About this property

Spectacular Château, Heated Swimming Pool, Tennis Court, Grand Piano, BBQ, WiFi

Set in a magnificent position, in 125 acres, Château Cardou is a perfect place for a holiday with family and friends.

There are wonderful views across and up the Vallée d'Or (Golden Valley), and for a distance of over 20 km to the pretty hilltop town of Monflanquin (one the most historically intact examples of a medieval bastide town). The approach is up a long private drive, through a plantation of young firs and hardwood trees amongst beautiful mature chestnut, cherry and ash.

Bedrooms

There are three double bedrooms each with en-suite bath or shower rooms on the ground floor, off these bedrooms are 3 dressing rooms which may be used as children's bedrooms.

From the dining hall, the stairs lead to the top floor where there are two charming tower rooms, each with a double bed and its own bathroom. These rooms have magnificent views up and down the valley to the east and west. Then there is a huge attic playroom (with satellite Television and DVD), off which are 3 further small twin bedded rooms with additional showers and lavatories.

Downstairs, there is another twin-bedded room with its own shower room.

Heated Swimming Pool

The heated swimming pool (5.5m x 11m) lies in a lavender scented sun trap beside two pretty stone barns and is enclosed by a safety fence. The poolside terrace includes a stone table and barbecue. The flood-lit Tennis Court is just beyond the stone barn.

Kitchen, Dining Hall and Drawing Room

The well equipped kitchen has two electric ovens, a microwave, an American fridge, a dishwasher, plenty of china and glass, and a full array of pots and pans. A French chef can be organised if required.

The dining hall has a massive stone chimney breast, in which you can have a roaring log fire, and a baronial table which seats up to 16. A stereo hi-fi and a Pleyel grand piano are provided for entertainment.

The drawing room has comfortable sofas, an open fire, and a satellite television with DVD player. There is table tennis in the cellar.

Maid Service

Maid service is included three mornings a week to keep the house clean. Additional maid service may be arranged on request to the staff at an hourly rate. If required, we can provide details of local baby-sitters to enable you to make your own arrangements.

Linen and Towels are provided, but please bring your own swimming towels.

The château is built over a vast cellar in which there is a laundry room with an automatic washing machine.

Idyllic french chateau
Wonderful chateau in the perfect location. Ideal place for unwinding and enjoying peace, tranquility and good food (the local chef is an excellent option)

Beautiful private Château with a great pool
Chateau Cardou was the base for a wonderful holiday. We thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent house, its pool, tennis and surroundings. Although rural and private the supermarket is only 10 minutes away. The place is clean and well maintained and big. Plenty of room for all of us! Great area of France. I'd recommend it highly!

We had a splendid holiday
Dear Joanna and Bill Thank you so much for loaning us Chateau Cardou. We truly had a wonderful time and the house was perfectly appointed for all our needs. The house is really well equipped and Your attention to detail with the children's cots / plastic cups plates and spoons / and toy cupboard was a lovely addition. The house more than exceeded our expectations and we would highly recommend it to families / large parties who like to be both together but with space to be apart. The swimming pool and tennis court were enjoyed by all. The piano is also beautiful. Best wishes Suzannah

Chateau
Chateau Cardou is a magnificent property with beautiful bedrooms and living rooms throughout. It is clearly an authentic chateau but it's also clear that it was completely renovated recently and is in excellent condition with a modern kitchen well decorated throughout. It really is the most magnificent property we have stayed in. We had three families staying here with nine children. The upstairs is a large open space with half a dozen bedrooms all round. This became the kids space. Downstairs is the kitchen, living room, dining room, we could seat all 15 of us here in one go and larger bedrooms. There are utilities and a table tennis table in the basement. Outside there is a decent sized heated outdoor pool, gardens and tennis court and with all these facilities we could have kept the family happy at the Chateau all week. Nearby we could explore the woods and nearby vinyards. The fields around were a mixture including vines and sunflowers and the property is set a little way off the "main" road so we didn't have to worry about anyone running into the road and it was quite private. The local area is not the most interesting I have found in France but we went caneoing on the river, did some rock climbing, explored the local castle and longer trips to Rocamadour and the caves for the more spectacular. We have been concerned about stories of fake listings on Owners Direct and for completeness, the property is owned by Joanna & Stuart a rather posh, mature English couple who clearly spend a lot of time in France. If they are in England they will supply a phone number with a Newbury, Berkshire area code and I recommend that you speak to Joanna who will also supply the web address and details of their other properties.

About the host

Hosted by Joanna & Bill

Host profile image
Joanna and Bill Stuart-Bruges bought their first property in France in 1973, when they originally fell in love with the amazing Lot/Dordogne/Aquitaine region. At that time Bill's job had taken them, just married, to Bordeaux. They already had little Lilac Cottage in Devon. Now based in Hampshire, they now spend half their time in France, where Joanna has built up a team of excellent local craftsmen and housekeepers to restore and help look after 3 châteaux, as well as the original little farmhouse Lafage. The family includes several musicians and there are now 5 grand pianos and one upright, distributed amongst the properties!

Why they chose this property

Cardou is very comfortable. Three of the bedroom suites are on the ground floor, so excellent for families and the elderly. Huge play/entertainment space upstairs.

What makes this property unique

120 acres of wooded hillside, fabulous view, private pool, tennis, grand piano, table tennis, wendy house, bbqs, UK satellite TV + French TV, DVD/BluRay, BBC R4 on FM.
