Charming Perigordine House With Private Pool And Panoramic Views

Updated: 10-Oct-2016
House in Le Fleix, Dordogne, France - Peaceful Location With Short Drive To Village Shops And The Towns Of Ste Foy And Ber

This charming and spacious house with private swimming pool is set in a peaceful location with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. French doors from the lounge open onto the terrace which overlooks the rear garden and pool where the sun shines all day. The terrace is an idyllic place to relax after a hard day by the pool, with a glass of local wine, and watch the magnificent evening sunsets. The accommodation is all on the ground floor and the house is well equipped for your needs on holiday. There are 3 double bedrooms, one with a king size bed and two with twin beds, all with fitted wardrobes, dressing tables and bedside cabinets. One of the twin bedded rooms also has a washbasin in an alcove. The lounge is very spacious, light and airy with new comfy sofas and armchairs (pictures to be uploaded) and a new flat screen TV has been installed this year. The well equipped kitchen has everything you need and the dining area has a table to seat 6 people which can be extended to seat 8/10 - extra chairs are kept in the utility room adjoining the kitchen where there is also a 2nd 'fridge, useful for storing extra drinks, a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, ironing board and iron etc. There is a choice of games including table tennis, a junior pool table, table top football, and a selection of board games and books for the less energetic! Outside the garden is spacious with plenty of room for children to run and play games, and the pool is fenced to keep children safe. Garden furniture for alfresco dining and sun beds for lazing by the pool are provided. The 18 hole golf course at the beautiful Château Vigiers is within a 15/20 minute drive from the house and the Château has a choice of restaurants or you can relax on one of their terraces for brunch or lunch. The local village of Le Fleix has all you need for those everyday items including a boulangerie for freshly baked bread and croissants in the morning, a small well stocked supermarket, post office, chemist, restaurant and a wine cooperative where you can sample local wines that you might like to take home. Cycle hire is available and popular in the area and we can arrange for bikes to be delivered to the house by a local hire company and children's bikes are free. If you would like to spend some time cycling around the locality, or collecting your freshly baked croissants in the morning, this can easily be arranged. A 5 minute drive from the house is a newly built shopping mall and the historic market towns of Ste Foy La Grande and Bergerac with their many shops, cafés and restaurants are both within a short drive. Whether you are looking to spend the time relaxing by the pool, or visiting some of the beautiful Chateaux and towns in the Dordogne, Les Barthes is the ideal place to make your holiday both memorable and enjoyable.

Perfect getaway !

  • 5 of 5

We (myself, husband, grown up daughter and dog) stayed at this beautiful property for 2 totally relaxing weeks. We were joined for the second week by son and his girlfriend yet there still remained plenty of space for us all. The property is a true delight, and a real 'home from home', having stayed at some bland and boring holiday lets in France over the years it was fantastic to find somewhere that felt so homely and was so well equipped, from the abundance of outdoor seating to the wealth of kitchen utensils and equipment , Sheila has really thought of everything.

We were very lucky with the weather during our stay and as a result spent many an idle moment lazing around the wonderful pool and gazing at the beautiful views across the fields.

Our dog Bessler thoroughly enjoyed the space and freedom to run around and let off steam, in fact I think he felt a bit depressed on our return home and wondered where his 2 acres had gone !

There is lots to do in the local area - we can recommend visits to St Emilion and local vineyards for wine lovers, and be sure to check out the local markets for a wealth of fresh local produce. We had a wonderful evening at the night market at Ste Foy and can also recommend the bike hire company that Sheila had left details on in the property.

Communication by Sheila was fantastic, she gave us the details of a local vet before we travelled so we could arrange the necessary pre UK return check for the pet passport. Sheila telephoned us before we left for France and again on our return to check all was well / offer information, and I really felt that she takes a pride in ensuring her guests have a great holiday.

We really look forward to returning soon, and thank you so much for the bottles of wine that were waiting for us when we arrived !

