Great little place that is located in the heart of Cheddar. Perfect for what we needed, good base for walking and some decent food places within walking distance.... a lot bigger than we were expecting!

Summer Holiday
This is a beautiful property excellently furnished and fitted out and exactly mirrored its description. The location is very good being only a couple of hundred yards to the centre of the village with good restaurants and facilities. It does have a gorge view and a lovely large wild garden. The best property we have stayed in.

The most amazing property, perfect location and really lovely hosts.
Mary and huw are the most fabulous people, welcoming and genuinely warm, both very unintrusive and lovely, everything was covered and we didn't need to ask for anything, the property is clean and located in a prime position with views straight to cheddar gorge, we booked for our 10th wedding anniversary and it was money very well spent, there is access to walks very close in every direction and its a 2 minute walk to the gorge and all its quant little tea rooms and cheese/cider shops, i just can't find enough ways to say how perfect this little gardeners cottage is and if offered we would move in permanently tomorrow, i would recommend this place and Mary and huw as hosts to anyone looking for that something special. So looking forward to our return. Thank you again and much love to you.

About the host

I live with my husband Huw in the main house opposite Gorge View Cottage, so are nearby if you have questions about your stay, what to do in the area etc. I trained as a nurse and later after bringing up our family I trained in psychotherapy and counselling and still have a local practice.

Why they chose this property

We moved to the Mendips almost 20 years ago, when Huw (my husband) relocated to Bristol. We knew that Somerset was the place we wanted to be, and just over the Mendips everything gets quieter - a healthy 20 miles from cities of Bristol and Bath (close, but not too close).
Cheddar nestles on the edge of the beautiful Mendips Hills and yet the Somerset Levels begin here stretching southwards. We have the lovely city of Wells nearby, and Glastonbury with its Tor not much further, and yet the coast is only 10 miles away. If we fancy more adventurous outings we are an easy day's trip to the South Coast (the Jurassic Coast in Dorset is a UNESCO heritage site), Exmoor, Dartmoor and Cornwall.
So for us and the family it has it all.

What makes this property unique

The cottage opposite the main house is an old gardener's cottage that had been modified as a garage with store rooms many years ago. But it was close to collapse and we decided to renovate it as a living space for ourselves, and to do this in the most environmentally sound way we could (reflected we feel in the Green Tourism "Gold" award we were awarded).
With our children leaving home at about the same time we then thought to part rent the cottage for holiday letting: we are after all in a beautiful tourist spot and the cottage enjoys the best views of Cheddar Gorge and the Mendips. A quiet location but so close to pubs, cafes, gorge shops and restaurants.
So anyone, or any couple, looking for a modern but characterful eco-cottage in a great location should find Gorge View Cottage has it all.
