We have just returned from spending New Year at Gonville House with friends. It was big enough to comfortably hold all 8 of us and the children could have their own space in the second sitting room. A lovely house that has been beautifully restored and is clean, bright and made us feel very welcome. Shona, Northampton

Relaxing, idyllic, wonderful position.
We had the most fantastic oil day here in August 2015. Had visitiors including four 16 year olds who entertained themselves going to the beach, BBQ walking dog on Tennyson down and trotting up and down to the charming little shop. Piano bar fantastic food and music and we have booked again this year!
An absolutely marvellous weekend spent with the family in this beautiful location. Fantastic walks, great pubs serving high quality food and some really interesting and unusual finds such as Dimona House which was apparently the home of the Victorian photographer Julia Cameron who seemed to know everyone famous in that day. Having access to the Bay and the fantastic landscape is really convenient and the children all loved the freedom and safety the locality offers.
The house is very well maintained and has clearly been completely refurbished providing ample comfortable space for our family of four and the similar size family we shared with. What a therapy it was for us all at half term - we will be back!
What a wonderful setting for an idyllic weekend away!
Freshwater Bay is a lovely, peaceful village with beautiful walks and a sumptuous views from all along the cliff tops. Gonville House is perfectly located to take advantage of these.
As we travelled with a group of friends we were very pleased to find all of the bedrooms were equally well appointed, something which is not always the case. Indeed, the whole house was of a high standard, the living room very comfortable, the kitchen spotless and well equipped, the bathrooms likewise.
We have stayed in many rental houses, this is the first one that we will return to.
A fabulous house with masses of space
Although expectations were high before we arrived here, they were easily met when we arrived at the house. It is a very impressive, handsome building. It is even larger than made out in the photos - it took some time to explore - and is decorated in a lovely modern seaside manner. Everything was spanking clean. We stayed with another family and their children and there was plenty of room to eat and relax with each other but also possible to find a private corner if you wanted some quiet time with a book.
Everything worked - although you do need to use a match for some of the burners in the kitchen (a notice told us this). The gardens were particularly pleasing, and we enjoyed the barbeque on a few evenings. The beds were really comfortable and there was plenty of hot water.
The children in the group loved the nearby beach; they paddled and looked for fossils there.
My husband and I walked up the fabulous Tennyson Downs virtually every day - the views are breath taking and all your troubles get blown away.
After a week we all felt invigorated; it was like an Enid Blyton holiday of old, and it did us no end of good.
We'll be back.
Our group of eight found the property, clean and on the whole well appointed, tastefully decorated and spacious. However there were some anomalies that could be rectified, such as bedroom doors with no catches.
Only two of the five gas rings worked. One of the en-suite showers was
out of order and an update on the kitchen pans would,nt go amiss.
If these snags were addressed it would be perfect.
I can certainly recommend the Island and the Property, lots to see and do we had a lovely week.

Gonville House was one of several lovely large Victorian Houses built in Freshwater Bay when it developed as a centre for Artists and Literary figures in the second half of the 19th Century.
In less than 10 minutes you can walk to Alfred ,Lord Tennyson's house ,whilst Poet Laureate to Queen Victoria, at Farringford or see Julia Cameron's pioneering photography at her home in Dimbola Lodge,(now a museum and exhibition space with excellent tearooms) .
These notable characters in Victorian society chose to make Freshwater Bay their home and drew many fashionable figures to stay in this small village making it ,in turn, it the subject of books by Virginia Woolf and D H Lawrence.
