Guestbook comments from the owner

Exceptional Cottage: "My husband and I stayed at Gorge View cottage for 2 nights, it was a surprise birthday getaway present for me. We couldn't recommend this cottage highly enough. It's cosy, beautifully built and decorated, extremely environmentally friendly and very comfortable. The owners Huw and Mary were very helpful and welcoming, and really went out their way to make this trip very special and memorable. It was such a pleasure and joy to return to the cottage after a day of exploring, and enjoy it's calming and warming ambience. The cottage is ideally placed to explore the surrounding Mendip hills and of course Cheddar Gorge itself. There are some beautiful walks around here and stunning views from the cottage itself. Nearby Wells is definitely worth a visit. This is a lovely retreat for a break away, thank you Huw and Mary." Rebecca W March 2015

A Somerset Gem: "Stayed for 3 nights for a post Xmas break. What a wonderful cottage. Superbly renovated and a good eye for detail which makes it a really relaxing stay . Close to the gorge- walking distance- and a good base for exploring Somerset. You would not be disappointed !! Thanks Huw and Mary" K.B. January 2015

Perfect: "We spent 4 days in the Cheddar Gorge area and this place was just amazing. Short walk to town, a garden in the back that the owners welcome you to enjoy (great tomatoes). The bed is so comfy you don't want to get up. We are already talking of going back as we have friends who live a couple miles from there and did not even scratch the surface of things to do. Kitchen had everything you needed and then some. Just a perfect get away place." D.D. June 2014

Cosy Eco-cottage with Beautiful Views, Perfectly Located to Explore Somerset: "Gorge View has been carefully renovated to create a comfortable eco-cottage that provides all amenities one could hope for in a short or long stay. The owners were friendly and helpful and make you feel very welcome, even allowing guests to explore their permaculture garden and borrow bicycles from the shed. The cottage is located outside the bustle of Cheddar (which can be very touristy and a little chintzy) in a quieter area of the town. Happily this puts you in direct views of the Gorge but only a few minutes walk from all the shops, pubs, etc. There's ample parking, and this is a really great base to explore the surrounding area: Bristol, Bath, Wells, Glastonbury, the Somerset Levels, coast and the Mendips are all a short drive (or in some cases, walk or bike ride) away." Location

From the Owner

We moved to the Mendips almost 20 years ago, when Huw (my husband) relocated to Bristol. We knew that Somerset was the place we wanted to be, and just over the Mendips everything gets quieter - a healthy 20 miles from cities of Bristol and Bath (close, but not too close). Cheddar nestles on the edge of the beautiful Mendips Hills and yet the Somerset Levels begin here stretching southwards. We have the lovely city of Wells nearby, and Glastonbury with its Tor not much further, and yet the coast is only 10 miles away. If we fancy more adventurous outings we are an easy day's trip to the South Coast (the Jurassic Coast in Dorset is a UNESCO heritage site) , Exmoor, Dartmoor and Cornwall. So for us and the family it has it all.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Bristol International Airport at 10 Miles Nearest Barpub : Riverside Inn at 100 Metres Nearest Golf : Isle of Wedmore Golf Club at 5 Miles Nearest Train : Weston-Super-Mare at 12 Miles Nearest Motorway : M5 (Jn 21 or Jn 22) at 10 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Franks Restaurant at 150 Metres Nearest Beach : Weston-Super-Mare at 12 Miles Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

Gorge View Cottage is perfect for those who enjoy walking with access to the National Trust Gorge Walk just minutes from the cottage, and from there on to many of the nature reserves in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Lots of maps and guides available in the cottage. Alternatively cyclists can enjoy the Mendips or the easier Somerset Levels, including the Strawberry Line historic railway path: if you don't have bikes we can lend you a couple of reasonable ones to use, free of charge.

For those seeking history the city of Wells is just a 15 minute drive away (or direct bus journey). The smallest city in England it has a beautiful Cathedral in a glorious setting with other historic buildings, and the market square where a bustling market takes place every Saturday.

Glastonbury is almost as close with it mix of history and myth, the Tor, Chalice Well Gardens, and Abbey ruins. And of course a range of quirky alternative shops and cafés.

Coast/Beach:

The coast of the Bristol Channel is only 12 miles away and from there it stretches down to the West Somerset coast near Exmoor. Choose from classic seaside town splendour of Weston-Super-Mare with its wide sandy beach, or the bracing walk out over Brean Down the hilly prominent that marks the end of the Mendip Hills.

Or there is more stunning coastline of West Somerset: Watchet, Porlock, Lynton and Lynmouth (30 miles or more).

Travel:

Whilst Cheddar is just 10 miles from the M5 (jn21 or jn22), and we provide free parking for one car, we also encourage those travelling by public transport with a 10% discount. We are well served by buses from Wells, and from Weston-Super-Mare where there is a mainline rail station. Bristol International Airport is just 12 miles away.

Distances:

Cheddar (caves, gorge, cheese making) 5 minutes walk.

Wells (Cathedral, historic buildings, market) 8 miles.

Priddy (folk festival, historic sheep fair) 6 miles.

Glastonbury (Tor, Abbey ruins, Chalice Well Gardens, alternative shops) 13 miles.

Weston-Super-Mare (seaside, beaches, pier) 12 miles.

Bristol (theatres, shops, historic harbour side, museums, ...) 20 miles

Bath (UNESCO World Heritage site, Roman Baths, architecture, great shops) 24 miles.

Further Details:

Although a small village Cheddar has shops for all the essentials, including a good Budgens supermarket with butcher and pharmacy. Two banks and a post office. The gorge has a rich range of specialist shops including of course cheese shops selling traditional farmhouse cheddar cheese, some of it made here in the gorge.

The village has a good range and selection of pubs, cafés, restaurants and take-aways most just a few minutes walk from the cottage. A little further afield are some excellent restaurants including the Pony and Trap on the Mendips which recently received a Michelin star.

Facilities

From the Owner

The cottage opposite the main house is an old gardener's cottage that had been modified as a garage with store rooms many years ago. But it was close to collapse and we decided to renovate it as a living space for ourselves, and to do this in the most environmentally sound way we could (reflected we feel in the Green Tourism "Gold" award we have). With our children leaving home at about the same time we then thought to part rent the cottage for holiday letting: we are after all in a beautiful tourist spot and the cottage enjoys the best views of Cheddar Gorge and the Mendips. A quiet location but so close to pubs, cafes, gorge shops and restaurants. So anyone or any couple looking for a modern but characterful eco-cottage in a great location should find Gorge View Cottage has it all.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Underfloor heating throughout providing a lovely warmth which can be complemented by the excellent log-burning stove if wanted (logs extra). A range of quality high-performance LED lights and halogens spots, wall lights and table lamps, some dimmable, provide a wide range of lighting options. The cottage has been renovated to exacting environmental standards, and also with an eye to details: exposed stone on some walls (including some small carving we discovered on renovation), niche windows, wooden beams from the old railway line. All the additional stone used was sourced from our own garden. Outside: The cottage has its own small patio looking out over the main house garden which is itself open to guests. The main house garden, of around half an acre, is run organically and on permaculture guidelines, and is an accredited wildlife garden (Somerset Wildlife Trust). Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed linen and towels, in natural and mostly organic materials, are provided along with locally hand-made organic soap. Sheets and towels are changed on request.
