Stunning and very well equipped holiday cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful relaxing week in this very well appointed and equipped gite. Firstly we were met and warmly welcomed by the very friendly and helpful French family who look after the property for John and Lisa. Secondly, the gite has an amazing view from the huge living room / kitchen - looking straight onto the local hills, It also has a superb shower and the best teapot we have used in a rented cottage! And thirdly, the location is ideal - in the beautiful Valee d'Oeill and close the magnificent walking in the cirques south of Bagnere de Luchon. I would highly recommend this gite as the perfect base for Luchon and the central part of the Pyrenees.

Fantastic property!

  • 5 of 5

We were warmly welcomed by John and Lisa, who throughout our week could not do enough for us. The property is finished to a clean and high quality standard with enough space for our 7 adults to be able to relax in comfort and no over-crowding.

The location is superb - we were able to toboggan from the back door, walk to a nearby village restaurant, hike up into the hills and a short drive down to Luchon and the ski-resort as well.

Transfer time from Toulouse airport was about 1:45 hours and simple with a sat nav. If you're going in winter make sure you have winter tyres or snow chains

Our only suggestions for improvement would be some curtains in the upstairs room to help anyone sleeping there not awake with the dawn!

Gîte vraiment agréable et très bien équipé

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Location

From the Owner

We were looking for an area in which there was plenty to do in both the Summer and Winter seasons and allow our children to have the sort of childhood we all dream of. We fell in love with this very special valley straight away and have never looked back. We hope all our guests can share a little bit of that dream too.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The gite is in the mountains so not near to any beaches but both atlantic and mediterranean coasts are within 3 hours drive. There are plenty of local stunning mountain lakes as well as the nearby lac de Génos-Loudenvielle which offers various water activities, a small water park and a thermal spa.

Travel:

Nearest airports are Toulouse and Pau (both (1 hour 50 mins), Tarbes/Lourdes (1 hour 30 mins) and Carcassonne (2 hours 30 mins). Use of a car is required.

Distances:

The medieval walled town of St Bertrand de Comminges with its famous cathedral is 30 mins drive away. The Hospice de France refuge (30 mins) and the stunning Oo valley (20 mins) both offer you many beautiful walks or somewhere to just relax over a drink or a meal and take in the views. Both have small rivers suitable for children and dogs to splash in.

Further Details:

The gite is situated in a small village in the protected Oueil valley which boasts a number of picturesque villages many with Romanesque churches. Footpaths link the villages and for the more adventurous there is a two day tour of the whole valley.

If you like cycling, 4 major Tour de France climbs - the Port de Bales, Peyresourde, Superbagnères and Col de Portillon are all accessible from the gite and there are numerous mountain and forest trails available for the mountain bike enthusiast. You can also take your bike up to the top of Superbagnères on the lift and enjoy family or black-runs down the 1200m descent back into town.

The region provides endless opportunities for more or less serious walking with plenty of manned refuges for overnight stays. The highest peak in the Pyrenées Mt Aneto is just an hour away over the border in Spain. Walking with donkeys is an excellent activity if you have children or heavy luggage and they can be hired from our neighbour.

If you want to take things easier both Luchon and Loudenvielle offer spa facilities and swimming pools. The region boasts a number of excellent country restaurants and after 45 minute’s drive you can be in Catalonia experiencing tapas.

For those looking for more adventure, white water rafting, canyoning, paragliding, arapaho, rock climbing and via ferrata are all locally available and in winter as well as alpine skiing, there is cross country skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledging – just ask if you would like us to organise it for you.

There are 3 supermarkets in Luchon as well as a traditional market (Wed/Sat in winter and everyday in summer) The town has plenty of bars and restaurants as well as several boulangeries, banks, pharmacies, and a post office. Ski hire can be done in the town itself or at any of the resorts.

Facilities

From the Owner

The property is located in a small mountain village and backs onto wide open space. You can really relax and take in the mountain air and views or indulge your passion for walking, mountain biking or road biking (you can climb the Porte de Balés featured in the famous Tour de France) from your doorstep. When you need a bit more life, the Spa town of Bagnères de Luchon is only 15 mins drive away where there are plenty of bars, restaurants and shops to entertain you. Alternatively popping to Spain for lunch is only 34 mins drive away. Close proximity to the ski resorts of Superbagnères, Peyragudes and Bourg d'Oueil is a major plus and the famous Spanish ski resort of Baqueira is just over an hour away.
