About Clare Mansfield

Rose Thatch and End Cottage are family run and owned by:

Clare & Bill Mansfield - we have 3 children and live in Dorking, Surrey

Mary & Stan Brittain - Clare's parents who live in Coventry, West Midlands

Clare Mansfield purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Clare Mansfield chose Malborough

We bought End Cottage soon after having our first child and realising that we were entering a phase of needing relaxing 'bucket & spade' UK holidays.

Clare's parent's life was also entering a new phase, they were retiring, had more time to spare, grandchildren to see and were looking for a new project. We joined forces and turned End Cottage into our family holiday home / holiday rental business.

Four years later, we bought the attached cottage, Rose Thatch, as we loved our Devon holidays with Granny & Grandad but was finding End Cottage a squeeze as we'd had two more children.

Since then we have holidayed at the cottages several times each and every year. We love the cottages, as do our many repeat customers. We never tire of the charm of the area and are always reluctant to go home

What makes this cottage unique

The cottages make fun and special place to stay. They are so old and full of character; a typical Devon thatched cottage holiday. They offer something different in all seasons - a cosy place to return to after a long autumnal walk, a comfortable bolt hole from winter storms, a relaxing place for a summer BBQ after a day on the beach.

They sit in the heart of a small but lively village offering places to eat out, traditional pubs and a Co-op that is open extended hours - there is no need to jump in the car to access these facilities they are just a few minutes walk away. Yet the cottages are on a little back lane with rural views, peace and quiet and staggeringly star-filled night skies.

Fabulous location for exploring the area by car (no need to drive along single track lanes) or by foot

Lovely cottage, great area

  • 5 of 5

Rose Thatch is a lovely cottage in Malborough.

We had previously stayed in Kingsbridge many times and frequented Salcombe/North Sands. Rose Thatch is ideal for both and no distance at all.

The cottage itself is excellent and the five of us liked it a lot. That said, the weather was excellent so we ere generally out early and back late. we didn't use the cooker at all and only had breakfast at the cottage. The rooms are clean, spacious enough and the view is wonderful.

Parking : We had read the words about parking at the cottage and the gap between the properties was a real challenge for me in a VW Passat - I had about a centimetre to play with either side of the car, with the wing mirrors already tucked in. Ours might be wider than most and the neighbours didn't seem to struggle. We unloaded the car on arrival and then parked just up the road - there's plenty of parking within 100 yards so no issues at all.

All in all - great place, great stay and good communications from the owner Clare (and very quick return of deposit).

Thanks :-)

Delightful cottage, full of character

  • 5 of 5

A delightful cottage, comfortable with all mod cons yet full of character. We found the cottage clean, well presented and as described. Friendly neighbours and a short walk to the shops. Just the place to get away from it all yet be close to everything you need, especially all the beautiful, local attractions such as the beaches. Highly recomended.

Wonderful character cottage.

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful character cottage. We arrived to a warm cottage with scones, jam & clotted cream waiting for us - what a treat. Great location in the centre of Marlbrough but secluded & quiet with parking (a must). Narrow to get through to parking but we have a 4x4 & made it fine. Fantastic spot to get to all the local beaches easily. Beds very comfortable. Look forward to visiting again.

Comfortable and great base for south Devon

  • 4 of 5

Cottage quite roomy and comfortable for 2 to 5 people. Attractive and quirky. Children or less abled need to take care with the two tight and steep stair cases to bedrooms - appreciating also that the only bathroom/toilet is downstairs. Small terrace or gardens idyllic settings for a glass of wine or two on a sunny evening !!! Village has a couple of pubs but are both pretty basic. Parking provided really is only for small cars as entrance at side of cottage is very tight - but there is safe parking available short walk away. Neighbours very friendly and helpful. Owners also couldn't have done more to help ensure a great stay. Many places in easy reach of this great base. Certainly a place to recommend.
