About Fenella Elms

Fenella Elms, ceramics artist, works in the workshop at the far end of the long cottage. You will find some of her work in the barn and by prior arrangement you are welcome to visit the workshops to find out more during your stay.

Why Fenella Elms chose Wiltshire

Alma Barn is attached to the end of a cottage where the owners, the Elms family, have lived for nearly 20 years. In this time the barn has been used for horses, cattle and lambing before special listing permission was given to restore the barn to make a holiday let from 2012.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We stayed on New Years Eve, wanting peace following a difficult year. We received a very warm welcome and could not fault our stay, every little detail had been so carefully thought of. Fantastic!" (Toprooms Jan. 2013)

"That night we find rural peace in an exquisitely converted self-catering barn in the lovely village of Aldbourne, where sheep bleat and horses clop past as we eat morning croissants before a gigantic window, overlooking frost-rimmed fields" (Nicholas Roe, travel writer in The Times Dec. 2012)

"What a lovely cottage, everything all so well designed and over thought. Good energy here! We hope to back next year to satisfy our new addiction: crop circles!" (visitors from Holland and Germany, July 2012)

"A very well equipped and comfortable place to stay - thank you. We especially appreciated the little extra touches of flowers and fresh fruit. We look forward to a return visit to this little oasis!" (visitors from Scotland, October 2012)

Beautiful barn with beautiful surroundings

We were recommended Alma Barn from friends and it did not disappoint. Absolutely stunning countryside and a peaceful village to match. Great pubs nearby or a short car journey to neighbouring towns. We are coming back for sure!

Thank you so much for the perfect location to just "be". This was a very difficult trip for me to England and this barn made it so much easier to relax.

We thought it was lovely

  • 5 of 5

We really loved staying in this barn and had a great New Years time chilling and relaxing. The owners were great and it's in a perfect location. Disappointing to see the owners give me a low rating, as they haven't contacted me to discuss any issues with cleanliness or communication so not sure why they felt the need to do this?

It's a shame but I don't believe in responding in kind, so I will still rate this place highly, perhaps in future they will think differently about their response.

PERFECT setting in a lovely little community

  • 5 of 5

We were a family of 4 visiting from Canada. We love staying in VRBOs with kids because no one likes a motel room for more than a night with two kids. This space was just fantastic!! The kids thought the loft style was really neat and us adults just thought the space was beautiful. We loved the little general store in town who provided any odds and sods we might have forgotten. My husband took a trip into the pub for a night and was warmly welcomed and chatted about the history of the area. We'd highly recommend this space to anyone looking for an escape to the country. It was perfect for us. We appreciated the amenities and it was a well stocked kitchen which is refreshing when you are traveling to more than one location on an overseas trip. All in all a truly lovely place to stay!!!

My wife and I loved our stay in Alma Barn. It is beautiful, comfortable a great location to enjoy Albourne where we lived 25 years ago. This historic village (home to Easy Company of Band of Brothers prior to D Day) is thriving and as charming as ever. We also enjoyed the lovely local walks on the Downs and certainly plan to return much sooner next time.
