About the property

Spacious old town house - Verandah With Private View Over The Armancon

Bigger than it looks from outside, a comfortable home from home enjoyed by us and our friends for the last 12 years. It is not a property furnished for rental, but a two bedroom holiday home with floors of local marble, walls 18" thick and a delightful atmosphere because of the personally chosen furniture and pictures and the huge traditional stove which, in winter, heats up the entire space.

Outside is the passerelle, a roomy balcony with seating for four or more and a unique private view over the river. It faces south and even in the cold March of 2018, was pleasantly warm in the sunshine. Perfect for aperitifs. There is also a little garden to the side, planted with culinary herbs and not visible from the road. Only 5 minutes walk from the Notre Dame Church and town centre, yet with a vista of trees and river outside. Herons, kingfishers and ducks are the only other visitors !

There are two large double bedrooms, one with its own bathroom.

At the mezzanine level is a shower room, overlooking the river. There are two staircases so that the two bedrooms can be independent. On the ground floor there is an entrance hall, downstairs loo, then a very large room divided into kitchen, dining and sitting areas, and finally the 'buanderie' or utility room.

The house is fully equipped and the kitchen ideal if you like cooking. There is a TV, wifi and lots of books

About Judy Byrne

We fell in love with Semur and its mix of mediaeval town and beautiful countryside. Our cottage is rented out to help recoup some costs, but is not a profit-making venture. We enjoy going there ourselves. Friends we have let the house to have hired bicycles, played golf, sampled wine and cuisine, shopped or just walked along the river, round the town, through the countryside.

We are now retired and live in Alfriston in East Sussex.

Judy Byrne purchased this house in 2005

Why Judy Byrne chose Semur-en-Auxois

It is possible to drive to Semur, or to fly to Paris and drive; it is also very easy to come by train to Montbard, where there is a regular bus service right into Semur

The Burgundian weather is drier and sunnier than in the UK

There are many celebrations and events in the town, from the invasion of the Vikings in May, to the summer horse race and fireworks and communal dinner on 14 August. The excellent Tourist Office has plenty of information.

Judy first came to Burgundy at the age of 17, as monitrice in colonies de vacances and we have frequently visited this area ever since.

What makes this house unique

You can park two cars by the river beside the house. The walks in and around Semur and along the river are varied and pretty. You have all the advantages of the town ~ shops, bars, restaurants and services ~ yet within minutes from the house, you can be walking in the glorious Burgundy countryside which lies all round Semur.

A well equipped gite in a lovely area of FRance

  • 4 of 5

Had a super week here, in lovely sunshine. The gite is very well equipped, and has everything you need. The fans upstairs brought a welcome breeze to the bedrooms, even on hot nights.

There are several boulangeries within walking distance, up the hill, and a super supermarket at the edge of the town (walkable).

Semur en Auxois is in a good location for touring the area, and there is plenty to see and do.

Judy was very informative, and easy to get in touch with.

Cockermouth, Cumbria, UK.

Marvellous house in stunning location.

  • 5 of 5

The property is as advertised & more so - the balcony is better than the photos suggest & the river side of the house is far nicer than the street view.

We stayed for a fortnight & thoroughly enjoyed the time. The house is old, comfortable, a little quirky & very well modernised. We lacked nothing by way of equipment, able to cook a number of meals. We'd plenty of contact with Judy before arrival & the information she gave was helpful.

Semur is a delightful town, narrow medieval gated streets paved with setts, with good facilities. I enjoyed the very steep walk up into town every morning for the bread, & I'm well into my 70s. For us a bonus was the lack of other English around. I can recommend this property without reservation.

Owner's Response: We are so glad our guests had a nice time. We love the house and Semur too, and are only sad we cannot be there as often as we used to be ~ before the arrival of grandchildren !

A week in Burgundy

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful house in a wonderful location. Semur en Auxois is an interesting and historic village. There is a seemingly endless number of varied and beautiful locations within a short drive. Although we did not visit them, Dijon and Beaune are within comfortable distance for a day visit. Backing onto the river, the house provides a private sanctuary. All facilities are available in Semur. Great for cyclists. I cannot imagine not coming back.
