Overview

About the property

Cottage in Boscastle, Cornwall, England - Tranquil And Unique Location Next To A Bubbling Trout Stream And Bluebell Wood. Near To Beaches

Anderton Mill is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Sleeping four in two bedrooms, it provides superb family accommodation, but is also ideal for couples wishing to get away from it all. Renovated by the owners over a period of twenty years, it is very much a home, rather than simply a holiday cottage. This ancient watermill has been converted with flair and finesse and includes slate floors, a log burner, deep oak window seats and contemporary furnishings. The three patios are real sun traps; 'the riverside terrace', is complete with sun loungers, whilst the upper patio has a built-in barbecue and teak furniture. There is plenty to do within the 7 acre grounds, including trout fishing, pond dipping and scaling the tree house, as well as excellent local walks in the valley. The house is only a short drive (or indeed a walk for the fit!) to the North Cornish coast and its varied beaches. Space, peace and tranquillity are the hallmarks of this unique rural retreat.

About Mr Peter Forse

We are married with 2 grown up children and are both teachers. Although we love travelling, Cornwall always draws us back!

Mr Peter Forse purchased this cottage in 1973

Why Mr Peter Forse chose Lesnewth

We stumbled across Anderton Mill by chance when walking in the area. At the time it was a complete ruin but we fell in love with its stunning position in the Valency Valley. We spent the next 15 years lovingly restoring it, as time and money allowed. It is now a very special home. We were delighted to receive Rural Property of the Year Award for 2011. Although we visit often, we have been letting Anderton Mill for almost 20 years, with many of our guests returning year after year - the record being 16 years in succession!

North Cornwall remains one of the least spoilt areas of Great Britain and the Vallency Valley is a very special place. We have spent many happy times here with our family and friends.

What makes this cottage unique

We always enjoy the peace and tranquility of the cottage; the abundance of wildlife and the variety offered by the seasons. Sitting outside on a warm evening is a real joy, listening to the river and gazing at stars we don't see in the city.

This place is unique - something that our guests often comment on.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Melanie and her family were ideal guests. They treated our cottage and its grounds with utmost respect, were very enthusiastic, and answered all our correspondence promptly. We would love them to return.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: This is a wonderful place for both families and couples. Children will love exploring the grounds, especially the tree house, river and ponds. Due to the proximity of water, young children will need to be supervised. Several of our guests have 'roughed it' in the tree house - it contains a small bed - mattress kept in the house. The 3 patios take advantage of the movement of the sun throughout the day and there is outside lighting on the riverside patio for warm evenings. We have a very secluded afternoon/evening patio with built in BBQ and teak furniture, which catches the last of the day's sun. Outside: 3 patios, BBQ area, outdoor furniture, beautiful gardens, ponds, river, small field and plenty of parking. Utility Room: Utility room comprising washing machine, tumble drier and worktop with cupboards. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property is cleaned before your arrival and tea towels are provided. Optional clean midway on a 2 week letting. Currently we ask guests to provide their own bed linen and towels. Duvets are provided.

September stay

  • 5 of 5

We first stayed at this cottage in 2014 and had a lovely time. We stayed at other places over the years but decided this was one of the best.

The owners are very helpful and get back to you very promptly.

The cottage was just as we remembered and it feels more like a home than a holiday cottage.

Our 4 year old daughter loved the huge garden and the tree house. There is lots to do in the area.

We would recommend this cottage to everyone and no doubt we will booking another stay in the future. 5 stars.

Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Anderson a few times before. Really, selfishly we want to keep this place a secret so we can enjoy when we want! It is in such a beautiful position that you cannot fail to relax. It is a struggle to tear yourselves away but the area and coast are so dramatic you have to force yourself out! Don't go if you want constant wifi access or a big TV but most of us are attracted to it exactly for that reason. Homely and well equipped with a brilliant riverside garden terrace.

Excellent place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Anderton Mill is an excellent place to say. Beautifully set in a secluded valley by a rushing stream, nothing could be more idyllic. The Mill itself is full of character and immaculate throughout. It is fully equipped with all that is required. Outside are various areas to sit in and a great bbq. Everything has been thought out so all you have to do is to sit back and enjoy it. It is very easy to access the stunning coast nearby. We enjoyed Crackington Haven which has a great cafe as well as Boscastle. We also did a lot of walks along the coast path. Just round the corner and up the hill is St Juliot's church which Thomas Hardy renovated, during the course of which he met his first wife. Indeed the area has many Hardy connections. There is a great walk into Boscastle following the stream and the wildlife is abundant. All in all there is more than enough here to do and the Mill is a great place to return to at the end of a busy day. Highly recommended.

Beautiful Haven

  • 5 of 5

Wow...a beautiful haven with idyllic surroundings. The cottage is very roomy and equipped with everything you need for your stay including an amazing log burner in the lounge, outdoor bbq and fire pit. The cottage is within walking distance (an amazing walk) to Boscastle itself. Not too far a car journey away from some fantastic beaches and fishing harbours like Padstow and Port Isaac. A fantastic holiday for my husband and I and our 9 year old son who absolutely loved it. This was our first time at Anderton Mill and we will be returning.

Unique location, lovely cottage

  • 4 of 5

This was our second visit to Anderton Mill. It really does have a unique location, nestled into the valley and directly overlooking the Valency stream. We have young boys (6 and 9) who loved pond dipping in the freshwater pond, hunting trout in the stream and taking snacks up to the treehouse. There is loads to do in the nearby area, including superb safe surfing, rock pooling, sand castles and a great cafe at Crackington Haven. The cottage is equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. We didn't mind the lack of wifi for a week! The bedrooms are fresh, clean and cosy. The kitchen is well equipped and has all the basics included, which saves on having to buy lots of stuff you only need in small quantities; just replace what you use up. If you like to get away from it all, if you love cosy cottages and if want to try somewhere a bit different, Anderton Mill is for you!

A hidden gem!

  • 5 of 5

My family have been coming to this cottage every year since discovering it in 2005. The location is idyllic, being set well back from an already quiet road, it provides a very restful and peaceful environment. The gardens are delightful and they offer a range of opportunities for all age groups and the children love exploring them. Visiting the tree house is an adventure in itself! There is always an abundance of wildlife. This year we saw deer and lizards.

Inside, the cottage is very spacious and well equipped. It has all the modern conveniences to ensure a comfortable stay, whatever the weather. The wood burning stove is a a welcome feature if the nights are cool. The owners, Pete and Kay, could not be more helpful. They have continued to make improvements to the cottage, but they have made sure that its wonderful character has been maintained. We have already booked for 2018 and can't wait to return!

The nearest airports are Newquay and Exeter. It is a one hour drive from Plymouth.

There is a good local bus service - Western Greyhound, useful for round robin walks, but a car is advisable.

The nearest village is half a mile away at Tresparrett and has a pub. There is a Post Office and store at Marshgate - about a mile away.