Beautiful house in a very peaceful location

  • 4 of 5

Les Barthes was true to it's description, it was clean, very French, but a little dated. We had a fabulous holiday. The house was so well equipped, there was nothing more we could possibly have needed. We enjoyed the swimming pool, the full sized table tennis, boules and all the other games provided. Sheila, the owner, gave us very good customer service. Our favourite place to visit was St Emilion which was about one hour's drive away. We also enjoyed several visits to Bergerac and a special place is the castle in Duras, a thoroughly worth while trip. After spending one month at Les Barthes, we would strongly recommend it to anyone visiting the Bergerac area.

Owner's Response: Following Ann & Jim's review from their stay last September, there were just four words, "but a little dated", which made us decide that perhaps the time had come to address that point and, whilst retaining the French influence within the house, we have, this year, completely refurnished the lounge and updated the kitchen with new cupboard doors.

A perfect Rest

  • 5 of 5

My husband, myself and our two boys stayed here for one week and had a truly relaxing time. The pool was a great place to chill out and the table tennis set and garden were perfect for the boys to run and let off steam. Although there are a scattering of houses nearby the cottage is lovely and private so no worry there about the children having fun!

We particularly enjoyed cycling via the back roads to Le Fleix for our croissants and bread each morning. The cottage in itself was well equipped and well placed to explore the surrounding countryside and also the coast. All in all we had a lovely time and felt rested after our week.

Great holiday

  • 5 of 5

Everyone involved (ages ranging from three to sixty six) had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. The house met our high expectations, being both charming and very well equipped. The setting, with pool and garden, afforded every opportunity we had hoped for in which to play and relax and the immediate surrounding area, with its working farms, gave a brief glimpse of rural life as well as being very beautiful. The relative remoteness (a short drive from Le Fleix) was a really positive factor for us although, to begin with, we did miss the opportunity for a stereotypical, early-morning stroll for the croissants. We soon got over it!

The sunsets we were promised were indeed very beautiful as was the sudden storm that rushed at us one evening!

Les Barthes is ideally situated for exploring the area. We made a trip to St. Emilion (very beautiful); several to Ste Foy La Grande, where we found the market great fun, as well as visiting two chateaux. Two of us also had a wonderful canoeing trip on the Dordogne (only a few minutes away).

The owners provided excellent customer service throughout and we would all recommend Les Barthes to friends and family without hesitation.

Our thanks to everyone concerned for a happy and hugely enjoyable stay.

A peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We have to give this holiday rental 5 stars as we have returned 3 times. The house is clean and comfortable, plenty of space indoors and out and offers complete privacy.

An ideal base for exploring the Dordogne region, great for walking, cycling and canoeing.

We love the gardens, picking fruit from trees (apples, plums, pears) and have had great games of hide and seek with the children.

We have spent long evenings sitting out on the terrace, enjoyed sampling the local wines and gazing at the stars (a sight to behold!)

We will definitely return to Les Barthes.

Ideal for touring or relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We had not previously stayed in this part of The Dordogne and we found plenty to see and do with plenty of good places to eat. If we did not want to go out we found the house ideal for relaxing quiet but not too isolated with a fantastic swimming pool . The house itself was equipped with everything you would need for a great holiday. We enjoyed it so much that we are going again in 2014.

From the Owner

We love the Perigordine style of property unique to this region of France and wanted to buy a house where we could spend family holidays in the sunshine and that we could also turn into our home from home. We fell in love with Les Barthes on a damp day in the late autumn of 2002 and we knew immediately that it was the one for us and we could make it into the house we wanted for the future years and that's just what we did.

From the Owner

We replaced the vegetable plot with a purpose built swimming pool where we have spent, and continue to spend, hours of fun. The house is spacious with light and airy rooms where the sun streams in through the windows. There are lovely views of the surrounding countryside from every room and the evening sunsets over the pool are quite beautiful and something to savour whilst enjoying a glass of wine on the terrace.
