Cosy, Traditional Farm Cottage Set High In The Hills Of Powys

Bedrooms 3
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 4 - 5 nights

About the property

Cottage in Abermule, Newtown, Powys, Wales - Remote, Rural Retreat With Exhilarating Views, Ideal For Walkers And Those Wanting Peace And Quiet

This oak-framed 16th Century hilltop farmhouse, set in the midst of farm land, offers unrivalled panoramic views across the rolling hills of Powys. Perfect for a peaceful, rural getaway, the cottage couldn't be more secluded. The only neighbours here are the farm animals, sheep, lambs and some cattle who are tended to by the local farmer. The house and land is very dog friendly, as long as the dogs are sheep friendly! There are bridle paths across the land and dogs should be kept on leads while on the farm. This is wonderful walking country.. Its a 2 mile ramble to the local village and pub, and is close to the charming town of Montgomery, as well as Powys Castle, and Offas Dyke. Further afield are the peaks and valleys of Snowdonia, Plynlimon and the coast which can be easily explored by car. Being so central, it makes an ideal base to visit much of Wales, from the Brecon Beacons to Caernarfon Castle.

About Jenny

We are two sisters whose family originate from this part of the world. We holidayed here as children with our grandparents and now our grandchildren are enjoying all that this very special place has to offer.

Driving up the track to "Penc" you feel on top of the world, literally.

We have many visitors who return year after year and we hope that you too will have a lovely time.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“We had a really memorable time, the cottage was wonderful, even better than the photos and description suggested. The weather was lovely and we enjoyed hills, waterfalls, lakes, peace and quiet.” - AUG‘13

"We all agreed that the cottage was a terrific place, the views, the birds, the rabbits – and the wonderful cottage itself: the fire place (it was cold and we used it both evenings), the remarkably comfy chairs, the WiFi (great service!) and the whole feel of the cottage." - JUNE ‘13

"We had a fantastic week, the positioning and surroundings were just spectacular. We packed in quite a lot during our week. We hired a canal boat for a day down from Abergavenny, wobbled our way through Go Ape at Coed-y-Brenin, painting china in Stoke and walked to the Lion at Berriew for Sunday lunch. We had a lovely time in Ludlow and Powis Castle and finished off climbing Snowdon. Tim and I had some lovely runs across the top and it was just lovely being up there soaking in the views." – JUNE‘13

Notes on accommodation: The house itself is reached via a steep farm track which can be icy in the winter. It is cosy, traditionally furnished, and of half-timbered wood construction. This is not five star luxury, but simple country comfort. Water is supplied from its own well, and rather than central heating there is a log burning stove to warm up the evenings. For people who enjoy the simple things in life, and love peace, quiet and nature, it's an absolute treat. Outside: There is a small patio on the southerly aspect with garden furniture available in adjacent former pigsty. There is plenty of parking in a gated grassed yard. There is a large old barn across the yard, part used for storage of wood/coal for the cottage and part used occasionally by the farmer. The farm land is good for walking with dogs (on leads please when there are sheep nearby). Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The cottage will be cleaned before you arrive. 2 Tea towels provided. Bed linen can be supplied for a small charge, or you may bring your own. Please bring your own towels. Other: Spacious entrance hall, ideal for storing coats, wellies, fishing rods, kites etc. and wet dogs.

Penc idyll.

  • 5 of 5

Great week's holiday. Beautiful part of Wales and the panoramic views from Penc are the best in Powys.

The cottage is the perfect place to get away from the bustle of modern life and recharge your batteries.

Seeing how the surrounding grazing land is being managed was also fascinating.

Quite a unique and wonderful place.

Lovely, quaint property and peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

We love Pencaenion, having stayed here 10 times over the years. It's far enough away from the road for no noise or disruption but still close to towns for supermarkets and restaurants. The views are incredible and it's just idyllic. The property is comfortably furnished and lovely and clean. I don't have anything negative to say about it!

It was just what we dreamed it would be. Beautiful and totally unspoilt. We had marvelous weather, which maybe unusual and the property had everything needed in it.

Perfect Welsh retreat in the hills

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful stay in this exceptional house which feels like it is on top of the world, overlooking the mountains of Wales from every side. The setting is stunningly beautiful with superb walking all around-it's wild, unspoilt countryside-our kids loved it and so did our dog! A wood fire and listening to the owls call at night made our whole stay perfect-we can't wait to go back.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for a wonderful review. I couldn't ask for more. It's always a bit worrying letting it at that time of the year. Look forward to seeing you again. Jenny

A Peaceful Cottage with wonderful views

  • 5 of 5

Pencaenion has the most wonderful position, perched on the top of a hill with amazing views over the mid-Wales countryside.

If you want to escape from a busy life this is the place to stay.

There are plenty of good walks from the cottage and lots of interesting places to visit a short drive away.

We definitely hope to return.
