Dog friendly, Barley Cottage snuggles where the Dramatic Lake District National Park and the rolling Yorkshire Dales meet the Trough of Bowland, making it the ideal base for a touring/walking holiday, Our delightful 2 bedroomed, centrally heated cottage nestles in a private courtyard in a charming village. The white bathroom has shower over bath. The light sitting room has French window opening onto a small but beautiful, enclosed, south-facing garden which overlooks private parkland. There is a fully fitted dining kitchen and a private parking space at the front door for one family car, with visitor parking nearby. The village of Whittington, in the Lune Valley, is recorded in the Doomsday Book. It is surrounded by glorious, unspoilt countryside.

Delightful cottage

When we arrived at the cottage we were overwhelmed with not just the cottage but also the beautiful views from the back garden. The cottage was spotless and you had everything that you could possibly need. There is also plenty of walks around Whittington our little dog loved the walk behind the cottage. It is ideally located for both the Lake District and North Yorkshire. We will definately be going again next year.

Picture perfect country cottage!

Gorgeous little holiday cottage set in a picturesque village. Exceptionally well equipped with everything you could need plus lots of extras like super fast broadband, DVDs, a massage machine, books & games. Very clean. Amazing farmland views from the back patio, so tranquil! Excellent local walks and a stunning area to explore. Will return!

This is a delightful cottage: clean, comfortable and tastefully refurbished with beautiful country views from the back and having everything we needed for our stay. The pretty garden offered a tranquil setting in which to enjoy the sun and it was safe and enclosed for our dog. The wealth of local information that was provided came in very useful. Our dog enjoyed the walks from the cottage, particularly the grass run behind and the river walks. Kirkby Lonsdale is an excellent base from which to visit Yorkshire, the Lakes and Morecambe Bay. We will be recommending this cottage to family and friends and hope to visit again in the near future.

Lovely little cottage with everything you could need. Enjoyed the walk along the river and the bus back with our dog was very easy.

Would definately stay again. The only sad thing was the pub which is 100m away was closed.

peace & tranquility

Barley Cottage is a little gem. The rooms are spacious, airy and very tastefully furnished. It is equipped with everything that you are likely to need and the level of cleanliness is superb. The owner, Joanna, is very friendly and easy to deal with. The views from the rear of the cottage are wonderful and it's so quiet I could hear owls in the trees. You really need a car to get about as there are no shops in the immediate vicinity, but it's only a couple of miles up the road. We can recommend the chip shop and the snooty fox in Kirkby Lonsdale. Most places are dog friendly and the people are very nice and helpful. We had trips out to Kendal and Skipton markets, which aren't too far away. There are plenty of nice walks, especially if you have a dog, and places with stunning scenery, like the river Lune right from the cottage door. We had a lovely relaxing week and we would have liked to have stayed a bit longer. If you want peace and quiet and some time out of the rat-race, we couldn't recommend it enough. You would not be disappointed.

Situated where the dramatic Lake District meets the rolling Yorkshire Dales, the historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale makes the ideal base for a touring holiday. Walk from the cottage along the river Lune to the nearby Devil's Bridge, which is a hub of activity all year round with free parking, picnic area, riverside pathway into town and excellent catering facilities. Here people enjoy taking a plunge, kayaking the rapids or trawling for tiddlers. Kirkby Lonsdale boasts amazing historic architecture and a fascinating, eclectic collection of shops, cafes and restaurants. Great opportunites abound for golfing, cycling, fishing and horse-riding, while Morecambe Bay, Hutton Roof nature reserve, and great shopping are within easy reach. A good bus service offers access.

Special interest holidays:

We welcome up to two, well trained, adult dogs and provide dog towels, water bowl and mat for our canine friends. We also provide laminated directions to local walks for their owners!

Coast/Beach:

For a day at the coast visit nearby Silverdale, Arnside, or Morecambe; all between 20 – 30 minutes’ drive.

Travel:

A car is recommended although there is a good bus service locally. The nearest airports are Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, all around an hour’s drive away. There is a 10 minute drive from the M6 motorway. The nearest railway station is five miles away at Carnforth.

Distances:

The town of Kirkby Lonsdale is just two miles.

Hutton Roof nature reserve is two miles.

The Yorkshire Dales is a mere 20 minute drive.

Windermere and the Dramatic Lake District, with its host of attractions, is only 30 minutes' drive.

For shopping, there is a Booth’s nearby and the Lake District town of Kendal is a twenty minute drive.

Just two miles walk along the River Lune takes you to Kirkby Lonsdale, a smart, historic market town. If you prefer not to walk or drive, there is a regular bus service. You will be delighted by the unique shops, cafes, restaurants, cobbled courtyards, Norman church and Georgian architecture. Here you can enjoy fine dining or a chip supper. Wander to the famous ‘Ruskin’s View’. Don't miss the ever popular, 14th Century, ‘Devil’s Bridge’ where tourists flock to take a plunge in the Lune. Enjoy a picnic in the park (free parking).

Two miles in another direction takes you to 'Hutton Roof Crags, Nature Reserve', with its unique limetone pavement. Or for the young at heart visit nearby 'Docker Park Farm'.

The Yorkshire Dales is a mere 20 minute drive. Explore 'Ingleton Caves', or travel the famous 'Settle to Carlisle Railway'. For peace and quiet, visit the 'Howgills' - one of the forgotten walking areas of England,

Windermere and the Dramatic Lake District, with its host of attractions, is only 30 minutes ‘drive away.

With magnificent country views across private parkland to the rear, and tucked away in a private courtyard with allocated parking directly out front; Barley Cottage is a haven of peace with free Wi fi and a 'dogs welcome' policy for up to two well-trained, mature dogs (18 months+). The light sitting room opens onto a private, enclosed and South facing garden with bright flowerbeds, garden furniture and barbecue. A delightful riverside walk from the doorstep leads into Kirkby Lonsdale. The cottage is tastefully furnished with a comprehensively equipped kitchen and white-suite bathroom along with a modern central heating system and cosy living flame gas fire provide all the home comforts you could wish for. Please note that we cannot accept dogs that would jump a 3.5ft wall, as there is often livestock in the adjoining meadow.

There is ample wardrobe and drawer space. There are spare blankets, a hair dryer and alarm clock available. Outside: The enclosed, south-facing garden has colourful flowerbeds, patio with furniture, barbecue, retractable wash line and best of all, beautiful views over private parkland. Utility Room: There is an enclosed porch, convenient for storing golf clubs, baby buggies and walking boots. Cleaning / Towels / Linens: The cottage is cleaned throughout ready for your arrival. Bed linens, towels, (one bath and one hand towel per person), 2016 - 2 bathrobes, tea towel & dish cloths are provided. Paper product & basic soaps provided.
