Overview

Property

Updated: 07-Nov-2016
House in La Caunette, Nr. Beziers, Herault, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Very French Location, 5 Mins To The Cité Of Minerve, 40 Minutes From Mediterranean Beaches

This gite, originally built into the stone of the area has been carefully renovated. It's private pool is set in a pretty enclosed terrace with it's own outdoor shower and loo - perfect for lounging as well as BBQs, with its own outdoor summer kitchen. The terrace has the most amazing views of the countryside, whilst being set in the pretty stone built village. It also has a private terrace, with lovely views accessed from the master bedroom. The village of La Caunette is an ancient one with two restaurants and several caves (wine merchants) a boulangerie, a general store and a post office. Nearby (within 30/40 minutes drive) you can find river bathing (5 mins), kayaking, horse riding, walking, the Canal du Midi, the Corbieres, and the famous City of Carcassone. Within five minutes is the beautiful Cite Minerve, full of restaurants and caves, set above the deep and fascinating river Gorges, plenty to enjoy and explore. Also nearby is the pretty spiral built village of Aigne filled with artists and a pretty restaurant.

Fantastic holiday at La Caunette

  • 5 of 5

Lovely village property tucked away in a quiet pretty hamlet in the heart of the Minervois region. Really peaceful and private house but with easy access to village facilities including a great restaurant and shop where you could buy fresh bread and provisions. Lots of lovely walks around the local hills and vineyards. Narbonne, Carcassonne and Canal du Midi all less than 1 hour away by car. The house was immaculate and spotlessly clean with everything you could need for a really comfortable stay. The lovely pool and outside kitchen were a real bonus for al fresco dining. Remy the owner and other members of his family were all really helpful and friendly which made us all (including our 15year old daughter) feel at home and really welcome throughout our stay. We would all absolutely go back to this part of France and to the property which is one of the best we have stayed in over many years of travelling through France. Thank you to Remy and all who made our stay so pleasurable

A French Delight

  • 5 of 5

As soon as we drove into the village the French culture welcomed us. Remy was there to greet us and although we didn't speak French he showed us around this quaint and quirky house. The bottle of wine and fruit was a nice touch. The photos do not do it justice, it is a warm, maintained and well laid out property. The views are amazing and the locals so friendly. We ate out 3 times in the village and enjoyed evening bbq's around the lighted pool area. The pool is very private and spacious and the outdoor cooking area is a real bonus. Over our week long stay we visited Beziers, Olonzac and Pezenas. I wouldn't hesitate to come here again explore this lovely region further.

Superb holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this cottage in July 2014. It was excellent, everything provided (even bikes) and Remy was around if needed to help out. The pool terrace was the scene for a number of happy BBQs, the house itself is delightful. La Caunette is an unspoilt village with 2 excellent restaurants and a village shop just 5 minutes walk away. There are 3 wineries in the village also. The area has it all - rolling limestone scenery with gorges, quaint villages, Canal du Midi, the Med less than 1 hour away, Cathar castles, canoeing, air parks; and wines and olives everywhere.

Care needed on the steps for very small kids and the elderly, but we had a fabulous week and would certainly consider returning in the future.

Remy was charming and was there to meet us even though we arrivd over 3 hours late! This is a pretty little house is set in a beautiful location and has everything you need and is located on the edge of a very special village which is blessed with a post office, village store, a superb restaurant and a lovely cafe. The welcome pack was a wonderful bonus and with a local store on our doorstep breakfasts were easy to buy as we went along and just one visit to the nearby supermarket was needed during our stay. It helps to know a bit of French as not much English is spoken here!Lots to do and plenty of places to explore within easy driving diestance or just relax by the pool and unwind. The kitchen is well equipped and there are lots of differnet places to eat, drink and enjoy the views around the house. Not suited to people with mobility problems due to the steepness of the stairs and possibly risky too for young children.

This is an absolutely charming little house with many quirky, but beautifully designed, features necessitated by its position of being built into the rock. It has been lovingly and stylishly renovated with great attention to detail.

It may be unsuitable for the elderly or very young due to the steep staircase to the upper level and the pool area but well suited us.

A fantastically equipped kitchen and lovely touch of some cold drinks in the fridge and fresh fruit on the table to greet us after our long journey.

Lots of outside areas to enjoy cooking and eating as well as having an early evening drink whilst taking in the beautiful countryside.

The setting is private within a very friendly and safe village which has a local store selling everything you need, so fresh bread, pastries and local produce available each morning only a 5 minute walk away! Also a lively cafe and excellent restaurant in the village made eating out easy (we ate out 4 nights during our week long stay!) as no arguments as to who was driving home!

The area is simply stunning and we really enjoyed visiting le Somail and Minerve just up the road, local markets, wine and olive tasting as well as having a relaxing time by the pool. Carcassone and Narbonne are also nearby as are some beautiful beaches, but in our week-long stay we didnt have time to visit them.

Remy is delightful and very helpful. He lives in the village and greeted us on our arrival (even though we were over 3 hours late) and was there to say farewell! You do need at least a smattering of French, although Sue can be contacted and is on the other end of phone if you need more help.

It is also known for it's Vide Greniers (literally meaning 'empty your loft'), where local people sell anything from vintage clothes and linen sheets, to glassware and pottery, bric a brace and furniture and goats cheese. These occur somewhere in the region almost every weekend in season. There are also many summer festivals in the outlying villages, including a large music festival in Narbonne and the huge summer festival in Bezier. In this area you can go to the beach, discover the many wine caves, enjoy great seafood as well as fantastic local produce, go the mountains for stunning beauty, and kayaking - easy to book and enjoyable for the whole family - and walking. There is horse riding available where you can ride in the local hills of Bize - we can organise this for you. For fishermen there is the canal du Midi and the nearby rivers. We're in a rural area, but just 25 minutes drive from the lovely city of Narbonne.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: A recently refurbished and charming gite, perfectly placed and very suitable for families and couples who would like to enjoy quiet privacy and stunning views but within easy reach of many activities. The village of La Caunette provides a pretty place for a stroll as well as the opportunity for long restaurant lunches and evening meals within walking distance of the gite. The gite can be kept cool in summer by closing shutters in the morning, and opening windows and shutters in the evening - as the French do, and as it is built into cool rock it does not get super hot. The pool is in a very pleasant enclosed terrace, not overlooked and with it's own olive tree and great views, as well as having the advantage of poolside showers. Linen and towels provided, the properties are cleaned at changeover. Outside: The lovely pool (size 8m by 4m) set in very pretty terrace, planted out with summer climbers including scented honey suckle and jasmine with the most stunning and relaxing views of the surrounding countryside. It is fully equipped with pool loungers and to one end has an partially enclosed tiled shower and a roofed area, which provides both shade. The pool terrace is accessed by a small amount of easy steps from the main house. There is also a sitting out area to the front of the gite, and a pretty terrace accessed through the master bedroom (and from the outside terrace), with planted out flower containers, which is a perfect place for a quiet sit with a glass of wine or a coffee, away from the pool. Utility Room: Washing machine. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property is cleaned on changeover. Towels and linens are included. Other: Small office area, with computer available for use and wifi.
