About the property

Farm Cottage in Portloe, Roseland Peninsula, Cornwall, England - Peaceful Location By The Stream, One Minute Walk to the Harbour

Farm Cottage nestles into the valley beside the stream leading to the attractive harbour about 100 metres away. The Ship Inn is just up the road less than two minutes walk and the Lugger Hotel is situated in the Harbour. Portloe is ideally situated for walks on the South Cornish Coastal path and the village is the quintessential unspoilt sleepy fishing village that has featured in many a television programme. Farm Cottage was originally the village Farm House and having been subjected to major renovation is now warm and comfortable yet stylish and light filled with many paintings and works by local artists.

About Mrs. Caroline Bowden

We live in London and have grown up children. My husband and I both work, but spend most of our holidays at our cottage in Portloe and feel very much a part of the community. Farm Cottage is our second home and as such we have tried to make it as comfortable as possible. Our objective is to keep it that way and so we make the cottage available for rent to help cover costs.

Mrs. Caroline Bowden purchased this house in 1990

Why Mrs. Caroline Bowden chose Truro & Falmouth area

We love Farm Cottage and Portloe because of its location and the beauty of The Roseland. My husband has deep family ties to this part of Cornwall so for him being here is a bit like coming home. We love the boating the fishing the tennis and the cliff and beach walks. There are some great pubs and eating places nearby with famous attractions of The Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan not far away. For those whose idea of paradice is a beautiful beach with hardly anyone on it - you have come to the right place.

What makes this house unique

Farm Cottage is an old stone cottage that we have largely rebuilt and modernised as our second home. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we enjoy being here. If you happen to play tennis we are very fortunate to have a great tennis club just up the road in Veryan.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had a fabulous time and the weather was extremely kind with sunshine each and every day. We did what we like most which is long walks lasting many hours and revisiting some of our favourite local settings. We also took the opportunity to visit the Tate to view the amazing photographic exhibition, The Modern Lens - well worth a visit.

I was extremely impressed with your cottage, not only the artwork but the provision of everything one hopes to find in a holiday rental but sadly often does not - Farm Cottage exceeded expectation." J. Lockwood 4th-10th April 2015

"We loved the holiday cottage. It had everything we could have wanted and it was very attractive with all the artwork and pottery on display. The kitchen was a pleasure to cook in and I enjoyed browsing through your good selection of cookbooks. Altogether, the location was perfect and we had a very good holiday. I can't think of any ways to improve it" August 2013

"We had a really nice time. The cottage was lovely and really well equipped. We also had the luck of the weather! I can't think of anything that we weren't happy with" August 2013

"Fantastic house, a real home from home - everything you need under one roof! Great food at the Ship Inn" May 2013

"Wonderful holiday, beautiful house. Portloe is stunning. Fantastic coastal walks. A visit to The Ship is a must" May 2013

"Glorious beach walks, seafood feasts and company. A wonderful first visit to Cornwall". January 2013.

Great for beach dwellers, walkers and shopaholic

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Farm cottage and felt immediately at home. Our party of 7 had an age range from 7 to 75 years and yet everybody felt happy there: toys for the youngster, games (providing many happy evening hours), amazon fire access, books for teenagers and adults alike. Thanks to the fabulous weather the television was rarely used. We visited Portscatho (loved the picture galleries), Falmouth (nice variety of shops) and Newquay, all of which have fantastic beaches often with nearby cafe's. Our favourite were the Lost Gardens of Heligan - beautiful drive from the cottage too, if you like small lanes. This cottage is in a picturesque spot, provides plenty to do for beach dwellers, active adventurers, runners and walkers, connoisseurs of the fine arts as well as shopaholics. You could stay there for a month and not run out of things to do.

The cottage is immaculate and the service from the home owner and care taker is fast, helpful and very friendly.

We had a Toyota Verso and even a bigger car would manage to get into the car park, but a good co-pilot is a bonus.

Also a good place to stay if you are a Rosamunde Pilcher fan, plenty of filming locations within short driving distance.

Highly recommended!

lovely cottage in a stunning environment

  • 5 of 5

Farm cottage is a very well equipped, lovely cottage for people who love to walk and enjoy the rough Cornwall coast. We stayed with 5 in the cottage so had plenty of space with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Access to the parking space is very tight however there is a village parking at 200m from the cottage with plenty of space. Portloe is a pearl along the coast for people who enjoy the rough coast and at less then an hour distance from Eden project, the lost gardens of Heligan, Lanhydrock and the castle of St Mawes, all worth a visit. We definitely recommend this cottage.

Farm Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from 2 glorious weeks in Farm Cottage, blessed with fantastic weather (felt like the South of France!). Portloe is a lovely little fishing village with little more than a pub (v. good), a few houses, a pop up tea room run by our neighbour and an hotel (great menu- we tried to book but they were hosting a wedding so were unable to fit us in!). We enjoyed many lovely walks from the cottage along the headland in both directions, and pottered around the village in the evenings. The braver members of out party swam from the quay at high tide which they insisted was heavenly!

Farm Cottage is very well equipped (the kitchen wanted for nothing), and felt very loved, thanks to the many personal touches and lovely ceramiics and art work around the house. It was spotlessly clean and very comfortable too.

The only drawback was the drive! We drive a VW Sharan which we managed to get in and out of the drive but we needed a couple of 'co-pilots' to do so. It really is a very tight squeeze! The village carpark is a good alternative but not free, and not particularly close either!

The Roseland Peninsular offers a multitude of wonderful attractions. We enjoyed the Lost Gardens, boat trips, 2 theatre trips, one of which was to the Minack, and much, much more. We will definitely return to the area, and hopefully will stay in Farm Cottage.

What a charming cottage in a beautiful location. The rooms were even better than the photographs; sunny, extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean. It was easy for us to self cater, as the kitchen was well equipped- there were even dishwasher tablets provided. The village has a pub and a hotel, so eating out was easy, and the local chapel provided cream teas!

We enjoyed the harbour, and walks on the coastal path, and the many nearby beaches are beautiful and protected.

Many of our friends have already stayed here, and all are as enthusiastic as us about this part of Cornwall, and their stay in Farm Cottage in particular.
