About Eddie & Jenny Matthews

Meet your hosts - Eddie and Jenny

Eddie Matthews, a former lecturer in Management, plays jazz on bass guitar and various horns. He is married to jazz pianist and singer Jenny Miller whose zest and energetic multi-tasking keep Foelortho farmhouse afloat.

As time allows, Eddie also writes comedy sketches and builds follies while Jenny's green fingers work magic in the garden.

Eddie & Jenny Matthews purchased this farmhouse in 1965

Why Eddie & Jenny Matthews chose Powys and Brecon Beacons

Discovered in 1967 with the help of two friendly rock stars the farmhouse had been empty for four years and was almost derelict, with no electricity, a roof full of holes, one cold tap and a somewhat off-putting lav far away up the garden path.

Now, as a result of forty-two years of student and child slave labour, the scraping together of every penny from a million lectures and gigs and the focussing of family enthusiasm bordering on the manic, we’ve finally made it ‘with a little help from our friends’ and had a load of laughs on the way.

In the early years, most of the rooms being big and airy, we often froze in our beds but since the advent of full central heating in 1986, the whole house can be as cosy as you want.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Inside

Amongst mediaeval oak galleries, historic cruck beams & secret places behind bookcases, Wi-Fi, DVD, Jacuzzi, en-suite bedrooms & well equipped modern kitchen.

Outside

Amazing mountain bike / MTB / walk / walking in the quiet mountains with buzzards high above, or pop down to the friendly village shop & pub. Stunning fifteen mile panorama from the doorstep.

Like no other place on earth!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Dear Ed and Jenny,

A truly amazing place you have here - we have all had a fantastic time. The kids have loved the house and the follies. We’ve made the most of al fresco dining on the many terraces. Have enjoyed lots of runs, walks, swims, bike rides and games of dodge ball (+40 - 40). We had the best ever egg hunt around the folllies and have all vowed to return v. soon.

Thanks Ed and Jenny, we’ve had a wonderful weekend. Dad and son (the twins) had a fantastic birthday, and this was the perfect place to come to. Everyone will remember this for years to come.

Boules at midnight with a starry sky was fantastic!! Wonderful place for the whole family to get together and a very memorable happy 60th birthday celebration for Stan and Phil.

Thank you for our second fabulous visit this year. It was lovely to see the garden in all its glory and use the BBQ.

Dear Ed and Jenny,

Thank you for your lovely welcome. I have so enjoyed staying

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: At the head of a hideaway valley near the River Tanat, in that charming but little known stretch of mid-Wales lying between historic Offa’s Dyke and the rugged magnificence of Snowdonia, stands the ancient farmhouse of Foel Ortho set in stunningly beautiful countryside. On the thousand foot contour, nestling into the Powys hillside, this historic home - one of the few remaining ‘cruck buildings’ in Wales - affords spectacular views stretching twelve miles across to the Berwyn mountains while behind the house the pre-Roman track Llwybr Heulen (Helen’s Way) winds up to Clawdd Mawr, the once-fortified Celtic earthwork. The Spa Suite - (Hot Tub & Sauna) afford glorious views down the valley. Hidden away in the hillside garden you may discover the Follies - the much filmed, photographed and adored fantasy world of colour, shape and sound, created over the last forty years by jazz trumpeter Eddie Matthews - surely the ultimate escape from all known stresses and strains. Outside: The garden has been used as a film set several times. It has a wonderful BBQ and a covered bar with a fridge for beer and wine and a large table! At the front of the house there is a conservatory and a slate patio with table and chairs and one of the best views in Wales down the Tanat valley - 12 miles to the Berwyn mountain range. Utility Room: Farmhouse: Laundry This utility room where butter was made up to the 50’s now houses the washing machine, tumble-drier, Barnes airer for line drying, 6ft long clothes rail for coats etc. iron & ironing board & Belfast sink (excellent for bathing babies). Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: In the Farmhouse: Before you arrive all linen is washed. Other: Garden/Breakfast Room This has stunning views down the valley, & is good for relaxing over coffee, watching the buzzards as they quarter the valley, or for children to do drawing etc. Boot Room is for wellies & wet gear, houses Frigidaire & deep freeze.

Lovely place, but...

  • 3 of 5

The property is amazing and magical and the surroundings are beautiful. The only real downside was that the owners wandered into the house that many times over the weekend to have a little chat (none of these chats lasted less than 20mins at a time) that many times, we lost count. Once one of our party was actually in the middle of getting changed to go out in the evening and was caught in a towel, and another was near to midnight and we had to stop a hen party game in the middle while Ed sat in the middle of us oblivious and ate cake!! Even a strong hint or two didn't sink in and he was there for another half hour or so! During the day one day, I think he thought we were all out and I found him giving two people a tour of the house as I went inside to get something!

That's not to say the owners aren't nice people but it put us all in a very awkward position, we didn't want to be horrible and ask them to leave outright, you'd think they would be aware of what was intrusive.

Great house but I don't think I'd return, the owners crossed over the boundaries of what was professional, several times, seemly unaware that we werent there to see them, and while they were lovely people we didn't go there to talk to them every few hours when they felt like popping in!

Owner's Response: Response from Ed Matthews My wife and I were surprised and saddened to receive your review. In brief: we would point out that, in our rambling 15c farmhouse, we do, from time to time, when it’s necessary, have to knock on our guests’ door, to check that the log fire is burning well, the Aga stove is not too hot, the Central Heating is sufficient, no fuse has blown, the hot-tub is not overflowing etc etc. During such occasional janitorial visits I must confess that I’ve often succumbed to offers of chocolate cake and the occasional beer, but we have always more than reciprocated with food and drink on the many occasions when our visitors share an evening of music and jollity with us in our adjoining apartment.. We do apologise to our complainant if our friendliness and hospitality appeared too relaxed and informal and we do hope that she, like many others, will visit us again.

A unique stay in cosy & sublime of surroundings

  • 5 of 5

If you like your holidays to be in modern, dull, pre-fab hotel rooms without character or interest & your hosts to be invisible then this place is sadly not for you. If however you want to indulge and have a true adventure then you simply must book in fast!

We had the pleasure of staying in the farmhouse over the New Year's bank holiday weekend. Two families including a 9 month old baby takes some serious housing and Foel Ortho provided it beautifully.

From the very first communication to the warmest of welcomes I thoroughly enjoyed my conversations with both Eddie & Jenny Matthews. The accommodation itself is like an exciting rabbit warren with more rooms than you can count including secret bedrooms behind bookcases, secret passages and even a spa.

The house is well stocked with everything that you need for a great holiday, right down to toys and games for babies and children. There's even a piano in the living room instead of a TV to encourage evenings when families & friends talk together and have fun rather than staying glued to a TV or mobile screen.

We honestly had one of the most memorable holidays that I've been on and will most certainly be back many many times to come.

Eddie & Jenny thank you so much.

A Magical Wonderland!

  • 5 of 5

If you dream of sleeping amongst the little folk, have a love of all things quirky or just want to spend some quality time in the Welsh countryside I would highly recommend Foel Ortho Farmhouse, Bunkhouse and Treehouse! Ed and Jenny are wonderful hosts, ensure you have everything you need for your stay and there is even a spa for guests to use with a hot tub with amazing views and a sauna. The accommodations are self-catering and facilities are more than adequate. I slept in the Treehouse for 2 nights, which is a romantic hideaway by The Follies (the mystical garden hand grown by Ed). I can't wait to go back and stay there all over again, thank you!
