Modernised Farmhouse In Bessuge, Chapaize, Burgundy

Overview

Property

Updated: 13-Sep-2016
House in Bessuge, Nr. Tournus, Saone-et-Loire, Burgundy, France - Comfortable House With Stunning Balcony Views, Close To All Amenities

This independent wing of our home has both the charm and privacy that guests are entitled to expect for their holiday in this most beautiful part of France. The house was originally our own holiday home and is offered as we ourselves most enjoyed it. For us its overriding feature is the first floor balcony where we would eat almost all our meals, or simply sit and soak up the stunning views across the valley to the distant hills, usually with a glass of Macon Blanc wine, as the sun went down. Originally a small farmhouse with adjacent barns, and constructed from the mellow local stone, we have over the years transformed the house into a modern, comfortable dwelling, consisting of two good-sized double bedrooms with independent bathrooms, a cosy sitting room and a large kitchen/dining room. The peace and quiet to be found in rural Burgundy is as legendary as its glorious wines, although we are constantly surprised at the wealth of leasure and cultural activities within easy reach.

Very relaxing in beautiful countryside

  • 5 of 5

Just home from our 2nd visit to this really comfortable ,very well equiped property with a VERY comfortable large bed! The house is in a very small quiet hamlet in lush green countryside. An ideal spot for ramblers and cyclists or just being lazy!! sitting out on the verandah reading, listening to nature with glass of local wine - what more do you want? There is a very good restaurant in the neighbouring village of Chapaize ( advised to book for a weekend meal ) This village has an ancient very interesting church. Cormatin is also nearby where there are 2 Boulangeries, cafe/restaurants, a Tabac, a good small supermarket, one or two other small shops all on the main road through the village and a magnificent Chateau.10 miles away in Cluny there is a large supermarket which also has petrol. Cluny is one of THE biggest equestrian centres in France where there are frequent Gymkhanas. The town is well worth spending at least one day there as there is SO much to see and do.

We have enjoyed our holidays so much we are seriously considering a return visit in the very near future.

Un tres jolie gite!

  • 5 of 5

The gite is ideally located, being only twenty minutes from the autoroute. The drive from the autoroute is particularly pleasant through the rolling vineyards, fields and hills of south Burgundy. Robin made us all very welcome and we immediately felt very comfortable in his beautiful Gite. The villages of Chapaize and Brancion are a must, along with visiting the charming local markets. Thank you Robin, we look forward to coming again.

An lovely break in an idyllic unspoilt location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a short break in Mid August. The weather was wonderful, the welcome was fantastic, with a glass of local Cremant on arrival. The gite is spacious, well equipped and very tastefully restored. Robin was a wonderful host and recommended places to visit. We took the children to Brancion, and visited a lovely market in Chapaize. Overall a wonderful stay, in a wonderful gite, highly recommended.

An idyllic and peaceful hideaway in rural France

  • 5 of 5

We had a really lovely stay here, the guest house was more of a home from home, with everything you could possibly need to make a stay comfortable. Our host was ever so helpful and full of suggestions and advice.

The sleepy village of Bessuge is well positioned for wine tasting and visiting lakes, cycling and exploring the towns and all that Burgundy has to offer.

The view from the main balcony was my highlight, across fields of barley with the occasional mooing of cows in the distance. Lovely!

Excellent Gite in brilliant location

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we have stayed at Robins place and never normally go back to a place twice, but from his welcome to the Gite, to the location, they are all just perfect. I know we are going to find a way to visit again some time!

Nearest Airport : Lyon at 70 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Cormatin at 3 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Macon at 30 Kilometres Nearest Train : Tournus at 10 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : Tournus at 10 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Chapaize at 1 Kilometres Car: necessary

Beach:

We are lucky to have a large lake with a sandy beach and good swimming facilities within 15 minutes drive. In the high season there is also a cafe, pedalo hire and a lifeguard on duty there.

Travel:

We are about 10 km west of the town of Tournus which is on the A6 Motorway, and approximately 6 hours drive from Calais. Our rural location makes a car essential. The closest airports are Lyon (approx 1.5 hours) or Geneva (approx 2 hours), and the closest TGV stations are at Macon or Le Creusot, (both 30 to 40 minutes drive away). Car hire is available at all these airports and stations.

Distances:

In spite of the seclusion we enjoy, the village of Cormatin is only 2 km away, with bakers and other basic facilities. St Gengeoux le National at 7 km has a greater range of shops for a small town, and a market on alternate Tuesdays. Tournus and Cluny are each about 12 km or 20 mins. Further still, to the north are Chalon (30 mins), Beaune (45 mins) and Dijon (just over the hour). Going south you will find Macon (40 mins) and Lyon (1 hr, 15 mins.

Further Details:

The region of Burgundy is a wonderful mixture of tranquility, culture, gastronomic delight, and sporting and leisure facilities. Apart from the Romanesque churches in our local villages, in close reach we have the town of Tournus with its beautiful pink stoned abbey, and Cluny with its magnificent ruined abbey which was a major centre of Christianity from 900 AD till the Revolution. Burgundy has a wealth of chateaux open for visits, including that in Cormatin, and many of these churches and chateaux are used throughout the year for concerts, music recitals and plays. The world famous Hospice de Beaune, is certainly worth a visit, but so is the lesser known, but equally interesting Hospice in Tournus. Artists of all types can easily be found in most villages, and the prehistoric limestone caves in the local hills are some of the best in France. Both Cluny and Tournus have interesting Saturday markets, but others can also be found somewhere every day of the week. Burgundy is one of the great wine regions of the world, and many visitors take the opportunity to visit a Cave or two locally in the Maconnaise or Cote Chalonaise, or perhaps further afield into the Beaujolais or the Cote de Nuit and Cote d’Or. But Burgundy is also rightly known for its wonderful food, and there is an abundance of local restaurants to suit all budgets, from café/bars with excellent daily menus, through to Michelin starred restaurants of high repute. The disused railway, the Voie Verte, that winds through Burgundy, and has been hard surfaced for walking and cycling, runs close by; and there are many other possibilities for both these activities, with the countryside being well marked and mapped. Opportunities also exist for horse riding, swimming, golf, fishing, boat trips, and hot-air ballooning – take your pick.
