Updated: 25-Oct-2016
House in Sletten, Humlebæk, Zealand, Denmark - Peaceful Location, 2 Minutes Walk From The Beach, In A Beautiful Harbour Village

The cottage is a characterful old fisherman's cottage close to the beach, in the lovely old fishing village of Sletten. It has good outside space, with lawn and terraces. It is located about 30km north of Copenhagen, along the old coast road towards Elsinore, and is about 45 mins' drive from Copenhagen airport. The cottage comfortably sleeps 5 but can easily accommodate 6, has 3 bedrooms (with a 4th bunk room in the outhouses, useable during the summer). It has a good cottage kitchen, and a lovely sitting room, with a conservatory for sitting in during the summer months overlooking the sea towards Sweden.

About the Owner

My brothers and I have owned the property for 6 years and inherited it from my mother, who owned it since 1995, when she inherited it from her parents with whom she jointly bought it in 1972. We have spent many happy times there both in summer and winter (both with snow and without!) The house is extremely peaceful and idyllically situated. A day spent lazing at the house or in the garden, or swimming at the local beach 100m away is low key and relaxed, or you can take a trip into Copenhagen or Elsinore for sightseeing or shopping. When you come, please don't forget to sign the guest book too!

Nice house lovely location

  • 3 of 5

The house was clean and comfortable and ideally located. Booking process could have been better had to chase confirmation and then arrival instructions no linen or towels on arrival despite paying for these. However after a couple of phone calls they were delivered.

Lovely cottage in a beautiful old village with wonderful views

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely peaceful family stay in this gorgeous cottage which is just a few hundred yards from a lovely sandy beach and which offers beautiful views across the rooftops to the sea and Sweden beyond from the comfortable sun room.

Copenhagen is an easy train ride from the nearby station. The Louisiana is within walking distance or a very short drive and is an absolute must. Another highlight was the Viking Ship Museum at Roskilde.

The cottage is very well equipped. We had a slight hiccup on arrival because the sheets and towels we had booked had not been left in the cottage, but a phone call to the very helpful owner got this sorted out within half an hour.

All in all, we were very impressed. We had a lovely time and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Denmark and this cottage in particular.

Lovely cottage

  • 4 of 5

A lovely fisherman's cottage with views of the Baltic Sea and a nice relaxed garden. There was a lot to do in the area. We loved Louisiana, the modern art museum just a mile up the coast, we took the train to Copenhagen, explored the northern coast, visited Fredericksborg Castle and even crossed the bridge for a day in Sweden! The weather was very poor on the first two days of our stay and the house took some time to warm up. Unfortunately there were extensive road works in the village at this time, so it was noisy during the day and parking was a little fraught - and we had a couple of power cuts (thanks for your help with those, Hans!) But it is a special place and we did enjoy our stay, and particularly loved the conservatory room which remained light long into the evening.

Just by way of improving the holiday experience here, a brief tour of the house on arrival, a bottle of milk in the fridge or garden flowers in a vase would have added a welcoming touch.

Wonderful time...

  • 5 of 5

We booked the cottage for 10 days in August as a family of 4. The pictures do not do the place justice, it is absolutely beautiful inside and out The cottage is perfect both in terms of location and styling. Bright and light in the day sitting in the sun room and cosy at night with candles and the log burner, yes it was a little chilly one evening!

We could see the sea from the cottage and swam everyday, amazing fresh fish at the harbour, pastries from the bakery and fabulous meat and cheese from the baker..all by bikes that we rented. Close to Copenhagen for day visits and easy to drive to most of Denmark form here.

I have booked through Owners Direct for several years and this is an absolute gem of a holiday house, we almost don't want to share it!

Karen Blixen Museum
Restaurant Sletten

From the Owner

We inherited the cottage, so have had many happy years of experience of the area. It is less than an hour's drive from Copenhagen airport, and 2 hours from Roedby, with the car ferry to Puttgarden in Germany. Sletten is an old fishing village with a sailing harbour (and a good fishmonger, supplied partly by local fishermen), full of thatched cottages. There is a local sandy beach perfect for families, with a bathing bridge in the summer and shallow, calm water stretching out at least 100m into the sea. Within 20 mins' drive or train ride are Elsinore (Kronborg, good shopping and restaurants), Fredensborg and Rungsted / Horsholm, with good local museums including Karen Blixen's house. The internationally renowned Louisiana gallery is a 20 min walk, and Copenhagen is 1/2 hour's drive.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Copenhagen at 62 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Restaurant Sletten at 400 Metres Nearest Ferry : Helsingor at 10 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Simon's Golf Club at 5.6 Kilometres Nearest Train : Humlebaek at 1.7 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : Helsingor to Copenhagen and beyond at 4 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Restaurant Sletten at 400 Metres Nearest Beach : Peter Mads at 100 Metres

The cottage is 200m from the local beach, Peder Mads Strand. This is a very popular local beach that is sandy, and has a bathing pier during the summer. The water is extremely calm, and is shallow a good way out (200-300m) so is generally very safe for children. There is also a good ice-cream stand there during the summer!

