About the Owner

In the run-up to Christmas 2011, my husband Chris and I were discussing a vague plan for his retirement in a few years' time; we were looking at a 3-4 year window and decided to downsize eventually from our lovely home in Cheshire and move to the Cotswolds (which we had always loved). A second home would need an income, so we had to find a successful holiday let. As soon as we set foot in Lilac Cottage we knew it was perfect. It had been beautifully restored a decade earlier but then Morven built it up into a thriving holiday let with many guests returning year after year & thankfully, Jenny the housekeeper stayed on. We have made some improvements to decor and equipment and we stay there ourselves, but not often enough because it's so popular! We know you will enjoy Lilac Cottage.

Thanks again for our stay in Lilac Cottage. It must be our eighth stay here; we never tire of it. Cosy, comfortable and welcoming. Once again, many thanks. Theresa.

This is a comfortable and well-equipped cottage. On rainy, cold days the lighted fireplace warmed the atmosphere of the room. Enjoyed harvesting fresh herbs from the patio to use in cooking. From the cottage you can easily walk to the Square ... Mr & Mrs J Caldwell, USA.

We would like to thank you for the wonderful time we had at Lilac Cottage. The cottage is beautiful, very charming and cosy; it is very well equipped, very clean. We felt at home. We will recommend it. Thank you. M. Leroy, France.

A stunning place to stay - just like home.

Our eleven day stay at Lilac Cottage in Stow-on-the-Wold was one of the highlights of a two month visit to the UK in 2014. We had visited Stow before but this visit gave us the perfect base to explore the region at leisure and really get to know the area. We thoroughly enjoyed the property and appreciated the high standard of facilities that Lilac Cottage offered. Located in a quiet street a few minutes walk from town, the cottage was the perfect place to stay for day trips in and around the Cotswold's with a few extended trips to Windsor and Bath. The cottage itself was fantastic and gave us the opportunity to stay in this first class property with loads of atmosphere and old world charm combined with modern facilities. I would highly recommend Lilac Cottage to anyone wanting to stay in the Stow area and commend the owners on their high standards. We would stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely comments on Lilac Cottage. As the owners, we strive to maintain high standards and are continually looking to make improvements where appropriate. I must mention our Housekeeper who works very hard to ensure the cottage is welcoming for the next guests so I will make sure she sees your review. We're pleased you were so comfortable at Lilac Cottage as a good base is the foundation of an enjoyable stay and we're pleased you were able to enjoy, not only the immediate area, but also further afield. We hope the Cotswolds will remain a favourite for you - as it is for us. We look forward to welcoming you on a return visit in the future. Dianne

Charming Property

  • 5 of 5

5 ladies stayed at this charming property for a joint birthday weekend in April. The property is larger than it seems from the photographs and has a lovely character.

We fit in comfortably, the property provided everything that we needed and it was closer to the centre of Stow than we expected - meaning that a bite to eat, a drop to drink or a shop to explore was within easy reach.

We had a lovely time and fully recommend this accomodation to anyone wishing to explore Stow on the Wold and surrounding countryside.

Lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was an excellent place to stay. Beautifully presented in a wonderful position. The booking process and communication with the owner was great. The cottage looks exactly like the website. Everything a family could want. Adults and children (14 and 10) loved being there.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind and very positive comments on Lilac Cottage. Feedback is valuable, good or bad - if good, it's reassuring that we are living up to guest expectations and if bad, we know where we can improve. Thank you also for the recommendations - it's very useful to prospective visitors when choosing a property to read objective comments from previous guests. We're very glad you enjoyed your visit and look forward to welcoming you again.

Location

From the Owner

We had visited the Cotswolds several times in the past and loved the area. Early in 2012 we visited again, this time looking for a suitable location and holiday-let property and very quickly concluded that Stow-on-the-Wold was perfect - accessible to so many daytime activities, but big enough for visitors to keep themselves entertained in the evenings, with all the shops, pubs and restaurants in the town. Stow's focus around its market square makes it better suited for short breaks than the more linear (but still beautiful!) towns such as Broadway, Burford, Bourton, Moreton and Chipping Campden. Stow is quiet without feeling remote and is the perfect base for visiting so many towns, villages, country houses, gardens, the opera and the races.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

Travel:

80 minutes by train from London Paddington station into Kingham station (5 miles from Stow) or 90 minutes to Moreton-in-Marsh station (4.1/2 miles from Stow). Approx 90 minutes from London Heathrow Airport by car. Approx 1 hour from Birmingham Airport.

As well as rail links, Stow has a good bus service to nearby towns and villages.

Stow is only 20 minutes by car from Shakespeare's Stratford, 25 mins from the elegant Regency Spa town of Cheltenham, 30 mins from Oxford and 1 hr from Bath.

Distances:

3 miles to Lower Slaughter.

4 miles to Bourton-on-the-Water.

9.1/2 miles to Snowshill (inc. Manor).

9 miles to Chipping Norton.

10 miles to Burford and Chipping Campden.

9 miles to Broadway Tower (11.1/2 to Broadway centre).

6 miles to Batsford Arboretum.

13 miles to Chedworth Roman Villa.

14.1/2 miles to Hidcote Manor

20 miles to Cheltenham Racecourse

Further Details:

Stow-on-the-Wold is wonderfully different from other local towns in that it is built around a Market Square which boasts an ancient cross, 15th Century parish church, fascinating old buildings, the original town stocks and alleyways to explore. Just out of the centre is said to be the oldest Inn in England.

For eating out, Stow offers a broad range, from informal tea shops, brasseries, bistros, through to excellent restaurants - not forgetting delicious food in relaxed pub surroundings.

Stow boasts an exciting array of antique and gift shops, clothes and shoe shops, bakery, butcher, organic shop, delicatessens, small late shop, a TARDIS-like cook shop, electrical supplies shop, wine merchant, pharmacy, 24-hour supermarket and my personal favourite, the Chocolate Shop, where you can see the chocolates being made!

A short stroll along Well Lane will lead you to the Roman Well - small but well worth a visit for history lovers.
