About Jackie Turner

Jackie is your host and will do everything she can to make your stay special.

Jackie Turner purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Jackie Turner chose Dorchester

The cottage is part of Abbeyfeale Farmhouse which in turn was originally part of a larger farming complex dating back to 1770.

We live in the main house adjacent to the cottage. When we bought the property in 1999 the house had been refurbished but the cottage was a fairly dilapidated stone barn which could only be accessed from outside. The present cottage was created about 15 years ago, making the best of the original features.

The buildings no longer have a farming connection but we have a beautiful photograph of a former owner using a horse drawn plough in the local fields.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Our stay here at Abbeyfeale was a joy; peaceful, the hosts were very accommodating, the little extras, i.e. cake, strawberries and cream, loaf, butter were a nice touch. Highly recommended." (CJ, June 2012)

"Loved it. All done just right. If we opened a similar operation we would be calling Jackie for tips" (TH & AP Oct 2012).

"Very good value. Everything was perfect. Warm and Welcome....We have stayed in a lot of cottages over the years and this is the nicest we have been in" (M&JB Dec 2012).

"It is in a lovely peaceful location....good walks straight from the door......we wanted somewhere that would be enjoyable and comfortable to spend the long evenings....again we were not dissapointed. The barn is spacious and nicely furnished to a very good standard. The accomodation was spotlessly clean and equipped with everything you could need, including a quality TV with Sky, a DVD player with a wide selection of discs. (Pav, Jan 2013).

Abbeyfeale Farmhouse is only one mile from the Dorset Coast and the famous Coastal Path which runs for 600 miles from Minehead to Poole. Ringstead Bay is the closest beach and stretches for about a mile so you can always find a quiet spot. You can walk to the beach in about 30 minutes through beautiful scenery or you can drive (toll road costs £5 but parking is then free).

There is very little public transport in Dorset so the use of a car is useful if you wish to explore the wider area. However the immediate area is ideal for a relaxing break, exploring the beautiful coast and countryside on foot.

Dorchester and Weymouth are on the main train line from London:

Train Stations: Dorchester 7 miles

Weymouth 6 miles

Abbeyfeale Farmhouse is well situated for exploring West Dorset, a designated 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'

Weymouth: 6 miles

Dorchester: 7 miles

Abbotsury (swannery and tropical gardens) 13 miles

Monkey World: 10 miles

Lulworth Cove: 10 miles

Swanage: 25 miles

Local Shopping:

The kitchen is well equipped and the following ‘basics’ are provided:

• Tea, coffee, sugar and milk to start you off

• Cooking oil, vinegar, salt and pepper

• Loaf of bread and butter and jam

We can also arrange for shopping to be delivered before you arrive if you let us have a list of your requirements in good time. The main supermarkets will also deliver for a nominal cost if you place an order in advance.

There is a very good farm shop in Osmington (1 mile) and Spar and Co-op mini-markets in Preston (3 miles). Craig’s Farm Shop in Osmington sells dairy produce, bread, organically produced bacon and meat, vegetables, ice cream and various other products including newspapers. They also provide a small café / tea-room and serve excellent cream teas. At Chalbury roundabout, which is 1 mile after the Co-op, there is a delicatessen and pharmacy. All of these local shops are open 7 days a week and the Co-op and Spar are open late into the evening.

The nearest cash point is at the Co-op.

The nearest petrol is 3 miles away on the Wool Road.

There is an excellent fish and chip shop in Preston, (‘Stacey’s’), and your nearest pubs are the Sunray (now renamed The Sly Fox) in Osmington and the Smugglers in Osmington Mills. Walking into Osmington and Preston isn’t that easy as there is no footpath but it is a lovely 1 mile walk across the fields to the Smugglers (take a torch).

Directions By Car:

There is ample car parking at the property. Directions from your home to Abbeyfeale can be obtained from any of the internet map sites e.g. www.transportdirect.info/ or www.bing.com/maps. Simply enter your home post code and the destination post code DT28NE. Be careful if you are using a satnav as the post code covers a very large area and has recently been extended. From A353 Weymouth Road turn left signposted Ringstead / Beach Cafe; after 200 yards, at bottom of hill, turn left by red post box and sign post for Upton Grange onto narrow private road; Abbeyfeale Barn / Farmhouse is 100 yards at end of lane through wooden gate.

Notes on accommodation: The Abeyfeale barn conversion was awarded 4 stars In 2012 under the 'Visit England Quality in Tourism Scheme'. The barn was converted in 2000 retaining many of the original features and character. A quality, oak kitchen was added in 2012 to make the accommodation fully independent of the main house. Central heating ensures the barn is warm in winter and the thick stone walls keep it cool and pleasant in summer. The owners live in the adjoining house and can be contacted at any time. Outside: Abbeyfeale Farmhouse is set in large gardens surrounded by woodland and farmlands. Guests have exclusive use of the private front garden and a patio table and chairs are provided for your use. A barbecue is available on request. Parking is available immediately adjacent to the front door of the property. Utility Room: The accommodation does not have its own utility room but we are happy to provide a laundry service for a small additional cost. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen and towels are included. Clean towels and linen will be provided weekly.

Fantastic cottage in perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was pretty difficult to find as the postcode led us all over.

The owner met us on arrival and was very friendly giving us a tour around the cottage. The property was a lot bigger than the pictures would indicate. Very clean and has all the essentials such as an oven , dish washer , tv etc. Cooking utilities are included. Initially we thought the price was a little steep but the cottage and location provided value for money.

Very close to Weymouth roughly 15 minutes drive dependent on traffic.

Lots of pubs/restaurants within a 5 minute drive. The beach is very close however it is a pebble beach but great walks and hardly anyone around. There is a cafe on the beach too.

Overall great little cottage in a brilliant location. We stayed as two adults and a 1 year old child.

Lovely relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

The accommodation was excellent and spotless and Jackie was very welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. Jackie had provided lots of 'goodies' for our arrival and we particularly enjoyed the Victoria sponge cake, which was really needed after coming back from a long walk. We had wonderful weather and were able to fully appreciate the spectacular coastal walks and lovely scenery. A lovely relaxing break.

Excellent accommodation

  • 5 of 5

a very comfortable, extremely well equipped cottage which was very spacious for 2 people. There were basic groceries provided on our arrival and a home made cake which was delicious and very welcome with a cup of tea when we arrived. The cottage is very near to Weymouth, within walking distance of a pub (although is is across fields) and surrounded by beautiful countryside and lovely coastal walks. We would certainly visit again.

Lovely retreat

  • 5 of 5

We have just stayed at Jackie's place for 4 nights and had a lovely time. The barn was spotlessly clean and we received such a warm welcome from the owner Jackie.. It was our first holiday with our 4 month old and we were looking for a good location in which to see the sights of Dorset and somewhere peaceful and quiet and this little gem ticked all the boxes... We found the place easily enough and found it to be central for all the sights we were interested in.. I found Jackie to be most helpful but not at all intrusive... She baked us the most delicious cake and made sure we had the basics (tea, coffee, milk etc) to start us off... I can honestly say you won't go wrong staying at the barn
