House in own garden, sleeps 5/7, mountain views, dogs welcome, village 5 mins wa

Updated: 05-Dec-2016
Village house in large garden, Pyrenees Orientales, Languedoc Roussillon, France - Peaceful Location, Privacy, Mediterranean Beaches and Spain a short drive away

Our villa is named after the Golden Oriole, a beautiful bright yellow and black migratory bird which spends summer in southern France: its flute-like song can be heard from our roof terrace. The house is quiet and private, located in a 1200 square metre garden. There are 3 bedrooms in the house ,sleeping 5, and for an extra charge there also is a summerhouse with two single beds in the garden; the perfect retreat for teenagers (or their parents)! There are wonderful mountain views from the large kitchen/diner, the main bedroom and the roof terrace. In summer you can eat outside, basking in the sun on the terrace or one of the two courtyards, or in the shade of the catalpa tree. Air conditioning keeps the house cool on warm summer nights and there is a wood burning stove and central heating for the cooler months. Free parking nearby. Les Loriots is less than five minutes walk from the centre of the 13th century village of Maureillas. A small supermarket is open 7 days a week, and there are two bakeries, a butcher, post office and pharmacy. Bus services leave for Ceret, Argeles and Perpignan from the bus stop outside the supermarket.

About the Owner

We bought this house in 2004; we wanted a house with a big garden , in a traditional French village, with shops, close to the mountains and to the sea. We were also in search of sunshine - and this area clocks up 300 days of sun a year! This is a friendly village, the people and language a mix of French and Catalan, and life here is lived at a slower, more traditional pace. Spain is a 10 minute drive away, through a mountain pass first taken by Hannibal in the 2nd century BC; you can take the A9 motorway if you prefer, or the brand new high speed train linking Perpignan to Barcelona . We work in the UK, so are not here as often as we would like; but we hope you will enjoy the house, the garden, the roof terrace with its mountain views and especially the sunshine as much as we do.

"We’ve stayed in many holiday properties over the years and this one was right up there with the best. It’s immediately clear the time and effort you have put into the house, the lovely brickwork and tiling outside and the high spec throughout the property.Lots of fun and adventures to be had in and around Maureillias, more than enough to keep the kids occupied and we didn’t even get a chance to venture over the border into Spain. It was very hot when we were there and the swimming pool at Le Boulou was very clean and refreshing …. every day has included new adventures, experiences and great fun. ..Aqualand, Collioure, Lac St Jean, Le Racou and the village festival night have all been major highlights but overall it's been fantastic to have such a lovely house to return to each night. …. even two weeks here wouldn't have been enough time to do everything we wanted."

John and Maggie P. + Molly the springer spaniel (from Yorkshire) May 2013 "The house has proved extremely comfortable and has everything we need …..Molly has really enjoyed having such a large garden to charge around in and we have enjoyed the peace and quiet here, but appreciated the proximity to the village, as well as Ceret and Le Boulou. (We) particularly enjoyed the ride on the Train Jaune and the delights of Collioure. Ceret….is a really pleasant little town, great for sitting and people watching with a glass of wine, have also been to the market a couple of times and enjoyed it very much. On the Spanish side of the border we enjoyed Figueres and Cadaques ... … We just wanted to say how much we have enjoyed and appreciated the place."

Ian D.and family (from Scotland), May 2014

"Here we are in your lovely home , basking in glorious sunshine, enjoying apple tea on the terrace …. The house and garden look terrific and the setting is wonderful. My grandson is singing happily at the table."

The best French holiday home we've ever stayed in!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I, and now our two teenage boys, have been holidaying in France for many years; my wife being half French and having family there.

We stayed in Les Loriots for only a week but could have stayed forever. As I said to my wife on the last day: 'Normally, at the end of a holiday, I'm happy to be heading home to comfortable furniture and a homely environment; not so this time!'

Access to this house is idiosyncratic but shouldn't put anybody off. It's literally a few hundred yards from either end of the track and provides the most wonderful privacy and peace. The house itself is beautifully maintained to a very high standard and was spotlessly clean when we arrived. It's large and comfortable. Furnished in a manner with which you can live and equipped with everything you might need. As another reviewer has said, the large garden is arranged so that you can find sun or shade, whatever your preference, at any time of the day.

I could go on and on but won't. Suffice it to say, we've never considered going on holiday to the same place twice but we're already wondering when we can return to Les Loriots.

Les Loriots holiday home review

  • 5 of 5

After walking down a windy, grassy path, occasionally passing the odd goat or sheep, you come to a wall and blue garden door behind which is a charming, colourful, welcoming and well-appointed house, with distant views of the mountains. The fixtures and fittings were of a high quality and the furniture comfortable. We instantly felt relaxed and comfortable - it felt like home, rather than a bland holiday house, and the detailed and accurate information sent to us by the owners, Kathy and Nick, was very helpful.

As an added bonus there are several places in the private garden and nearer to the house to sit to find either sun or shade.

The location was great. A couple of minutes walk and you're in the village, a few minutes drive and there are supermarkets for the essentials and the beaches, mountains, towns and lots of places of interest are nearby.

We've stayed in many holiday homes over the years and Les Loriets was one of the more special ones because Kathy and Nick showed such a lot of care and thought not only for their house but also for us as guests, doing all they could to make it great for us.

Les Loriots

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful two weeks in Les Loriots, It lived up to and in many ways exceeded our expectations.

The kitchen had everything you could possibly need, even for an enthusiastic cook like my husband. It is big, light, bright and very comfortable, with doors leading straight out onto a very private patio. The bedrooms were comfortable and the addition of air conditioning made them wonderfully cool when needed.

The house is set in its own private garden with lots of space for the kids to run around ( or in our case teenagers to get away from the old folk!) The view of the mountain Le Canigou, from the roof terrace is spectacular, and a very special place to sit to watch the sun set.

The village itself has everything you need, a small but well stocked shop, a friendly boulangerie, and a number of very good café/restaurants that are well worth a visit. Kathy and Nick left us a very detailed and useful list of interesting places to visit and a number of local maps. All in all we had the most wonderful time, which was perfect as it was our honeymoon!!

Only 10 minutes easy drive away is the beautiful town of Ceret. It has vibrant street cafes, restaurants, a Museum of Modern Art, and a Saturday morning market that is the best one we have been to in France, it spreads right through the town. During the cherry festival there are street bands playing Catalan music. This is a wonderful area, and Les Loriots is in a perfectly positioned to explore.

The village is a traditional Pyrennean village of about 3000 inhabitants, mostly French and Catalan, plus a sprinkling of people from around the world. It has good transport links, but even in the hieght of summer is never overcrowded. Our house, is less than five minutes walk from the centre of the village. The house is named after the Golden Oriole, a beautiful bright yellow and black migratory bird which spends its summer in southern France;its wonderful flute-like song can be heard in our large (1200 square metre) garden from May to September. The house and garden are quiet and private with wonderful views of the celebrated Canigou mountain from the large kitchen and master bedroom, and most spectacularly from the rooftop terrace.
