Large Medieval Longere part open plan with Mezzanines. Set amidst the countryside in an idyllic unspoilt area of Normandy, with a village 1 mile away which has a mini supermarket ,Bakers ,Bar ,restaurant ,garage and Old Church.,and two towns either about 5 miles distant. Perfect for touring Normandies many tourist attractions or just sitting by the stream in the garden among the Hazels and Apple Trees.The House has a Large Farmhouse kitchen with Dining ,a Very Large Open Plan area Living room ,two Mezzanines above which are two bedrooms linked by a Bridge over the Open plan area.There are two further Bedrooms at the other end of the House ,and two Bathrooms,one on the ground floor and one on the first floor.The house retains its ancient Character but is modern and comfortable too .There is internet wifi Internet access.This is a great Base for exploring Normandy.

A quiet get away in rural Normandy

This house worked very well for us on our summer break. Over the years we've visited Normandy, Brittany and further down South to the Vendee and thought this year, we'd re-visit Normandy.

Location wise, this is definitely rural Normandy, down a paved road, past a farm, almost to the end. There are a couple of houses further down at the very end of the road, so you have quiet and isolation, if that is what you are after, but with the knowledge that working rural life continues around you. Essentially, you are located in farming land, but the farmhouse and working agricultural buildings well away and out sight from the house.

As described, the nearby village has a friendly local shop, good for whatever you have run out of and bakery, though you'll want to be more substantively shopping in the towns a few kilometres away. Location wise, my only regret was not taking advantage more of the nearby cycle route, which is one of the Voies vertes [Green Routes] on a disused railway line. We took a walk along a stretch of it - looked like perfect family cycling terrain and I yearned for my bike, chained up at home.

The house is, as described, a former barn, now renovated to a spacious property. The four of us were more than comfortable in it; six or eight would have still worked well - there are plenty of bed options.

It has kept the character of the barn, especially from the outside, but also retaining some of the beams and structure of the former interior space, while being thoroughly re-fitted and modernised.

Anything to watch out for?

The staircases to access the different levels do need care going up and down and some of the new wood has yet to "wear in." It is lovely, though, to have that wood and space. We enjoyed being able to move in from the garden as evening fell, to sit and read in the mezzanine while the kids sprawled in living room below.

We are spoilt at home by a dishwasher - here we had to reacquaint ourselves with the sink. Not a problem, but it would be a shame if a house of this size, quality and scope was ruled out of your choice if you felt you could not live without one.

The beaches, if you want them (we did get out to them) could be hit in 40 minutes, but the better ones are a bit further e.g. just below and above Granville. Plenty of both busy parts, and numerous small roads that are worth exploring down to reach an isolated part of the long beaches, but well over an hour.

Overall, I'd recommend this highly.

I found this amazing ancient house by chance whilst on a travelling holiday through Normandy and although it needed total renovation i could see its potential and so I have spent the the last twelve years working in my holidays and then more time to renovate it .Its set in a beautiful unspoilt area yet its only one or two hours to the local ports and airports,and three hours on the train to Paris.I have to travel a lot for work and love these places for the pure escapism from the rat race.

Coast/Beach:

40 Minutes drive to nearest sandy Beach at Genets .

Travel:

Dinard Airport is about one and half hours away.Rennes Airport is one and half hours drive.

Caen Airport one and a half hours drive .Caen Port is one and half hours away.St Malo port is one and a half hours drive away,Cherbourg port is 2 hours drive away.

Distances:

1 mile to nearest village mini market, bar tabac, restaurant, garage, bakers , hairdressers. The towns of Mortain and St hilaire du Harcouet are about 5 miles away. With larger array of shops all facilities.Avranches is 25 minutes drive away.

Perfect base for cycles and walks exploring along the disused railway paths which network throughout the local areas or the quiet country lanes. The sea and sandy beaches are only 45 minutes away and Le Mont St Michel a drive away. There are cycle routes up the coast. There is go Karting in Mortain nearby. Day passes for Fishing for trout a 35 minute drive and also a river a short walk away.The 1 mile distant village has a Restaurant,Bar ,garage ,mini Market, Hairdressers, Bakers and a Brocante. There are many other country pursuits and Calvados and cider farms close by. Within driving distance of the D Day landing Beaches, and museums. There was an major counter attack in Mortain during the war and many War cemeteries around the region. Many local Castles and Gardens to visit.Bon Voyage!
