About this property

Idyllic Thatched Cottage With Garden Overlooking The Sea, North Of Copenhagen

The cottage is a characterful old fisherman's cottage close to the beach, in the lovely old fishing village of Sletten. It has good outside space, with lawn and terraces. It is located about 30km north of Copenhagen, along the old coast road towards Elsinore, and is about 45 mins' drive from Copenhagen airport. The cottage comfortably sleeps 5 but can easily accommodate 6, has 3 bedrooms (with a 4th bunk room in the outhouses, useable during the summer). It has a good cottage kitchen, and a lovely sitting room, with a conservatory for sitting in during the summer months overlooking the sea towards Sweden.

The perfect cottage in a wonderful setting - and half an hour from Copenhagen!
Our first trip to Denmark, and a cottage chosen for its location near to Copenhagen but with a touch of the sea. The cottage is undersold by its description and photos - the setting is beautiful, sun glinting off the Øresund in the morning, a lovely cottage garden with multiple sitting out spots (yes, even in October!) and a sun room for eating and relaxing. The wood burner kept us toasty warm in the evenings and the kitchen did its job perfectly. A short stroll away are the beach and the harbour, perfect for an early morning wake-up. With great local supermarkets and the quick and comfortable train into Copenhagen, it’s hard to imagine a better spot from which to enjoy the area - and the Louisiana is a wonderful art gallery and a lovely spot to visit to have so close. The owners are very helpful, too! Just check you’re happy with the bedroom arrangement (all explained in the details - there are no unpleasant surprises!), book and enjoy!

An extremely charming place
The property is at least as beautiful as presented in the pictures. Perfectly located, nicely furnished, full of charme. We (2 adults, 2 children) spent three lovely days in autumn. A lot of sights are nearby and easily reached by bike (Louisiana, Helsingor, Fredensborg) or by Public Transport (Copenhagen). We can recommend the place without hesitation and would like to come back.

cosy, characterful cottage with lovely sea views in a pretty Danish harbour
We spent a relaxed week, walking, cycling and sightseeing. We visited nearby Louisiana, an exceptional art gallery with extensive gardens by the sea, great for adults and children. We went to Helsingor and visited the castle and harbour with the impressive maritime museum and great street food hall. We cycled to various beaches and enjoyed a day on Hornbeck beach. A wonderfully family holiday.

Nice house lovely location
The house was clean and comfortable and ideally located. Booking process could have been better had to chase confirmation and then arrival instructions no linen or towels on arrival despite paying for these. However after a couple of phone calls they were delivered.

Lovely cottage in a beautiful old village with wonderful views
We had a lovely peaceful family stay in this gorgeous cottage which is just a few hundred yards from a lovely sandy beach and which offers beautiful views across the rooftops to the sea and Sweden beyond from the comfortable sun room. Copenhagen is an easy train ride from the nearby station. The Louisiana is within walking distance or a very short drive and is an absolute must. Another highlight was the Viking Ship Museum at Roskilde. The cottage is very well equipped. We had a slight hiccup on arrival because the sheets and towels we had booked had not been left in the cottage, but a phone call to the very helpful owner got this sorted out within half an hour. All in all, we were very impressed. We had a lovely time and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Denmark and this cottage in particular.

About the host

My brothers and I have owned the property for 6 years and inherited it from my mother, who owned it since 1995, when she inherited it from her parents with whom she jointly bought it in 1972. We have spent many happy times there both in summer and winter (both with snow and without!) The house is extremely peaceful and idyllically situated. A day spent lazing at the house or in the garden, or swimming at the local beach 100m away is low key and relaxed, or you can take a trip into Copenhagen or Elsinore for sightseeing or shopping. When you come, please don't forget to sign the guest book too!

Why they chose this property

We inherited the cottage, so have had many happy years of experience of the area. It is less than an hour's drive from Copenhagen airport, and 2 hours from Roedby, with the car ferry to Puttgarden in Germany.
Sletten is an old fishing village with a sailing harbour (and a good fishmonger, supplied partly by local fishermen), full of thatched cottages. There is a local sandy beach perfect for families, with a bathing bridge in the summer and shallow, calm water stretching out at least 100m into the sea.
Within 20 mins' drive or train ride are Elsinore (Kronborg, good shopping and restaurants), Fredensborg and Rungsted / Horsholm, with good local museums including Karen Blixen's house. The internationally renowned Louisiana gallery is a 20 min walk, and Copenhagen is 1/2 hour's drive.

What makes this property unique

The cottage is warm and cosy in the winter, and opens up in the summer. It is 5 mins' drive to local shops including 3 supermarkets, and excellent local bakers, butcher and greengrocer.
It is easy driving distance or train into Copenhagen or Elsinore.
The cottage has 3 bedrooms, a sitting / dining room and a kitchen, with a conservatory for use in the summer. There is a lovely wood burning stove in the middle of the house which is perfect for cooler weather.
Surrounding the house are gardens and terraces for meals and playing outside.
