About the property

Peaceful cottage in West Stafford, Nr Dorchester, Dorset

A well appointed cottage with a lovely rural setting. The cottage was designed by Thomas Hardy before he found fame as an author. The village is featured in his novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Situated on the edge of the picturesque village of West Stafford within easy driving distance of the beautiful Jurrasic Coast. Walking distance to the village pub and restaurant. The cottage is ideally situated for those who enjoy walking and cycling holidays. A log burning stove provides cheer during cold spells. Children & dogs are welcome.

About Mary Allen

We are a professional couple living in London with Daisy our Jack Russell Terrier.

We have two grown up sons who still enjoy trips to the cottage and have fond memories of it from their childhood.

Mary Allen purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Mary Allen chose Dorchester

We have owned the cottage since 2002 having previously spent many happy holidays in Dorset with our two young boys who are now grown up but still enjoy their visits to the cottage and the tranquility of country life as a counterpoint to urban living.

We love the area and its proximity to the beautiful Jurassic coastline, there are so many unspoilt beaches that are readily accessible and only a few minutes drive a way by car.

What makes this cottage unique

On a summer's evening we especially enjoy walking with the dog down to the village pub The Wise Man Inn that serves good range of fine ales and has a very good restaurant attached (booking is advised).

Over the years we have slowly improved the cottage and it now benefits from mod cons such as WiFi and satellite tv

Charming, quiet village cottage

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I had need to stay somewhere for 2 months in this area. We settled on this lovely property, and were very glad that we did. We were very happy here, enjoying the quiet of the village and the fabulous nearby pub (1/2 mile away). Dorchester with all its many facilities was only 2 1/2 miles away. The coast at Ringwood Bay was only 15 minutes drive. All in all a great location. The 3 bedrooms are a wee bit small but were certainly adequate for our needs even though it was for 8 weeks ! The kitchen and sitting room were cute and country style with views either of the lane or the garden and sun trap patio. Thoroughly recommend it !

Good location, lovely garden, needs some TLC

  • 3 of 5

A mixed bag - a small property with an interesting provenance, being designed by Thomas Hardy, and standing some way out of West Stafford village on the main road, opposite Talbothayes Lodge, the house designed by Hardy for his brother. Despite being on the main road, it was quiet and blessed with a nice long garden; there was a little swallow's nest in the back porch, filled with three baby birds so the children had a treat watching the parents flying in and out to feed them. So far so rural. Alas as a place to stay it was a little disappointing - cramped bedrooms (beds are too big for the sizes of the rooms) and we lost track of the times knees were bumped or ankles turned. The one bathroom is in a state of repair which would have shamed one of the houses I lived in as an undergraduate. It really needs some attention! It grieves me to say, too, that the house was not very clean when we arrived - dead flies and wasps on the window ledges, hairs in the sink and bathtub, cobwebs in the kitchen - and we had to spend a while cleaning up on arrival, with products we had to go into Dorchester to buy as there wasn't a smear of washing up liquid/cleaner etc provided.. Not ideal. Also items such as the logs for the stove promised on the website were absent - just a sorry looking empty bag of indeterminate age. The house has great natural advantages - it could easily be smart, and has a lovely setting smack in the middle of Hardy Country - but it is in definite need of closer attention as far as cleanliness and being a welcoming place is concerned.
