About the property

Peaceful And Secluded cottage in 5 acres of vineyard 10 Mins Drive From Medieval Town Of Castelnuovo Di Garfagnana

Originally a farm cottage, Castello has been lovingly restored to provide a comfortable home whilst retaining a traditional simple charm. Surrounded by vineyard, the house is in the Garfagnana, a peaceful backwater of hills, lakes and old mountain villages in Northern Tuscany. 10m x 5m private pool with paved surround and sun terrace set in extensive lawns. Wood burning pizza oven and BBQ. Spacious roofed terrace overlooking the vines and wooded hillside beyond and paved terrace off the kitchen with views to Lago di Pontecosi and the Apennine mountains. The medieval town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana with supermarkets, bars etc is only 10 mins drive and great for people-watching over a coffee or aperitivo in the main piazza. It has a thriving weekly market, with religious processions, open air concerts and food and wine festivals during the summer. Florence is a 2 hour train journey and can be reached in time for morning coffee.

About Vanessa Bailey

I bought Castello in 1995 and spent many happy years living the 'good life' and bringing the abandoned land and vineyard back to full production. Everyone in the village is so friendly and helpful, and I have made some wonderful friends over the years. Now for family reasons I have returned to live in England but still spend a lot of time at Castello. A few years ago, with encouragement from my family (and particularly my grandson!) I put in the pool and started to lend/rent out the house to family and friends. They in turn recommended it to their friends and it's lovely to see the house lived in and enjoyed by so many people. My Italian friends are very supportive and help me by looking after the house, land and pool to enable my guests to have a relaxed and trouble free holiday.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for letting us stay in your lovely villa. I thought the setting and the views were superb. We managed to see quite a lot in a week - Florence, Lucca and Pisa, also walks to the village above. We walked down to the village where we ate at the pizzeria which was excellent! Melissa and friends Sept 2009, 2010 Melissa and family August 2012

We have had a super time here, it is just lovely whatever the weather. We have explored a lot of the area with your maps and Mary's knowledge. The scenery is wonderful and we love the hilltop towns and villages. Thank you so much for allowing us to come and share your house. Lynn and Jim - Sept 2010

Thank you for a great holiday in your beautiful home in Tuscany which we fell in love with; Garfagnana was spectacular and we loved Castelnuovo! The swimming pool was wonderful and the children didn't want to leave it so we mainly ventured out at night. We would love to return again soon. Sharron, Peter and family - August 2011

Wonderful holiday!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was the perfect answer for our family holiday, as satisfying two daughters aged 6 and 14 can sometimes be difficult! Vanessa, the owner, was very helpful with information about the property and area, booking was trouble-free, and the house when we arrived was clean and welcoming with everything we needed. The grounds and views were idyllic, and it was great to have a private pool where I could lie peacefully on a sun bed reading my book, sometimes with a glass to hand! while my husband and children swam and played table tennis or swing-ball. We visited Lucca, (ice cream in the amphitheatre, window-shopping some very stylish designer shops and then a relaxed cycle ride round the walls). We went to the nearby Adventure Park, with a variety courses to challenge both girls including thrilling zip wires through the trees; we went to a cheese festival inside the walls of the nearby medieval town and to the local weekly market, and we had a spectacular drive over the mountains to spend the day on a glorious sandy beach. We ate out on several evenings spending surprisingly little, but the highlight was lighting the pizza oven and making our own pizzas - and actually becoming quite expert!! We will definitely come back.

Amazing holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful fortnight in this beautiful corner of Tuscany!  The house was spotless when we arrived with a welcoming bottle of Prosecco to greet us, which we drank on the large terrace listening to the church bells and gazing at the beautiful view!  What a great place!  We enjoyed days out to Florence, Lucca and numerous quaint little villages in the hills, and several morning coffees in the piazza of the nearby medieval town of Castelnuovo, then happily returned to our terrace or lazing about round the delightful pool.  The owner was extremely helpful and provided lots of information at the house including recommendations for a number of local restaurants; we had Sunday lunch at La Guardia in the mountain village of Roggio, which was very reasonable with delicious home-cooked food, well worth the winding journey up the mountain roads.  I would thoroughly recommend this lovely cottage for an amazing holiday!

Wonderful country villa

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay and have just booked a second visit in the summer 2016. The area is lovely with lots of places to visit. We visited Lucca ,and Florence. The views are stunning and the location is peaceful, we are hoping to make more use of the inviting pool this time. There are several areas to eat al fresco in sun or shade. The owner Vanessa is friendly and very helpful and informative and will answer any queries you may have.
