About Quentin Macfarlane

I have lived at Wood Cottage since November 2010 and make it available for holiday lets for about 9 months a year while I enjoy my retirement mostly abroad. Wood Cottage is not like most holiday lets; it is actually my home, full of the things I've brought back from around the world over the years. I chose it partly because of the large, wooded, garden and also because of its fantastic views of the mountains to the west and sea to the east.

Quentin Macfarlane purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Quentin Macfarlane chose Arbroath

Lovely place in an elevated place near the sea and one of the best (and often deserted) beaches on the east coast.

What makes this cottage unique

Wood Cottage is only 20 miles from Dundee but quiet enough to seem like it's in the middle of nowhere.

Notes:
Minimum stay - 3 nights. Wood Cottage looks 'traditional' but in fact was built in 2006 so it's well insulated. It's 'cosy' rather than 'posh'! Has a piano badly in need of being played! No smoking in the cottage please. Although there are three bedrooms, a comfortable maximum occupancy, in terms of space and facilities, is four adults although it can accommodate five. The cottage is about 70m (200ft) above sea-level with superb views of Lunan Bay and the open sea to the east and the Angus hills to the west. The village of Auchmithie can be accessed on foot by a track next to the cottage (1 mile) or by road (3 miles). The But 'n' Ben at Auchmithie and Gordon's Restaurant at nearby Inverkeillor offer first class cuisine but booking is essential. Wood Cottage is surrounded by a pleasant ,secure and well maintained garden with an abundance of flowers, shrubs and mature trees. There are two garden sheds (one used as a small workshop) and a polytunnel. The large garden includes a small area of woodland with about 20 mixed trees-great for kids to explore. There's also a picnic table and benches. A small barbecue is available. Sit out in the garden and enjoy the views! Off road car parking for two vehicles. The nearest shop at 3 miles away. The utility room houses the central heating boiler. It has a deep traditional sink, washing machine and tumble dryer. Also serves as a drying room for outdoor clothes and for storing golf club etc. All bed linen and towels are included in the price and are changed weekly unless otherwise agreed. The cottage is thoroughly cleaned and tidied every Saturday for new arrivals. The garden room also serves as the dining room. Watch goldfinchs, coal tits and chaffinchs at the bird feeders while you eat! This is a lovely, bright room with loads of books to borrow on birds, gardens and the great outdoor

Loved it and are going back

  • 5 of 5

Wood Cottage is truly a home from home. Everything about the cottage and grounds just work. Everything is comfortable. Everything seems in the right place. If we were looking for a place of our own we would choose it. It's so up our street we are going back and have booked. Very close to the sea/beach too, just about 20 minute stroll. Walk to the Butt n Ben also feasible.

Peaceful and tranquil cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was our 3rd visit and we were not disappointed. Wood Cottage is a lovely warm and homely cottage which is clean and well equipped. The cottage is in a super rural area with beautiful views from every window. It is a good place to explore Angus and Perthshire or if you want tranquility sitting in the sun lounge watching the various birds is an easy past time. Thank you Quentin for your attentiveness and allowing us to stay in Wood Cottage - looking forward to the next visit. Linda, Scarborough

Holiday haven

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed all over Scotland through the years, always staying in self catering cottages and houses, and I have to say this one is a gem.

A well equipped cottage, very clean and yet homely, we were blessed with good weather for our 14 days, and the garden was full of wildlife, due I am sure to location and the wonderful planting skills of the owner.

Views from the lounge and bedroom windows were a heady mix of fields of golden wheat and beyond coastline. The owner's library is available to guests and extensive, a shame we only had two weeks, we will return, it truly is a home from home.

