About the property

Secluded Luxurious Apartment in 3 hectares of Gardens With Superb Views Of Ceret And The Mediterranean

Renovated in 2011 to the highest standards with respect for the original character of this ancient building and the environment. The old stone walls are decorated with the works of local artists, the water heated by solar panels. The wine-making area is now an impressive dining hall, with games room above. There are 3 ha of woodland, orchards and formal gardens, surrounded by the wooded slopes of the Alberes. The swimming pool has total privacy with gardens and superb views of the Roussillon plain and Mediterranean, Canigou and the distant Cevennes. We promote wildlife and often see eagles, wild boar and deer, also having our own sheep and chickens. We are only 3 km from Ceret (the sunniest village in France) with its cafes and lively festivals, and a 30 minute drive from beautiful beaches & marine conservation areas. The Costa Brava is only a short drive away. We offer the opportunity to stay in a uniquely private setting, in a beautifully restored building, with total tranquility & privacy, to experience life in an authentic Catalan mas decorated with original art & antiques, and to taste a flavour of easy-going French life in this beautiful part of France.

About Marian Thornley

We bought our property, Mas Pallagourdi, as a semi-derelict ancient farmhouse, set within wonderful scenery, in 2007. We have spent five years working hard to renovate the house and gardens, trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible, as well as preserving the unique character of this ancient house. We care very much about the environment, so we installed solar panels and water collection systems, planted trees and flowers to attract birds and butterflies. We have a few Cameroon sheep, and chickens provide us with eggs. We hope we have created a comfortable home from home and that our visitors enjoy our home as much as we do.

Marian Thornley purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Marian Thornley chose Céret

We fell in love with Ceret the minute we cycled into it, in the summer of 2007. We were looking for unspoilt nature, wide open spaces, a warm healthy climate, access to walking trails, mountains and sea, and we found all that in this wonderful, unspoilt area. We also found a lively culture with an emphasis on art, music, food, and joie de vivre.

What makes this apartment unique

We offer a unique combination of privacy and seclusion while being only a five minute drive from the charming, warm-hearted town of Ceret. Our views are second to none, and we pride ourselves on the comfort and high standard of our accommodation. We aim to provide a personal service for our guests, with extra cleaning and mountain bikes all available on request. We try to be unobtrusive but we are here to help our guests enjoy the property and the area and above all, to have a wonderful holiday

Guestbook comments from the owner

We've had a fantastic week in your lovely house, big thanks to both of you! We especially enjoyed the cherry festival in Ceret. We've really loved the views, the garden and the birds, hope to be back one day!

Wonderful house, wonderful setting....we enjoyed our times outside and in, very well equipped too. We travelled to explore the wider region and attended the local music festival & found good musical entertainment. Thanks Bill and Marian, our friendly and helpful hosts.

The perfect place to chill, recharge the batteries and enjoy beautiful surroundings, we hope to come back!

Absolutely magical stay!!

  • 5 of 5

What a delightful and beautiful place! The apartment is huge, and all the rooms have been thoughtfully modernized and are immaculate. Gorgeous views everywhere you look. Marian and Bill are such sweet, fun, helpful people but not at all intrusive. The same can be said for the adorable built-in pets: Frank the cat and Gyp the dog. Wonderful and affectionate if you want to have them around, but disappear if you you would rather not interact with them. It's a quick drive to town, but feels so quiet and isolated on such beautiful grounds. We would stay there again in a heart beat (in fact, stay there forever in a heart beat)! There was just the two of us, but place would be perfect for two couples with room for children as well. If you are looking for a vacation rental anywhere in the area, this place really can't be beat.

Thank you, Marian and Bill, for making this beautiful space available and making our stay so enjoyable!!

Accommodation, grounds and caring hosts brilliant

  • 5 of 5

We were lucky to find this exceptional property. We usually ignore "apartments". This is half of a large farmhouse set in extensive grounds. Lovingly restored ,spacious with high quality fittings. The hosts gave valuable advice (when asked) and their experience of the area added to our holiday. The scenery was lovely enough to provide enjoyment for days.

It is up on the hills. One needs transport.

Incredible Tranquility 30 Minutes Drive From The Beach

  • 5 of 5

Bill & Marian have created the perfect hillside getaway incredibly peaceful yet only 10 minutes drive from Céret and 30 Minutes from the hustle and bustle of Coulliere. The apartment is every bit as good as the photos show but.... It is incredibly spacious. Everything you need is here we cooked in the well equipped kitchen every day. The house was well stocked with books and dvd's and the TV worked fine for those quiet nights in. Furnishings and decoration were all well thought out. All in all we couldn't fault anything about our stay and it was as near to perfection as can be. Thank You Bill & Marion.

Absolutely fabulous! A glorious place to spend some time.

Our mid - September break at Mas Pallagourdi was wonderful. We loved the house- quiet and secluded, just what we were looking for. It was spacious, comfortable and really well equipped. The decor, art works, books and beautiful things all helped to make our stay memorable. Breakfast in the garden, reading on the swinging seat, relaxing by the pool, amazing views- we could wish for nothing better.

Thank you Marion and Bill. We hope to return.

Stunning views, and beautiful property!!

  • 5 of 5

Quite possibly the most beautiful holiday property we've ever had (and we are well traveled!). Stunning views, great pool, fantastic weather, local town with everything we needed in terms of shops and restaurants but quiet enough to feel really friendly. this holiday has just re-enforced our plan to live here when we retire (well the area not the house!|). Marian & Bill couldn't have been nicer people and couldn't have done more to make us feel at home from the word go. Honestly can't recommend this property enough. Can we come back please?!!

Perfect in every way.

  • 5 of 5

We lived near Ceret from September to June the previous year and wanted to find somewhere special we could stay for short return trips. After much research we chose Mas Pallagourdi, which delivered all we could have hoped for.

The 2 bedroomed apartment was so much more than we expected - huge living areas upstairs with stunning views across the valley to the Mediterranean and up to Canigou one way and over the gardens, fields and woods the other way. Downstairs was a beautifully equipped kitchen and large en-suite bedroom (with large, very comfortable bed), with French windows opening onto the beautiful, tranquil garden.

Everywhere was wonderfully clean and smelt fragrant and cared for. Marian and Bill were very discreet, ensuring that we always had privacy, but kind and helpful and a real pleasure to get to know - thank you for the Sunday morning treats! Customer service was second to none.

We would highly recommend Mas Pallagourdi to anyone who wants to fall in love with the area as we have. Staying in April, we had a bit of everything weather wise, but that's how we like it. Even in April or November there will be beach weather in this part of the world!

We are missing the markets and wonderful restaurants in the area, but look forward to returning to Marian and Bill's at some point next year to see how the lambs have grown and spend time with Gyp, who must be the most gorgeous dog in the world!
