Rose Thatch & End Cottage, Lower Town, Malborough Village between Kingsbridge, Hope Cove & Salcombe - In A Pretty Village Close To Several Sandy Beaches And Excellent Coastal Walks

Two charming thatched cottages, dating to the early 17th century, in the heart of the beautiful South Hams - the southernmost part of of Devon. Each cottage is full of history and character with beams (not excessively low!) and a wood-burner. They are comfortably furnished and well equipped so as to offer a perfect base to explore this very special area of outstanding natural beauty whether as a family holiday, a walking break or just a relaxing retreat. The weekly rental includes quality bed linen, towels and WIFI. Located on a quiet back lane in the centre of old Malborough Village, two minutes walk to pubs, restaurant, shop & post office and a short drive to several sandy beaches. Each cottage has a private garden and enjoys southerly rural views towards Bolberry Down. There is a private parking space at each cottage and plenty of additional free parking nearby.

End Cottage accommodates 4. It has two bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other with twin (3’) beds and room for a travel cot (supplied on request). The beamed living room is comfortably furnished and has TV with Freeview and DVD player, a wood-burning stove and a characterful dining area. The kitchen is fully equipped, with electric cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, automatic washing machine, dishwasher and small table with bench seat. White modern bathroom suite, with bath (with shower over) and shaver point. There is full electric heating throughout. Access from the lane is by an original entrance porch. Tucked away behind the cottage is a south-facing, enclosed ‘secret’ garden for the exclusive use of our visitors.

The little things make the difference

A lovely authentic cottage. The difference is made by the provision of all the little essentials that are thoughtfully provided; dishwasher tablets for the duration of the stay, washing up liquid, cloths, brushes, sponges, kitchen towel etc. Lovely private garden with Weber BBQ, perfect for fresh sardines and garlic prawns!

A beautiful cottage in a perfect location!

The cottage is superb, very cosy and well equipped, the photos on the website don't do it justice. We felt it was by far the best we have stayed in.

The location is perfect for picturesque coastal and country walks, and with Salcombe and Kingsbridge close by and Hope Cove is well worth a visit (The Cove Cafe Bar is excellent).

I would have no hesitation in recommending End Cottage and we hope to return very soon.

Quaint Character Filled Cottage

We had a lovely week in this charming cottage, and the weather was kind!

Your cottage was great, very quaint and full of character. Ideally situated to explore the Salcombe area, which we did quite a lot of.

On arrival we were greeted with scones, complete with clotted cream and jam! they were very welcome after our long drive.

The cottage was very warm and cosy, the log burner was fab and already loaded with wood ready to light.

There was one parking space, however, should you have a large car you will need to park approx 1 minute walk away on the village car park(not a great problem)

I am sure we will return.

October stay 2015

Nice traditional cottage, well within keeping. Great kitchen with lots of light. Cosy living room but still with more than enough space for a family meal at a table. Bedrooms very comfortable, good views at the back. Fantastic private garden for BBQs with tables and chairs. Secure off road parking. General updating of heavy wear and tear items (such as flooring) in due course will help maintain high standard. The provision of additional heating was welcome, as older properties get cool/frausty very quickly if not in constant use. Perfect location, super helpful owner, very well organised. No problems.

Lovely cottage in a picturesque part of Devon

The cottage was well presented and the secret garden was ideal fro eating outside and very child friendly. Lovely cream tea awaited us on arrival and the kitchen catered perfectly for home cooking. The house was very comfortable to stay in so rainy days were not so disappointing!The village contained the essential with a CO-OP and a great kids park and beaches were local and easily accessible. Great spots for days out to Dartmouth and Salcombe plus the southwest coast path and several National Trust properties in the area.

From the Owner

We bought End Cottage soon after having our first child and realising that we were entering a phase of needing relaxing 'bucket & spade' UK holidays. Clare's parent's life was also entering a new phase, they were retiring, had more time to spare, grandchildren to see and were looking for a new project. We joined forces and turned End Cottage into our family holiday home / holiday rental business. Four years later, we bought the attached cottage, Rose Thatch, as we loved our Devon holidays with Granny & Grandad but was finding End Cottage a squeeze as we'd had two more children. Since then we have holidayed at the cottages several times each and every year. We love the cottages, as do our many repeat customers. We never tire of the charm of the area and are always reluctant to go home

The cottages are within 2.5 miles (driving, a little less if taking footpaths) from a choice of sandy beaches at Hope Cove, Soar Mill Cove, North & South Sands with many more lying a short drive away. The local district ( the South Hams) is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the spectacular coastline of cliffs, coves and creeks is largely manged by the National Trust.


The Cottages are on the southern side of a quiet backlane in the heart of the village of Malborough. Malborough lies on a headland 4 miles south of the market town of Kingsbridge, surrounded by the coastline on three sides, it is 2.5 miles inland of, but half way between, the seaside villages of Hope Cove and Salcombe.

Within easy reach of Plymouth, Totnes, Dartmouth and Modbury.

Further afield are day trips to Dartmoor, the Eden Project or Torbay

Changeover Day:
Our usual changeover day is a Friday but short lets and other start dates may be possible out of high season by arrangement.

Notes on prices:
The weekly rental is fully inclusive of quality bed linen, towels, WIFI & all electricity.

Short breaks and flexible changeover days available outside of high season - please contact the owner to check availability and price.

Discount for couples may be available on full weeks booked at Rose Thatch (excluding high season)

Price reduction if you bring your own linen please ask on booking.

One third of the rental plus £50 (per week) key security deposit is due on booking (if the booking is made more than 8 weeks before the holiday) with the balance being due 8 weeks before the date of arrival.

The cottages make fun and special place to stay.They are so old and full of character; a typical Devon thatched cottage holiday. They offer something different in all seasons - a cosy place to return to after a long autumnal walk, a comfortable bolt hole from winter storms, a relaxing place for a summer BBQ after a day on the beach. They sit in the heart of a small but lively village offering places to eat out, traditional pubs and a Co-op that is open extended hours - there is no need to jump in the car to access these facilities they are just a few minutes walk away. Yet the cottages are on a little back lane with rural views, peace and quiet and staggeringly star-filled night skies. Fabulous location for exploring the area by car (no need to drive along single track lanes) or by foot
