Villa Artemis is located on a hilltop in the heart of the lively village of Almyrida. The villa, built in traditional Cretan style, offers two 3-bedroom apartments and a further 2-bedroom apartment on the first floor of the second villa on site. The apartments are generously spaced with air-conditioned bedrooms. The balconies offer amazing views over the Bay of Souda and the horseshoe-shaped village. Almyrida Blue flag beach is 2-3 minute walk away, shops and restaurants are within 7-10 minutes walk. The apartments have wi-fi, TV, fully equipped kitchens and spacious freezers essential for beers and wines on balmy Cretan evenings. Apartments offer parking, cots, high chair, pushchair. Almyrida has water sports, swimming, snorkelling. Its choice of quality cafes and tavernas and its quiet, clean beaches makes it an ideal place for families. Easy access to Chania airport and its natural and archaeological treasures also makes the apartments a well-positioned base for those who enjoy exploring. The apartments are a ten-minute walk to a stunning village of Plaka where 'Zorba the Greek' was filmed. The famous Elafonissi beach is just over an hour's drive away.

About the Owner

Maria, Yannis and Artemis live in a ground floor apartment below the 2-bedroom apartment and next to Villa Artemis which is split into two 3-bedroom apartments. They've been running the holiday business for over 10 years, with many guests returning to the luxurious simplicity of their accommodation, their ‘nothing’s too much trouble’ approach and those balcony views. Yannis’s daughter Artemis speaks fluent English. Maria speaks limited English and Yannis will always greet you with his infectious smile rivalling the ever-present Cretan sun! We are helping Maria and Yannis to market the properties. We are a family of four, live in Cambridge and spend two weeks of every summer in Almyrida. We know the area well and will provide tips and advice if you choose to stay at Artemis Apartments.

Stay in Artemis

We were pleasantly surprised by the apartment. It was relatively inexpensive yet it was spacious and clean and the view was spectacular. We had a choice of 5 balconies!

Maria who organised our stay from the UK was extremely helpful as was Maria (another Maria) next door who was there to greet us on arrival.

There is no swimming pool but the beach is 5 minutes away. My teenage daughters loved swimming in the sea. Almyrida itself is quite small but has numerous restaurants most of which were really good. I'd recommend eating at the Sunset restaurant up the hill (turn left on coming out of the apartment) towards Plaka. The sunsets are amazing.

Probably need a car unless you are staying put in Almyrida.

Coast/Beach:

Almyrida Blue Flag beach is perfect for swimmers of all abilities: its shallow access makes it safe for the parents to watch their children (including toddlers) play in the water from their sun loungers while having a coffee, a freshly-baked doughnut or a beer. More confident swimmers go further out of the bay with snorkelling and diving opportunities aplenty. Kayaks, pedalos, windserfing, diving classes available in the village. Other beaches to suit all tastes are within 10 mins-1hour driving.

Chania city and airport – 30-40 minutes drive

Heraklion city and airport – 90-120 minutes drive

Rethimno city with Venetian Fortress – 45-60 minutes drive

Samaria Gorge – 45 minutes drive

Authentic Cretan villages in the mountains – from 5 to 60 minutes drive

Distances:

Almyrida beach is 3-5 min walk, Almyrida shops and restaurants 7-10 minutes walk away. Plaka village is 3 minute drive or 10 minute walk away (uphill). Kalives 10 minutes drive away. Chania city is 30 minutes drive, mainly on a motorway.

Further Details:

Almyrida has all amenities including a bank, two ATMs, a car hire company with British staff, a pharmacy, a taxi service, several small supermarkets, a fresh fish van, a bakery, free wi-fi in almost all cafes and restaurants, a British-owned bar/restaurant with large-screen TV and weekly quiz nights.

Kalives which is ten minutes drive away, has a large well-stocked Inka supermarket.

Ennis restaurant in neighbouring Plaka and the restaurant on the main square of tiny Gavalochori village are a must. We strongly recommend scheduling a trip to Chania city with its Venetian Harbour, narrow romantic streets, bars, cafes and tavernas, very good value boat trips, shopping, two markets with fantastic offers of local produce. Notes on parking in Chania available on request. The city of Rethimno has a gorgeous Venetian Fortress worth visiting for those who are keen to explore the ancient architecture. Freshwater lake Kourmas with beaches, pedalos, water sports, tavernas and sightings of sea turtles is less than an hour drive away.

  • Notes on accommodation: We are a family with two sons (aged 12 and 7 in 2015) and have been visiting Artemis apartments almost every year since 2006. We enjoy the simple luxury of those airy spacious properties, we love the village and no swimming pool means it is the beach every time, a tiny walk away, clean, quiet and beautiful. The gentle entry makes it 100% safe for toddlers and reluctant swimmers. More confident swimmers simply go further! The owners, Maria and Yannis, who live on the ground floor of the second villa are two of the most hospitable people we have ever met. They are always immediately available for help with any matters, advice on choice of restaurants, directions etc. There is an olive grove garden around villa Artemis, fresh figs and grapes available in August and September, guaranteed sunshine and enough to do and see whether you choose to hire a car and explore the gorgeous island or limit yourself to a 3-minute walk to the beach and bakery with fresh bread, doughnuts and croissants. Outside: There are olive groves, vines, oleander, bougainvillea in the garden around the apartments. All apartments have balconies on two sides making them perfect for lazy breakfasts, sumptuous dinners and late night drinks, enjoying balmy Mediterranean evenings. The balconies are furnished with tables, chairs and sun umbrellas.
