About Esther Dodd

We are a married couple living in Manchester. We have 2 grown-up sons, our elder son is married and lives in Abu Dhabi and our younger son lives in Manchester.

We have owned Mount Cottage for 8 years and for the first 5 years we kept it solely for personal use. After many requests from friends about the possibility of renting the cottage for holidays we have decided to offer our delightful country retreat through Owners Direct for others to enjoy as well.

Esther Dodd purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Esther Dodd chose Lancaster district

After owning a caravan for 5 years in this area, which we both love for its peaceful and relaxing effects, we decided to buy this cottage nearby so that we could reap the benefits throughout the whole year whereas the caravan site closed during the winter. Winter produces fantastic scenes with snow on the hills and frost on the hedgerows. The wild spring and summer flower displays along the hedgerows and in the fields are a joy and in autumn there are sloes, blackberries and rose hips aplenty to gather for gin and jam making. Walk a short distance uphill from the cottage and you can see the sea at Morecambe and the spectacular mountains of the Lake District. A rarely used bridleway runs past the cottages and into the field beyond and there are many public footpaths all round the area.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is located 10 miles east of the M6, J34 through delightful countryside. Lancaster is an easy 14 miles from the cottage and Lake Windermere is a scenic 45 minute drive. The cottage is 1 of 9 properties that were originally converted in 1987 from farm buildings and barns into holiday accommodation. The cottages are set back from the road and are accessed via a driveway which ensures a quiet and relaxing atmosphere where only the sounds of wild birds and animals can be heard. Over the past 28 years most of the cottages have been bought as permanent residences. As we have spent most of our weekends in the cottage over recent years we know the area very well and have many friends amongst the residents. It is a friendly, relaxing place to unwind and recharge your batteries.

Warm, cosy-- just perfect

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in this cosy, clean, warm, welcoming little cottage was for 4 nights. We arrived on a cold, bleak, rainy night. We had planned to go to a local pub for our evening meal!!!! It didn't happen!!! We were so warm and cosy in front of the lovely log fire that we stayed put ( home-made pasta dish--in the microwave instead of venturing out!!!) The day after, we enjoyed a lovely walk in the sunshine, taking in the most marvellous views-- setting off from the cottage. The following days-- we were on Granny Duty as our daughter lives close by. Each evening we returned to this well-equipped, delightful cottage-- our 'bolt-hole' after very busy days!!! The views from the back of the cottage are just stunning--looking towards Ingleton. We watched the hens, geese, black swans and horses in the fields before us--- and watched the wild birds on the feeders just outside the patio doors, as we enjoyed a relaxing breakfast. This wee cottage is a haven of peace and quiet for anyone who needs a few days to chill out. We hope to return very soon.

Lovely cosy cottage

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here for 2 nights in March, very nice cottage with everything you need. The log burner made it very cosy in the evening. Short drive to the local village and plenty of walks in the surrounding areas. Esther and Mike have a great welcome pack with information on the area and some local walks. Would definitely return here.

Beautiful rural cottage

  • 5 of 5

Really pretty cottage, cosy and compact equipped with everything you could possibly need from bird-watching books to corkscrews to extra warm fleecy rugs. Everything was in immaculate condition and very clean. The weather for most of our holiday was horrendous so we actually spent more time in the cottage than we expected to which was a real pleasure with the cosy log fire. On the one nice day we could appreciate the lovely views out to the mountains and enjoy watching the birds at the bird-table. Would love to come back when the weather is good to enjoy all the local walks and to sit out on the patio and enjoy the view. I have no hesitation in recommending this cottage , Esther was very prompt and helpful with any enquiries. Getting access and checking out was very easy and convenient.
