara, where Loggerhead turtles still nest, is next to the ruins of the ancient Lycian city of Patara, just 20 minutes drive.

Due to the rural nature of the house a car is essential. The closest airport is Dalaman, about 1.5 hours drive. Antalya is the next closest, with a beautiful 2.5 hour drive over the mountains, or 3.5 along the scenic coast road. You can rent a car from the airport, or book an airport transfer and pick up your rental in Kalkan. We can assist with arranging airport transfers and car rental.

Kalkan is 10-15 minutes away. Kas is 30 minutes along the stunningly beautiful coast road. Patara beach and ruins are 20 minutes away.

Fethiye is an hours drive.

Further Details:

Islamlar, which has a working water-driven flour mill, is known for its delicious trout restaurants, whose trout pools are fed by mountain streams, and has a small local shop and barbers.

The idyllic town of Kalkan on Turkey's dramatic Turquoise Coast nestles at the foot of the Taurus Mountains above a small, picturesque harbour. Its colourful, narrow lanes are lined with small shops selling antiques, carpets, jewellery, leather goods and souvenirs. Whitewashed houses with shuttered windows and carved timber balconies tumbling with bougainvillea, lead down to an ancient harbour, where Kalkan's many rooftop restaurants and pavement cafes are located. From here, overlooked by a white mosque, the fish are brought ashore in the morning and the wooden gullets sail out on their day trips around the bays and outlying islands. More practical outlets such as small supermarkets, chemists, and banks with ATM machines are to be found higher up the main street, away from the harbor.

Kas is a 30 minute drive along the spectacular coast road. As in Kalkan, there are plenty of boat trips and diving trips on offer at the harbour, and tandem paragliding for the more adventurous. Lots of interesting shops and good cafes and restaurants in the old part of town, plus beach clubs and cafes for relaxing and swimming.

The climate in Turkey is similar to southern California, and the sea is the colour of turquoise. Whether you want to relax by your own pool or on sun-drenched beaches, visit ancient sites, or shop at local markets, there is something for everyone here. Consider also coming off season, during half term or Easter holidays, where there are still limitless charms and activities to enjoy. This coast has 300 days of sunshine a year, so you have a good chance of sunny weather most of the time. We swam in the sea in early November and it was delightful.
