Clayton Cottage is a real home from home, nestled in the tiny village of Howtel in a row of 10 traditional cottages, on a quiet country road. All you can see from the front is rolling hills!

We have made sure that you have everything you need for a self catering cottage holiday, including local information, leaflets of places to visit, books and maps.

Families are very welcome and there's so much to do and see locally, with castles at both Ford and Etal just 5 minutes away.

Three bedrooms upstairs, double, twin and small single. Newly fitted bathroom (2017) and lovely open plan lounge/dining. Kitchen has all you need and we make sure you have wood and coal for cooler evenings by the real fire.

Clayton Cottage is situated right on the edge of the Cheviot Hills, so the views are spectacular and you can walk in any direction straight from the cottage. The local farm is well maintained and quiet - apart from the odd sheep in the field around us!

If you're looking for a quiet get-away, in a truly rural setting, then look no further.

We also use our little cottage regularly, so it's kept in tip top condition (fully re-decorated 2015 and brand new bathroom 2017). For your safety we've fitted double hand rails on stairs, thermostatic shower and smoke / CO2 alarms. No smoking please.

There a private and fenced rear garden and off road parking to the rear. BBQ and garden furniture provided.

About Simon & Liz Rowland

We love to visit our Northumberland cottage whenever we get chance. Our 3 children also love it in Northumberland and as a family we've had some fantastic walks on the beaches and hills, visited some ancient castles, enjoyed stunning views and eaten in lovely pubs and restaurants - all close by.

We've made it a home from home, so we think you'll enjoy your stay too!!

Why Simon & Liz Rowland chose Berwick-upon-Tweed

We had stayed several times in the holiday cottage next door and when we saw our cottage for sale we couldn't resist it. The views of the Cheviot Hills from the cottage are amazing and its sunny position and private garden just sealed it for us.

We live in a village ourselves so wanted a quiet location for our holiday cottage too.

Northumberland is simply beautiful, and the walks along the beaches at Bamburgh (only 30 minutes away) or the Cheviot Hills (from the front door of Clayton Cottage) are amazing.

What makes this cottage unique

Clayton Cottage is in a quiet rural setting, overlooking the Cheviot Hills. There's off road parking and secure private gardens. Also a lockable large shed if you are taking bikes.

At night the stars are amazing!! There is no light pollution and therefore the Milky Way is clearly visible and an amazing sight...And in January 2016 we even saw the Northern Lights!

Notes on accommodation: Local fishing on rivers and lakes, gliding club, golf course, castles to visit, cycling, running, walking. All heating is provided as required, which includes all coal and wood for the log burner in the lounge. The rear garden is completely private and enclosed, mainly lawns and borders. A local gardener keeps everything tidy. BBQ, table and seating provided, plus a washing line. Bikes etc can be stored in the large shed if required. The utility room off the kitchen also leads to the rear porch for boots, coats, pushchairs etc. Tea towels and all bed linen is provided and cleaning is weekly. Please take your own bath and beach towels. The dining room is off the lounge and being open plan makes the cottage light and airy. Table seating for 5 with comfy chairs if you have guests. Fresh light décor throughout makes this a home from home.

A very nice cottage

We have had a wondefull week in the cottage, in fact I need another to get over this one.

We have been out every day and had a good meal in the Red Lion but would recommend booking a table.

The road outside the cottage can be surprisingly busy at times.

cosy cottage, good position to explore Northumberland

Stayed for a week, end of May and enjoyed beautiful Northumberland National park and the coastline, definitely need a car. Fantastic views from cottage, very quiet in Howtel. Everything we needed was available at the cottage including wood and coal for the fire on chilly nights. Very clean and comfortable and hope to return sometime in the future.

Excellent, peaceful and exceptional views.

Our family had the privilege of staying here for a week during our Summer break. Well located and closer to the Scottish Borders and 30 mins from the beautiful beach at Bamburgh. Walls around Etal and Ford and the Battle at Flodden Field is only 5 mins away by car and a wonderful walk. Our boys spent a couple of hours in the park at Branxton which is close by too. Overall highly recommended and spectacular countryside.

We visited this lovely little cottage up in Northumberland on October half term - The valleys around is idyllic and perfect for landscape photographers, wildlife experts or anyone looking for a week away from the helter skelter of everyday life. Lovely walks in the area to while away the hours, just chilling out.

Clean cottage, well maintained. Warm too, with the log burner!

The local beaches are Bamburgh (30 mins drive) and Seahouses (35 mins drive). Bamburgh beach is a beautiful golden beach with rolling sand dunes - a lovely unspoilt walk any time of the year.


The nearest pub restaurant is in Milfield about 2 miles away and they do good food and real ales. Wooler has a well stocked Coop store, pubs and restaurant and other amenities and is about 12 minutes drive. Berwick on Tweed is 18 miles away with super stores and major shops.


Milfield is 2 miles. Wooler is 8 miles. Cornhill on Tweed 6 miles. Coldstream 10 miles. Kelso 13 miles. Berwick upon Tweed 16 miles. Newcastle to the South is 55 miles and Edinburgh to the North 57 miles.
