17th Century Village House Beautiful Views

Updated: 17-Jul-2016
House in Jumilhac le Grand, Dordogne, Aquitaine, France - 3 Minute Walk To Chateau And Local Amenities

Nestled a few hundred metres below the chateau of Jumilhac le Grand is this extremely comfortable, spacious village house. Jumilhac is a wonderful holiday destination for those who want to unwind and relax in a French village steeped in history and charm and have easy access to the bakery, local shops, public open air heated pool (July and August). It is also a great base for discovering the delights of the Limousin and the Dordogne. The owners have taken great care to keep the property's character features, providing the house with a French country cottage atmosphere. The property is on a quiet winding road leading from the chateau to the banks of the River Isle where you can play boules, fish, rock climb or pan for gold. The house has an enclosed garden to the rear with a large oak sleeper deck, bbq, garden furniture and sun loungers (perfect for dining 'en plein air' and stargazing at night). There are woodburning stoves and heating throughout.

We had the great good fortune to be able to spend five weeks in Jumilhac. The house is very special, so much character but renovated with care and taste. And it had everything that we could possibly want. During the first cooler weeks we put another log on the burner and watched some DVDs from the library but as soon as the sun came out it was evenings playing pétanque, barbecuing and enjoying good food and inexpensive wines around the patio table. The kitchen particularly is extremely well equipped (much better than ours at home!) so it was fun to cook in, in fact in the five weeks we only felt the need to eat out on one occasion.

The location is pretty well perfect, two minutes from the village square( and bar!) yet the same for starting points for some great walks, along the river, through the hills to sleepy villages. The equestrian centre is well worth a visit, just five minutes drive. We were a little unsure, as inexperienced over 50s, whether we would be able to enjoy the riding but it turned out to be very relaxed, a fantastic way to see the surrounding countryside complete with deer chasing across the hillside - we went twice!

There are innumerable good places to drive to for days out, we enjoyed Brantome, St Jean de Cole, Segur le Chateau, Brive market, Hautfort, too many more to mention. We found the best supermarket shopping to be in Intermarche at Thiviers - great wine for around two euros.

We never did manage a tour of the Chateau though so it looks like we'll just have to come back another time! Thanks Nigel, Sue, hope to return one day.

Karen, Ruth and Roy.

Lovely house in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We (3 adults and 3 young children) stayed at the house over the easter holidays. As other reviewers have stated the house is finished to an incredibly high standard, better in fact than hotels we have stayed in, and the photographs really don't do it justice. It is a charming property, deceptively large and very comfortable.

It was a very straight forwards drive down through France and the information Nigel and Sue provided got us there without delay.

The house felt immediately homely and the information pack was excellent and provided useful information for every possible issue we could have whilst there as well as lots of ideas and advice regarding local attractions, shops and points of interest.

The town of Jumilhac itself and the fabulous chateau is only a couple of minutes walk away. The chateau is well worth a visit, as are the local shops for your bread and groceries. For bigger shops it is a very simple drive to the nearby towns.

Although there are many activities/places to visit in the region we spent much of our time there walking in the countryside at hand and playing down by one of the most scenic rivers i have ever seen, where you can also try your luck panning for gold (which the kids loved). We also went horse riding at one of the local stables.

The weather was perfect whilst we were there, and we were able to make the most of the garden area and bbq, but should you be unlucky enough to have bad weather, the house is a substantial size and filled with plenty of things to keep young and old guests amused such as the pool table / ping pong table / books / toys and games.

We had a very relaxing time in Jumilhac and I would happily stay in the house again.

Simply Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

The house is finished to an extremely high standard and is a credit to the owners. Spotlessly clean, well laid out and equiped, spacious with contemporary interior. A short walk to the picturesque village with beautiful chateau. We really enjoyed the games facilities: pool, table football and especially the outdoor table tennis & boules. Small perfectly designed garden with the best BBQ ever! All in all, must be one of the best rental accommodation in France in this price bracket.

A beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

We arrived in the Village of Jumilac le Grand and were greeted by the imposing and stunning view of the floodlit Chateau, a very impressive sight. Just down the road from the main square we found the house. It really was such a wonderful find. Nigel and Sue had left some French goodies on the kitchen island and it was such a nice touch. The photographs don't do the house justice, it has been renovated so beautifully and to such a high standard, the kitchen and bathrooms are a real treat. We were very warm even on some chilly nights, the log burners make for a very cosy evening.

The village has everything you need, we walked 2 minutes up to the square each morning for our fresh pain au chocolate, and the small supermarket has most basics.

If you want to explore a very pretty part of the Dordogne, from a typical sleepy French village and stay in a wonderful house, then this is the place for you, we had a very relaxing time and can highly recommend it.

Perfect family rustic home

  • 5 of 5

I came with my partner, 8 year old son and parents here for a week and everyone had a wonderful week. It's a beautiful house - rustic but not outdated - and every thought has been given to detail from the beautiful floors to the carefully selected vintage furniture. Our son loved the fact there was so much to do in the actual house so that if it rained, it didn't matter a jot! There was ping pong, table football, pool and boules and the house was a lovely place just to spend the day or the evening in with its spacious rooms and open plan living and terrace (a sun trap!) Jumihac is extremely pretty and all amenities are on your doorstep - we loved the morning walk to the patisserie to get bread, looking at the wild deer on the way, down by the river. It really is idyllic. Jumihac is also a great starting point for seeing other fantastic things in the region, such as prehistoric parcs (kids will love those) trogladyte dwellings and the beautiful Dordogne towns and villages such as Montaignac - beautiful! And St Jean le Cole. We spent a blissful week and I would fully recommend this. house.

From the Owner

The North of the Dordogne is an unspoilt area of France with lots of history and friendly welcoming people. It doesn't get too crowded, even in the summer. We love the fact that our house is on the edge of the village so that we do not have to use the car every day.

Activity and Interests

There are lakes in the area (plan d'eau) with sandy areas for bathing (the nearest is Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche - about 15 min drive). You can also hire canoes and motorboats at the plan d'eau at Rouffiac (25 Mins drive).

Jumilhac is about 50 mins drive from Limoges airport. (Ryannair flights from Stansted, East Midlands and Leeds Bradford)

We are about 7 hours drive from Calais, and 6 hours from Dieppe.

The house is a few minutes walk from the centre of the village of Jumilhac le Grand where there is a grocery, bakery (wonderful French breads and fresh croissants etc baked daily), butcher, restaurant, bar, hair salon, post office, tourist office, pharmacy, ATM, and a chateau! 13 km from Saint Yrieix la Perche (shops, hospital, large supermarkets).

Further Details:

Jumilhac is within the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park, a protected area with a rich heritage. The castle of Jumilhac is part of the Richard the Lionheart Route together with other neighbouring castles (Nexon, Coussac-Bonneval and Chalus). There is lots to do in the area ranging from castles and prehistoric caves to horse riding, music venues and paint balling.

There are public swimming pools nearby including one in Jumilhac which is open air and heated (July and August), and one 15 mins drive away in St Yrieix which is indoor all year round and outdoor in summer with slides. There is a multi court and small skate park next to the swimming pool in Jumilhac.

There are often special events- medieval fetes, vide greniers (French car boot sales), exhibitions etc, and the local tourist office in the village square are always happy to help with ideas of how to fill your days.

There are also regular events such as the farmers market on a Sunday morning in Jumilhac in front of the Chateau, and the weekly night market in St Yrieix (stalls selling and cooking local produce for you to eat on long tables with the locals while you listen to live French music.)

So....there is lots to do, but we have also had guests who hardly leave the village and immediate area. They walk up to the village for croissants in the morning, perhaps stopping for a cafe au lait in the square. Have a lazy lunch followed by a stroll down to the river for a walk or a paddle. Stoke up the barbecue, open a bottle of wine and relax, or wander up to the square for a drink or a meal overlooking the floodlit chateau!
