About the Owner

My wife and I live in Somerset. We met in Cornwall and have always spent time in Cornwall each year. We love the coastline and granite landscapes inland. The climate, the scenery and culture make the county a very distinctive place for holidays. We are both retired schoolteachers and appreciate just how rewarding seaside holidays can be for families, giving them time to relax together in a special place.

We spend time with our own extended family at Rockford each year and the beach, Bude and the surrounding area are very special for all of us. We hope that visitors will enjoy the area and the house as much as we do!

Ideal property close to beach

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for the wonderful time we had at Rockford. The house was really lovely, so well equipped and spacious. We loved the large kitchen/dining-room and the beds were extremely comfortable. The outdoor shower was much appreciated as we were in the sea every day. We really enjoyed our week at Widemouth Bay and didn't want to leave! Many thanks and I hope we will be able to come to Rockford again.

Rockford: A great holiday property

  • 5 of 5

I cannot recommend this house strongly enough. It has everything you need as a family: decent garden, good kitchen (with plenty of dishes/saucepans/glasses etc), bbq, and sufficient bathrooms. We've stayed in holiday houses where we've all been on top of each other, but there is plenty of space for everyone here with a spacious kitchen opening out to the garden and the good sized sitting-room set apart from the kitchen (which my husband appreciated to get some quiet). The owners and property manager were available to answer all our questions. You are also within walking distance of the fantastic Widemouth Bay as well as a really good pub and a fantastic tea shop for the obligatory cream tea, which means you are not constantly packing up the car with gear in the morning and filling it with sand in the afternoon. Bude is a short distance away for a more varied day out and to do a major shop (there is a Morrisons, a Co-op and a Sainsburys) or pick something up at the chemist. For a dog-friendly, child-friendly beach holiday you can't beat it.

Owner's Response: The kitchen-diner frequently attracts favourable comments especially as it links easily to the rear patio. People like the sitting area at the end of the kitchen-diner with its own TV and views across fields through the picture window. The property has appeal for all age groups with everything on one level inside.

Great House

  • 5 of 5

We wanted somewhere close to the beach and also somewhere the dogs were allowed and Rockford lived up to this. The house is very spacious and has everything you need and more. The garden was very secure and had a lovely aspect. The large kitchen was brilliant. The house is set back away from the main road with just a short walk to Widemouth Bay. The Bay View Inn is within walking distance and would also recommend the Elements Italian Restaurant who provide a delivery service. We were lucky with the weather during our stay at Rockford and would definitely visit again.

Location

From the Owner

My wife and I spent our childhood and teenage holidays in Cornwall and grew to love the north coast and its beaches and cliff scenery. The Bude area is very accessible from our home in Somerset and also very unspoiled with quiet rolling countryside as well as the superb coastline. When the opportunity arose to buy a bungalow in a quiet road 5 minutes from Widemouth beach we had no hesitation! Since then we have significantly modernised the bungalow increasing the number of bedrooms from 2 to 4 and building a vaulted kitchen-diner. The property is conveniently located only 2 miles south of Bude with its many shops and supermarket plus its own distinctive small town character, still largely unspoiled by the influx of summer tourists.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Bristol at 125 Miles Nearest Barpub : Bay View Inn at 0.5 Miles Nearest Ferry : Plymouth at 50 Miles Nearest Golf : Bude at 2.5 Miles Nearest Train : Exeter at 60 Miles Nearest Motorway : A39 at 1000 Metres Nearest Restaurant : Widemouth Manor at 1 Miles Nearest Beach : Widemouth Bay at 500 Metres Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

Widemouth Bay beach is a 5 minute walk from the property. The beach is 2 kms wide and sandy with low cliffs and rocky areas to the north and south. Surfing is very popular at this beach with some competitions from time to time. The beach is controlled by a team of RNLI life guards throughout the summer and also for the Easter period and for the weekends up to and including the half term week in the autumn. There is a large car park at the beach with a cliff-top café.

Travel:

Use of a car is recommended. There is a bus service in the summer giving access to Bude and Boscastle but this is not very frequent. The nearest airport is at Bristol (120 miles) with a smaller airport at Exeter (46 miles). Continental ferries dock at Plymouth (36 miles) with sailings from France and Spain. A car is valuable for visiting other attractions in Cornwall such as Tintagel, Padstow and the Eden Project.

Distances:

Bude is 2.5 miles to the north. (For shops, cafés, restaurants, golf etc)

Boscastle is 12 miles to the south. (Picturesque coastal village and harbour)

Tintagel is 14 miles to the south. (Famous King Arthur's castle on island)

Clovelly is 17 miles to the north. (Old coastal village and harbour)

The Eden Project is 35 miles to the south. (For aspects of global conservation)

Plymouth is 36 miles to the south-east. (Naval history)

Newquay is 43 miles to the south. (Famous resort)

Further Details:

The old canal inland from Bude has been restored and turned into a very attractive area with cafés along the quayside, a nature reserve and a lovely walk along the old tow path inland for about 2 miles where there is a modern restaurant (The Weir) built in the last 2 years with a fishing lake and wildlife interactive display.

At Widemouth Bay the Bay View Inn is very popular as a local pub offering an attractive range of meals.

A new restaurant "Elements" lies on the Cliff top between Widemouth Bay and Bude and provides a very attractive menu (especially Italian) for eating out as does the Widemouth Manor only about a mile away.

Bude provides adventure training facilities (very popular with younger age groups) in surfing, canoeing, kayaking and coasteering and courses are run throughout the March to October period. In addition Bude has a Leisure Centre and indoor swimming pool.

As well as the coastal footpath there are many other pleasant walks available including a link across local fields to the canal and Weir café. To the south, 16 miles away, is the head of the Camel estuary cycleway which terminates in Padstow and passes through Wadebridge where cycle hire can be arranged.

Bude has banks, chemists and many tourist shops and cafes. Morrisons have a large supermarket there and Sainsbury also have a supermarket. Doctors and dentists are available and there is a minor injuries hospital at nearby Stratton just across the A39.

Facilities

From the Owner

The bungalow is a wonderful place for a holiday with our extended family. Apart from surfing, rock-pooling and beach games the area offers walking, adventure sports, visits to National Trust and English Heritage sites and there are many attractive restaurants and cafes for eating out. The property is a superb place for a family to relax and escape from the frenetic pace of normal working life and offers good facilities in good or poor weather. The rear garden is a favourite place especially on windy days. Rockford is very convenient for children with its external patio shower for the removal of Widemouth sand and the safe, secure garden. Elderly folk find it suitable as its all on one floor providing easy access. It possesses all the usual domestic services and plenty of parking space.
