Overview

Property

Updated: 09-Apr-2016
Gite/Cottage in La Vicomte sur Rance, Dinan, Saint Malo, Brittany, France - Peaceful hamlet, 5-10 minutes stroll to the River Rance, 10 minutes drive to Dinan

Our cosy 200 year old house is situated in a peaceful hamlet just five minutes' walk from the local village and (max) ten minutes’ walk through deciduous woods to the beautiful River Rance. Ten minutes' drive from the walled medieval town of Dinan. Half an hour from St Malo, Dinard, and the northern Brittany coast.

Downstairs: spacicious living space that combines the old and the new, with a completely modern kitchen with all mod cons complementing the wooden parquet floor, ancient wooden beamed ceiling and winding wooden staircase to the upstairs landing. A wide selection of dvds for all tastes and ages, games, puzzles and books. French satellite tv (with a few english speaking news channels - CNN, BBC World News, etc). Fast WIFI access throughout the property.

Upstairs: Two bedrooms and a bathroom lead off the cosy mezzanine landing, where there is a little desk and a small sofa-cum-bed for those wishing for a quiet space to read or take a well earned siesta! One double bedroom, one twin bedroom. Bathroom has a shower, toilet, hand basin and washing machine. Beamed ceilings throughout.

Garden: A gravelled terrace with a benched dining table, manually wound awning and large Weber BBQ. Grassy garden area, with four sun loungers available for relaxing and sunbathing on those afternoons off from sightseeing!

"We loved this place & property"

We stayed here for two weeks in June (family party of 5, youngest was 20 yrs). We have stayed in many properties in France, and this was on par with the best. The house is full of character among an old hamlet of houses of similar character - a real 200 yr old environment. The kitchen & fittings are completely modern, the living area stylish and all sits very well with the "old" character of the building. The upstairs retains the old world feel with much timber on show. And, very important (and not always found) - everything works perfectly, all plumbing, electrics, machines, etc. Feels more like the owners own house rather than a holiday home There is a cycle path closeby, along an old railway line as far as Dinard (50km round trip - but absolutely flat & no traffic). A lovely old village house in Brittany

  • 5 of 5

The gite is an authentic old stone built house in the old village of Vicomte, but with all modern comforts. The River Rance is a short walk down through a tree lined path, and the village itself is interesting, with surrunding impressive ex merchants' houses. I understand that it was formerly a trading community, using the river, as well as being a cider producing centre. The village still has remnants of an old cider press, and the covered clothes washing area near an ancient spring. The nearby newer part of the village has a baker where you can buy fresh bread daily. The house itself has a practical downstairs living area with newly fitted out kitchen and comfortable sitting area with an HD TV. The two bedrooms are cosy, one being small but big enough for two adults or children in seperate beds, the other a spacious double bedded room.

The surrounding area provides plenty of interest, with the medieval hilltop town of Dinan a short drive away, and more locally, an interesting old tidal mill, restored by the locals. Vicomte is less than 30 minutes drive from Dinard airport.

We loved this place & property

We stayed here for two weeks in June (family party of 5, youngest was 20 yrs). We have stayed in many properties in France, and this was on par with the best. The house is full of character among an old hamlet of houses of similar character - a real 200 yr old environment. The kitchen & fittings are completely modern, the living area stylish and all sits very well with the "old" character of the building. The upstairs retains the old world feel with much timber on show. And, very important (and not always found) - everything works perfectly, all plumbing, electrics, machines, etc. Feels more like the owners own house rather than a holiday home - it even has an induction hob!

Within walking distance of a village cafe/boulangerie/local shop and a bar/restaurant. Some more restaurants (longer walk - or very short drive) about 1 km away in Port Lyvet.

We like to run and cycle and there were plenty of places to do it - path straight from house to river and along rough ground to Port Lyvet and back via the road to the house - was great for running (or walking), as was the old tow path from Port Lyvet to Dinan (about 5km long) , both good for running or cycling. There is also a cycle path closeby, along an old railway line as far as Dinard - 25km long (50km round trip - but absolutely flat & no traffic).

What we like/recommend : Running & Cycle Paths; the peace & quiet of the old village; the charm of the old buildings; the boulangerie/patisserie in Ploudihen (about 5 mins drive, but worth it); the "character" of the house; the "everything worked" of the house; the kitchen equipment & fittings; the very helpful owner (ask any question before you go); the cycle along the tow path to Dinan; Fabulous & interesting immediate area and a great base for exploring that part of Brittany (Dinan, Dol, St. Malo, Le Mont Saint-Michel, Combourg, etc)

Why we only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 : For 5 adults (our kids are adults) the living area couch was a bit cramped; the walls upstairs are very thin (single layer of timber) - didn't bother us but might upset some.

Tips :

1. Bring or hire bikes (hire in Dinan) and cycle to Dinan Port along the tow path for breakfast or lunch on a regular basis.

2. No evidence of a lively night life (we didn't look for it) but if your party is keen on night life you might need to look elsewhere.

Location

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

30 minutes drive from many beautiful, sandy beaches, including the town beaches of Saint-Malo, Dinard and the charming fishing village/seaside resort of Saint-Briac-sur-Mer. Five minutes drive from the house is the pretty riverside port of Mordreuc which has a small sandy beach and a good river-side restaurant/bar. Mordreuc’s famous attraction is a large female seal which is often to be seen lounging on the beach or on the jetty.

Travel:

Saint-Malo (Brittany Ferries and Condor) - 25kms; Dinard-Plurtuit (Ryan Air) - 18kms.

SNCF to Saint-Malo. Local trains to Dinan (8kms) and Dol-de-Bretagne (22kms).

The use of a car is pretty much essential, although there is a good bus service that connects the village with Dinan and Saint-Malo (especially useful during the busy summer season, when it can be difficult to find parking spaces in the centre of both towns).

Distances:

The village of La Vicomte-sur-Rance is just five minutes walk from our house (which is situated in the pretty, historic hamlet of La Vieille Vicomte). 7.5kms drive to the walled medieval town of Dinan. 30 minutes drive to Saint-Malo, Dinard and Cancale; 40 minutes drive to UNESCO World Heritage Site Mont Saint-Michel. 45 minutes drive to Rennes. A little further afield, around an hour's drive, is the beautiful fishing port of Erquy, famous for its' scallops, and Cap Frehel and Fort La Latte. Cobac Park and Waterpark, a great day out for all the family - 16kms.

Further Details:

Just five minutes walk away in the village of La Vicomte-sur-Rance there is a bar-tabac-restaurant run by a very friendly young couple (midday weekday meals only). There is a play park for younger children in the grounds of the Mairie. Port Lyvet is just five minutes' drive away, or half an hours’ walk along the river, where there is a marina and two restaurant/bars. Also five minutes' drive away, Pleudihen-sur-Rance has a well-stocked Carrefour Express for any last-minute food shopping (including a VERY good butcher/delicatessen!), an excellent boulangerie, two banks (one with cash distributer) and three bars, one of which provides good-value lunchtime "fixed" menus, and a chemist. For main food shopping, Intermarche, Lidl, etc, are ten to twelve minutes' drive away in Taden (outskirts of Dinan).