A 'Wee' Haven

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Wood Cottage, to which we hope to return. The cottage is ideally situated for amazing views, in a peaceful location, and not far from amenities. The cottage is very well equipped, with a lovely 'garden room' where we spent many a happy hour, a cosy sitting room, and bedrooms equipped with 'king'sized beds in two of the three rooms. Every window offered a picture perfect view. During our stay we visited The Kelpies in Stirling, enjoyed a lovely meal at the nearby But ' n Ben restaurant in Auchmithie, calling in some lovely little places travelling to and from Aviemore. We strolled along golden beaches at Lunan Bay and Montrose. It was such a treat to return after each outing to Wood Cottage.

Lovely peaceful cottage.

  • 5 of 5

A truly wonderful cottage! We had a fabulous week at Wood Cottage, it is very well equipped, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. Our son especially enjoyed paying the piano. The garden is a real haven & we loved sitting in the early morning sunshine listening to the birds. We had great communication from the cottage owner & felt really at home at Wood Cottage. Would not hesitate to recommend it.

Inspiring

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is just perfect in every way. Watching the sunset over Arbroath and sunrise over the bay is a must. Auchmithie is a place of sheer beauty where hours can be spent exploring. This cottage is a must for anyone looking to enjoy the peace and serenity it has to offer with many a good book thrown in too!

Location

If you are interested in the ancient world two local sites are certainly worth a visit: there are four Pictish stones at Aberlemno (16 miles) and there's an important collection of over 30 Pictish carved stones at St Vigeans Museum which is only 6 miles away (visits are by prior arrangement through Abroath Abbey-01241 878756). There's also a medieval standing stone, the Camus Cross, at Downie Hills near Carnoustie.

If Highland Games are your thing there are lots to choose from. Here are a few examples: Drumtochty (25 miles), Stonehaven (35m), St Andrews (33m), Perth (42m), Blairgowrie and Rattray (37m) .

Wood Cottage is less than a mile from the sea and slightly inland of the coastal village of Auchmithie accessed on foot ( 1 mile by track) or by road (3 miles). Auchmithie is a former fishing village with a disused harbour and stony beach. Lunan Bay, with its magnificent curved sweep of sand, is also accessible on foot (4 miles) or by car (3 miles then a 1 mile walk). Alternatively you could drive to the official car park (8 mls) where you'll also find the new Lunan Farm cafe and shop.

Wood Cottage is 4 miles north of Arbroath on the 'back road' to Inverkeillor. If using a a sat nav the co-ordinates are N56.59925 W2.53423 (do not enter the post code or that will take you down to the village). Arbroath is 20 miles north of Dundee on the A92. Arbroath is on the east coast mainline but once here you really need a car.

Wood Cottage is the perfect holiday home, ideal for a couple looking for a bit of peace and quiet or for a small family. Please note that smoking is prohibited in the cottage itself. There are three bedrooms and in theory the cottage can accommodate five people but four is probably the ideal maximum.

One of the main attractions is undoubtedly Lunan Bay, a beautiful curve of sandy beach famous for its dunes. You can swim here but be warned-the water is very cold. The south end of the bay, starting from the delightful Corbie Knowe, a cluster of quirky solar-powered holiday huts and caravans, offers the walker a stunning stretch of often deserted coastline to explore. The walk to Corbie Knowe from Wood Cottage is along a dramatic and in places barely visible cliff top path (so be careful!) with fantastic sea views and, if you're lucky, a glimpse of bottle-nosed dolphins. You may also see gannets, guillemots and other sea birds. The walk, returning via Ethie Castle, takes about 3 hours.

Glamis Castle, ancestral home of the earls of Strathmore, is 22 miles away. The magnificent grounds host a number of internationally acclaimed events.

So in summary Wood Cottage is a lovely, homely cottage in a pleasant location close to a wonderful stretch of coastline offering much of interest to walkers, naturalists and bird watchers.

Arbroath (home of the famous smokie but which is actually said to have originated in Auchmithie) is a fine wee town of 22,000 folks with a fascinating history and claims to be the birthplace of Scotland. It has an interesting harbour and there are a few nice cafes and pubs there and in the town itself.
