About Em Sawday

We live in Bristol and have two grown-up sons. We had many years of holidays in Cornwall when they were growing up and we can hardly believe our luck in having this house now to continue our relationship with Cornwall's cliffs and beaches.

Em Sawday purchased this house in 2010

Why Em Sawday chose Redruth

I inherited the house from my uncle and took 2 years to restore and renovate it.

Cornwall is very special to me for its wild cliff walks, sense of ancient history and mythology and of course its wonderful beaches.I spent many childhood years here with my grandparents and uncle.

We love being here because the house itself is so easy and comfortable to be in. We can look at the weather on the north coast and head to the south if it looks better there!

We're only 12 minutes away from our favourite beach at Porthtowan and even in winter it's wonderful to walk there on the beach or cliffs.

In summer we can relax in the garden away from the crowds on beaches.

It's so very near to Falmouth, Truro and St Ives for distractions like shopping, dining out and visiting Art galleries.

What makes this house unique

The shape of the house means we can be there alone or with a group of friends. The small sitting room is cosy for 2 or 4, the bigger one is great for a party of 8 to be in together.

My special pride is the kitchen. I like to cook with others around me. Here we've had 3 people cooking together and others enjoying a drink and chat and it feels spacious enough to do that without falling over each other. It's light and spacious inside the house and now the garden is maturing I just love spending time in it gardening and picking flowers at almost any time of year. Spring for daffodils, primroses and crocuses and summer for too many to name.

The kitchen leads out of the BOOTROOM which we've designed to allow damp coats, wetsuits, boots etc to be shed before you come into the house. You can shower here too if you're covered in sand or mud!

Redruth is on the mainline railway, the station's only a 15 minute walk form the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

1]The house is just lovely to be in. Children enjoyed the train ride to St Ives. [Victoria]

2]Lovely comfortable beds, great to be able to eat together as a family in the huge kitchen. [Jane and family]

3]For three couples this was just the perfect place. Great place for getting to other destinations.

Notes on accommodation: Our handsome Edwardian holiday house is a welcoming spacious place for families or couples. Centrally heated. 2 woodburners, lots of space for drying clothes and wetsuits inside and out in the garden. The kitchen/dining room has space for all the family to gather and eat together: there's a high chair too. Very suitable for children There are some board games, children's books and puzzles for wet days! Gas and electricity are included. TV/ DVD player. Outside: Enjoy our large, safe, lawned gardens at the front and back of the house. Lots of space for children to let off any steam they might still have after a day out! Barbecue. Patio with table and chairs for outdoor eating outside the kitchen door. Shelter under the sun umbrella or bask in the early morning sun outside the back door at breakfast time. Borrow a rug to lounge on the lawn or lie back in an old fashioned deck chair Parts of he garden are newly planted but there are also mature shrubs and trees; it already looks as though everything's been growing for ages! We have planted delicate birch trees and shrubs now well bedded in. The old oak tree still stands, a tribute to my uncle's planting 60 years ago. Enjoy daffodils and crocuses in Spring or our abundance of summer flowers in July and August. A second patio outside the back door catches early morning sun and might be the spot to escape to while children eat breakfast elsewhere! Parking for 3 cars in drive. Utility Room: Washing machine, pulley for drying, iron and ironing board. Belfast sink. A warm drying-room with boiler for water and central heating. Controls for the heating are in here. Vacuum cleaner, brushes etc in cupboard under stairs. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The house is cleaned after every stay. Fabulous house for 2 families wanting to share but not be in top of each other.

  • 5 of 5

Great central location for Cornwall, so many great beaches and towns near by.

House was perfectly equipped and had so much space for 2 families. Communication with Em and Claire was efficient and helpful. Loved the cream tea on arrival and appreciated the practical touches like the wetsuit drying racks, washing up liquid, and hand soap in the bathrooms - making our stay so much more like home. We made good use of the BBQ despite the weather. As frequent users of owners direct I would highly recommend this property.

Fantastic family weekend away

  • 5 of 5

This house is beautiful a very home from home, very clean with every amenities to make your stay super. Nothing is too much trouble for Em, she goes out her way to make your stay the best it can. We stayed for the weekend and found the house so comfortable and tranquil. The gardens are lovely which allows you to enjoy a lovely meal on the patio. There is plenty of rooms for you to escape if need be. The train is not far where you can go to many lovely places. A short drive into Perranporth was amazing. I would definitely recommend this place and will book again

Nothing but "perfection" !!!

  • 5 of 5

We were 1 of 2 families staying in this fantastic home. From the very moment we walked through the door, to the morning we left, absolutely everything was "fabulous". The house is brilliantly equipped for everything you could ask for. The space is wonderful, especially the kitchen area, it's bigger than the photos can show. In fact, all the photos don't give this fantastic home enough justice, it was above and beyond what we were hoping for.

The trip to St Ives on the train is a must. Incredibly easy, and the most scenic way to travel into St Ives!!! For those of you with children the new "jump 4" for a dull day was great.

Lastly but certainly not least, Em and Alistair were incredibly helpful, kind and easy to speak to and contact.

It felt an honour to stay in such a lovely home, and we are very great full they have made the decision to rent this 2nd home out. We will definateley be returning one day. Many thanks to you both, you truly deserve only positive feedback.

Owner's Response: Dear Kirsty, What a lovely review! I'm so very glad you all found the spaciousness of the house so good for two families. Everyone loves the kitchen space! I guess we've made it a place we want to be in ourselves and are always pleased to know it suits our guests too. The St Ives train trip is a winner is't it? We did it last year with our twin grandchildren. No parking hassle and a truly scenic route! Come again. WE'd love to have you. Em

Great space for all

  • 5 of 5

Two families had a great time at Uncle Johns, it was perfect for all our needs - a fab space in the huge kitchen which we didn't really need to leave, but for quiter moments the 2 lounges catered brilliantly for young and old! Porthtowan a great find for surf and St Ives on the train definitely recommended. Thank you very much for a great stay.

Perfect choice!

  • 5 of 5

Four generations of our family stayed at Uncle John's House in Redruth in June 2016 and it proved to be the perfect choice. A beautiful family home with a lovely garden that is very well-equipped - with loads of books and games for children. It feels like a home, not a holiday rental. The whole house has been recently renovated and the kitchen-dining area provides a wonderful space to eat, drink, socialise and play games. Highly recommended - we will be coming back! Peter, Devon
