After 30 years of living in Australia, we decided to have a complete change and, as we had always loved visiting France, this was the perfect place to come to.

We have travelled all over the world and love to meet new people, so we are really enjoying the mix of locals and visitors.

Two weeks of bliss in the Loire

  • 5 of 5

Wow wow wow! What a lovely place to stay! The property was everything we wanted and more. The pool was clean and enjoyed views across the countryside but remained private and not overlooked. The barn at the front of the house provided a nice shady place for our car and to hang our washing. Having access to UK channels on the TV meant my daughter and wife did not miss their beloved Bake Off on BBC1 and there were plenty of places to sit quietly and read inside and out. The stars at night were stunning with the milky way spread across the sky. The kitchen facilities in the cottage were great with lots of very handy tubs for sandwiches etc. plenty of cutlery, pots, pans and plates etc. Outside the BBQ was excellent (not a flimsy cheap version) with a full set of tongs and burger flippers. The bedrooms were clean and comfortable with fresh cotton sheets provided each week we stayed (we didn't miss our own beds!). The location was lovely and quiet and was well situated for the Loire valley. Owners Janet and Phil were so helpful and friendly during our stay and maintained the cottage to such a high standard that we wanted for nothing. They even provided extra towels for use at the as we had traveled light with hand luggage only. We would definitely recommend this property to anyone visiting the Loire.

Perfect gîte for a perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a fantastic week of relaxation at Priory Cottage with our 2 teenage sons who loved the cottage as much as we did (especially with the free Wi-Fi available!). We've loved the spacious, clean, well-equipped accommodation to the full and had a very happy time at the pool, which provided an invaluable source of entertainment for us all. The decked area at the front was perfect for BBQs with the scenic backdrop of the Château across the road. We especially enjoyed star-gazing at the BIG skies at night - and seeing some shooting stars. At €3 per head a tour of the local vineyard was excellent value, with the opportunity to taste all the varieties of wine at the end. (The desert wine was particularly delicious!). Nearby Saumur and its Château with breathtaking views over the Loire were well worth a visit too. Phil and Janet were extremely welcoming and helpful and we'd like to thank them both for the high quality accommodation which made for a perfect holiday. We can't recommend the gite highly enough.

Wonderful relaxing holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Many thanks to our wonderful hosts Janet and Phil for making us feel so very welcome at Priory cottage. From the outset we knew we had made the right decision to stay at the cottage- the thoughtful touch of the welcome card; sunflowers on the table and fresh bread, cheese and a bottle of local wine were so very much appreciated. The cottage has been lovingly restored and is well equipped for your stay. The free wi-fi is "essential " with 2 teenagers in tow and much appreciated!

The surrounding countryside is stunning and it really is a truly unique experience to laze by the pool and listen to the cows mooing, the cockerels cook-a-doodle dooing and the church bells chiming- you really would think that you are a million miles away from everything, yet amenities and charming places of interest are just on the doorstep.

Many thanks again Janet and Phil- we enjoyed the most relaxing holiday which is just what we needed after a very difficult few weeks prior to this. The only negative thing that we can say is that the holiday was over far too quickly! We have no hesitation in recommending Priory cottage and would love to return again one day soon. With love Debbie Pete Matthew and Jessica Hanson x x x x

The best.

  • 5 of 5

Our best holiday by far, the cottage is a real gem. Set in a quiet village but within easy reach of all amenities. The cottage has everything in that you will need, the pool and surrounding decking is superb. Phil and Janet are the best of hosts, always around if you need them. We will be back for sure. • 5 of 5

Great facilities- free Wifi worked well and was v useful, great shower and bathroom, comfy large bedrooms, fab views front and back of house, good parking in the barn, pool lovely when hot. Sitting out areas strong point of this cottage. Well equipped kitchen. We went with active but elderly relative, and she managed the stairs no problem and walk in shower useful, enjoyed the English TV when it was a wet evening. Good situation for visiting chateaux and plenty to do and see within reasonable distance.

Location

From the Owner

When we decided not to further develop the buildings at our home, we looked for a suitable cottage to renovate. When we found the cottage at Passavant, we both knew straight away it was perfect. Passavant-sur-Layon is a delightful village and the location of the cottage opposite the château, is brilliant. The large lake, just a 2 minute walk away is beautiful and the walks around the area are a rambler's delight. The area is very popular with cyclists and the close proximity of the River Loire, gives access so numerous châteaux and historic attractions.

Facilities

From the Owner

The property is private and located at the edge of the village facing the historic fortified walls and gateway of the château. It is a 3 minute drive (or 7 minutes by bicycle) to a very well served village with supermarket, bakery and excellent restaurant. The cottage is set in what were the grounds of an 11th century priory and is in a village famed for it's dessert wines - which really adds to the 'taste' of a French holiday experience. This is a very popular area for walkers and cyclists and just 20 minutes drive from the beautiful town of Saumur on the River Loire.