The nearest airport is Copenhagen airport. This is approximately 60km from the cottage, mostly on motorways, so it takes approximately 45mins to drive to and from. Alternatively, the train goes from the airport direct to the local station at Humlebæk in slightly less than an hour, which is 15 mins' walk from the cottage.

The nearest seaport is at Elsinore (Helsingør) with ferries to Sweden. Esbjerg, with ferries to Harwich (UK) is approximately 330km away and about 3 hours' drive away.

Nearest shops are 1km away in Humlebæk on Gamle Strandvej, or in the Humlebæk Centre (2km driving, 1.1km walking).

There is an outstanding and well known modern art gallery about 2km away, Louisiana.

Fredensborg Palace is 11km away (20mins drive)

Helsingør town is 11km away (good shopping, local restaurants, old town) and is where Kronborg is (Hamlet's castle).

Copenhagen is 40 mins by train or about 30-40 mins drive south (about 30km).

The Karen Blixen house in Rungsted is 10mins drive.

Further Details:

The nearest main shops are 1km (approx 15 mins' walk) away, west of the railway. There is an outstanding butcher here (meat and cheese, and all Danish open sandwich toppings imaginable), a good cheesemonger, a nice greengrocer and an excellent baker. On the other side of the railway (2km drive) is the Humlebæk Center with 3 supermarkets, the post office, a second branch of the baker, chemists, greengrocer, Nordea bank, etc. There is also an excellent fishmonger at Sletten harbour, called Fiskehuset.

Sletten has a very good restaurant called Restaurant Sletten, which is run by the same people as Formel B in Copenhagen.

Other good restaurants nearby are:

Restaurant Mikkelgaard (8mins drive)

Cafe Hyacinth in Helsingør - good for Danish lunch

Cafe og Restaurant Madam Sprunck in Helsingør - classic Danish cooking for lunch or dinner

Other restaurant recommendations on request!

There are 3 petrol stations in Humlebæk, 2 on the Gamle Strandvej near the shops and 1 on the way to the motorway Humlebæk exit.

There is a lot of information about things to do in the house.

Interesting places to visit include: Louisiana the local harbour, the palaces in the area including Kronborg, Fredensborg (grounds only except in July), the local towns especially around the coast are very pretty.

In Copenhagen, some popular attractions include:

Tivoli - just opposite the main train station, this is one of the oldest (and most beautiful!) permanent pleasure gardens still in existence. It includes theatres, restaurants, and rides for all ages.

The Little Mermaid statue, and the surrounding Langelinie park is very scenic

Strøget is the longest pedestrianised shopping street in the world and has many good shops and sights around it (eg the Round Tower), ending in the Kongens Nytorv square and Nyhavn, a classic old harbour with many good bars and restaurants.

Cycle hire - nearest is in Snekkersten (about 5km, 2 train stops) - see http://www.helsingor-cykeludlejning.dk

  • Notes on accommodation: This is a characterful, old fisherman's cottage surrounded by classic cottage gardens, which was refurbished and insulated internally in 2006. It is full of charm and many of the old structural features were retained. The total internal floor area is approximately 90 square meters. The ground floor consists of the kitchen, the sitting /dining room (which has a wood burning stove) and the conservatory, and the bathroom. Important: The staircase is at one corner of the property, so the bedrooms on the first floor are in series - you will walk through two bedrooms to reach the third - making it ideal for families and those who are not too worried about privacy! Please note: Sheet hire is now available at DKK130 pp or you can bring your own linen. Outside: The gardens surround the house, and the hard landscaping was refurbished in 2010. There is lawn rose filled garden beds at the front and side of the cottage, and a terrace on the other side of the cottage surrounded by wisteria, honeysuckle and clematis. At the back of the cottage there is a yard with outhouses (some are only for the use of the owner, but one has a bunk bed that may also be used during the summer months, and the other houses the washing machine and drier), and above these is a second sun terrace and tea pavilion overlooking the village and sea towards Sweden. Utility Room: Outside utility room with washing machine and tumble drier. Useable all year, but needs door open when tumble drier is being used. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen not included - please bring with you. Cleaning is mandatory after the rental. Other: Conservatory with extra dining table and coffee table, for use during the warmer months. View over the garden and the sea towards Sweden
