Overview

About the property

Cottage in Eskdale Green, Eskdale (near Wasdale), Lake District, Cumbria - Quiet Location. Large Garden. Views To Fells. Dog Friendly. Short Walk To Local Shop & Pubs

Rockwood is in an ideal location to explore the stunning scenery, natural environment and visitor attractions of the Western Lake District. There are many activities to enjoy, including gentle country rambles along the rivers Esk, Mite and Duddon to some of the most challenging mountain walking, fell-running, mountain-biking and road cycling in England. There are numerous places to visit, such as the Roman fort at Hard Knott (upper Eskdale), Muncaster Castle and Wordsworth’s birth place, Cockermouth. The Cumbrian coast has a rich and fascinating industrial heritage and the towns of Whitehaven, Barrow-in-Furness and Maryport have much to offer the visitor. The famous narrow gauge Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (“La’al Ratty”) can be seen from Rockwood as it passes through Irton Road station on its way from Ravenglass on the coast to Dalegarth (Boot) in Eskdale. Eskdale retains strong roots in hill farming which allows the visitor a glimpse of authentic Cumbrian (Cumberland) life.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Much of Rockwood’s charm arises from its site - an elevated position on a hillside providing views across fells and fields and a quiet location set well back from, and above, the road through Eskdale Green. A short, smooth but fairly steep gravel path leads up to the house from a parking area at the front gate. There is off-road parking for one large vehicle (eg estate car or 4x4) near the gate with additional parking in the village (400 yards along the lane). Young children will require supervision in the garden because of the relatively steep terrain, stone steps and rocks (the house and gardens are located on a hillside). Outside: Rockwood is set in approximately an acre of terraced gardens on a steep hillside planted with an abundance of shrubs and herbaceous plants. Paths wind through the garden leading to seating areas with views over the surrounding fells and countryside. There are two benches on a stone patio area at the front door plus a further bench in the upper garden from which it is possible to see, on a clear evening, the sun set behind the Isle of Man. Red squirrels, hedgehogs and a fox have been spotted in the garden (as well as, of course, the handsome local Herdwick sheep). Utility Room: Automatic washing machine, iron/ironing board, dehumidifier, drying racks, WC and wash hand basin. Plenty of space to dry clothes, boots, dogs, children etc in the unlikely event of rain. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed linen and towels provided. House cleaned thoroughly prior to occupation. Multi-week occupancy: bed linen and towels changed and house cleaned (if required) at end of first week. Other: Dining room: light and airy with seating for six people around a large table. A large south-facing window provides plenty of light. There is a collection of board games and toys. There is a high-chair for small children.

Idyllic setting, homely house, great holiday

  • 5 of 5

We have had the most wonderful week at Rockwood. It is a real home from home with bright well proportioned rooms and everything you could need. Comfy beds too! Worked perfectly for our family of 4 and dog but easily takes 7 as well. Garden is a real treat in the summer and it's lovely to look out onto the narrow guage railway from the house. Wonderful spot with lovely walks from the house and pubs and a village shop in walking distance. Owners were very helpful. Walked over from the house over Muncaster Fell to Ravenglass and back on narow guage railway, walked from house to Dalegarth Station, swam in St Catherine's pools, went to the beach at Drigg, climbed Scarfell Pike, swam at Blea Tarn - amazing weather and made the most of it. Enjoy the pies from Gillian's bakery in Gosforth and amazing apple crumble ice cream from the shop in Boot. We will definitely be back - I'd move in if I could!!

wonderful

The setting was perfect. The house was delightful and had everything we needed. The children ( and us) adored the little railway, and waving to the passengers.

Peaceful, beautiful...what more could you want?

Location

Special interest holidays:

Members of the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Preservation Society are able to work as volunteers on the railway. Contact the Preservation Society for further details. The railway is easily accessible from Rockwood.

Coast/Beach:

It is only a short drive from Eskdale Green to the coast which contains different types of coastal scenery and wildlife habitats in a relatively small area. These include huge dune fields at Drigg (a nature reserve); long stretches of sandy beach at St Bees and Silecroft (Millom); towering sea cliffs at St Bees Head; and vast sand flats around the Solway Firth (great for kite surfing).

Travel:

Rockwood can be reached in less than an hour from the M6. For those approaching from the south this can include a beautiful drive over Birker Fell from the Duddon Valley. Although most visitors arrive at Rockwood by car, some have arrived by train. This involves taking the Cumbrian coast line from either Lancaster (to the south) or Carlisle (north) to Ravenglass, transferring to "La'al Ratty" (the local narrow gauge railway) to Irton Road and walking the final 100 yards to Rockwood.

Distances:

Distances from Rockwood to food and drink:

- local shop (Eskdale Stores): 500 yards

- pub (Bower House): 600 yards

- pub (King George IV): 1 mile

- small supermarket (Gosfoth): 5 miles

- bakery (Gosforth): 5 miles

- large supermarket (Egremont): 12 miles

Distances from Rockwood to visitor attractions:

- Irton Road station ("La'al Ratty"): 100 yards

- Eskdale Water Mill: 3 miles

- Wastwater (Wasdale): 4 miles

- Hardknott Roman Fort: 5 miles

- Muncaster Castle: 6 miles
