Le Monastere is sited in the beautiful medieval village of Vouvant, within easy reach of airports (La Rochelle, Poitiers and Nantes) The high spec, ground floor apartment is set in beautiful gardens, and has magnificent views. Le Monastere is a gated development with its own extensive private grounds, river frontage and private swimming pool. The village offers friendly bars, restaurants, boulangerie and mini market. It is also a renowned centre of arts and is home to several ateliers and cultural events. Nearby are typical French market towns with most amenities including restaurants, open-air markets and supermarkets. The apartment is close to spectacular forests, and lakes, miles of walking/cycling trails and an hour or so from the fashionable resort of Les Sables d’OLonne and beautiful La Rochelle. The region is a dream come true for those who love quaint villages, chic resorts and cities /towns with medieval architecture and heritage. 400 miles (6hrs) drive from Calais.

We are both busy business people who fell in love with France some years ago. After many touring holidays and a couple of disappointing holiday lets we decided to buy in Vouvant,having stayed there with friends. We immediately knew we had made a great choice. It is just lovely.We can truly relax..we have found great places to eat and beautiful and interesting places to see. There are always friendly people in the local bars and bistros..French and English. We walk, cycle around or drive to visit the nearby cities,like Nantes, Poitiers, La Rochelle.Of course we like the chic shops and sights ,but they are just packed with historical interest too. Some days we fancy the beach and the coast is great with both quiet and buzzing resorts depending on your mood. It is simply perfect for us.

We had a lovely week exploring the area around Vouvant. The apartment had every comfort and all equipment you could wish for. It was very quiet, beautifully clean and well maintained. Would highly recommend it.

Beautiful, tasteful, luxurious

We have been wondering whether to leave a review because it lessens our chance to book this property again. When we arrived at the Apartment, we were so taken aback at the wonderful environment we had entered. A gated, private accommodation, originally a Monastery. Tastefully developed into apartments. The grounds have the most beautiful gardens, tenderly and lovingly looked after. This apartment was clean and was equipped with everything you could wish for. There were flowers on our arrival and helpful information was abundant. Nick was more than helpful in helping up gain access and all arrangements were quick and informative. We felt like we were at hotel. The apartment is so tastefully decorated and everything needed. Bed was so comfortable and the bathroom was clean with plenty of hot water. There is a laundry on site and also a library and DVD library for residents to use. The Pool was perfect, the cleanest pool I have ever been in. The village of Vouvant is beautfiul with a wonderful Medieval Church that plenty of people come to visit. It has several restaurants and Bars and lovely walks down to the river. All in all, we loved this place, everything about it and can only thank Nick and Cheryl for letting us stay here. We hope to return.

Perfect property in a perfect location.

Lovely apartment, a home from home. Situated in a converted monastery with a nice sized pool & beautifully maintained ground. Friendly village with 3 good restaurants/cafes. Just over an hour's drive to the nearest beach, La Rochelle & Les Sables D'Olonne. A trip on the canal at Coulon is a must. Would definitely stay there again.

Total relaxation

Great property - perfect for the two of us - might have been a bit cramped if we'd needed to use sofa bed. Vouvant is lively little village (unlike most French villages) with a wonderful old church (even with it's erratic bells!). Good quality cafes / bars. Beautiful location and La Monesterie is located in delightful grounds - even saw red squirrels. Convenient for getting to La Rochelle and up to Loire valley for days out, and don't forget the Marais wetlands - definitely worth a visit (especially to the coastal areas). If you just want to completely relax and forget about what is happening elsewhere in the world, then this is the place for you.

Holiday heaven

A perfectly presented and managed property in a picture postcard village, the village has at least a couple of good restaurants which are excellent value, and a small general store with a couple more shops, a market visits one morning a week, the property is ideally situated, plenty of walks, and if you want to venture further, the coast is about an hour away, it really does tick all the boxes. The grounds are really lovely and well cared for, there are plenty of car parking spaces, and the swimming pool and the area around the pool is spotless with plenty of sun loungers. It is a really relaxing holiday and highly recommended.

Beautiful Apartment

Just returned from a week here and it is even prettier than the pictures show. The apartment is beautifully presented and well equipped to a high standard. It is also ideally positioned with the village and all it has to offer on the doorstep just a short stroll away. Convenient for forest and riverside walks and not too long a drive from the beach either. Lots of information available in the apartment re things to do and places to go which was very helpful. Ate out in the Village restaurant and the village bar both of which were lovely. We were too early in the season for the pool but it was being prepared for use and looks like it would be great with amazing views. The monastere and the village were immaculately kept. The owners Nick and Cheryl were very warm, friendly and helpful and went out of their way to accommodate our last minute search for accommodation. Would definitely recommend.

Love the area and village. Rear of property overlooks village and front looks out over hilly countryside. Peaceful and very pleasant, without feeling remote from activity. It is good to have the options of different airports. Also we like to drive so the distance from England is very do-able!

Lots of activities available depending on time of year. Painting classes/photography/cycling/canoeing

Coast/Beach:

Choice of quaint/quiet beaches or chic resorts (e.g. Sables d' Olonne). The region is renowned for some of the best beaches in France. Accessible from La Rochelle (60 mins drive) is the famous Ille de Re, a beautiful island reached by a bridge and dotted with quaint villages and fabulous beaches.

Travel:

Airports at Poitiers, La Rochelle and Nantes all about one hours drive. Car rental available at each (Hertz allow pick-up/drop off at different airports)

Ferry port at St Malo about 3. 5 hours and Calais approx. 6. 5 hours. Car recommended.

Distances:

Apartment in village with bars, restaurants, mini market. Short drive to towns of Chataigneraie andFontenay Le Comte for larger shops, supermarkets and banks.

A little over 45 minutes to World famous Puy de Fou leisure/theme park.

Cities of Niort, Nantes, Poitiers, Angers are all easily accessible by car.

Futuroscope at Poitiers is a popular attraction.

Further Details:

Vouvant really is very special. A village, but actually a walled medieval city with a beautiful river flowing below spectacular ramparts. Home to many art studios and offering cycle hire,horse riding,canoeing and tennis. In the centre is the fabulous 11th century church and the village is host to a variety of festivals and events, including open air opera.

A local tourist office will give all details.

Within 10 minutes drive or short cycle ride is the spectacular Mervent forest with miles of trails and lakes.

Marais Poitevin is famous for marsh and miles of canals available for leisure boat hire.

For those interested in Anglo/ French history there are numerous sites and reminders of Henry iv and Eleanor of Aquitaine.
