About Douglas Clowser

Hi we are Alison and Doug. I am a Civil Engineer and Alison works in Architecture. We met when working together on a large project for the army centred around Salisbury Plain.

We sold my house in Surrey and moved to Wiltshire in 2012 and decided to buy a house to let as a holiday home so others could enjoy the same holidays we had.

Alison enjoys gardening and has planted many roses and climbing plants to brighten up the house and has planting plans to make the area even prettier.

I am interested in classic cars and have one myself that I enjoy using in the summer on the quiet local roads which allow a more sedate way of driving.

Douglas Clowser purchased this house in 2012

Why Douglas Clowser chose Wiltshire

I fell in love with this area on the Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset borders years ago when I used to bring my children here on holiday. We loved the beautiful scenery and quiet roads which are a welcome change from where I used to live within the M25.

Mere is a lovely old village that doesn't seem to have been discovered by too many tourists so is still peaceful in the summer, but surrounded by lots to do within an hour in any direction.

What makes this house unique

My grown up children still live in Surrey so the easy access to the A303 is very convenient for me and I can be back in Epsom within 90 minutes. It also gives superb access in to Somerset and on into Devon.

I used to take the children to Longleat when they were younger and it is only a short drive along country lanes from Mere.

I think one of the nicest things about staying in Mere is that you are not living in a tourist destination. Every day you can enjoy a quiet drive to somewhere of interest and then return to calmer surroundings in the evenings.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We all had a great time. Lovely house and surroundings. Great place to explore this beautiful part of England

Unrealistic Visitor policy

  • 1 of 5

This was our main family holiday, we chose the property based on its central location to other family members living in the UK.

First impression - The 4 bedroom property that we rented looks ok from the outside although we noticed that we always had to drive inside the owner’s grounds and past the owner’s house to gain access to the residence. (Big Brother feeling)

The inside of the house was not too bad although the carpets were rather stained and need a good clean, peeling paint especially in the bathrooms, oven not fully functioning, shower bath water not draining properly, bathroom damp and very very creaky floors upstairs. The rooms are rather small but adequate. The facilities eg washing, drying, fridge and Wi Fi are ok.

We were very concerned about the no visitor policy (which we were aware of and had Emailed the owner to advise of extenuating circumstances) but not aware that the owner seems prepared to go almost physical lengths to enforce it. The actions resulted in disabled elderly lady having to get herself inside the property (normally assisted) and left on her own for a couple of hours with her elderly friends being forced to leave.

We left the property in good order before we left but the owner’s comments suggest this was inadequate. We are confused by the owner’s review of the house state, as it appears that the expectation must be that it is vacated in a cleaner state than it was found it in. We would have expected a certain amount of cleaning to be done by the home owner in preparation for the next visitors as with normal rentals.

The owner did not have the courtesy to approach us before during or after our stay in the property.

Visiting the UK and having some friends meet us at the property to save us travelling everywhere would have been ideal, our visitors would then have had the opportunity to recommend the property to their friends etc, however the no visitor policy does not permit this.

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

We spent 4 nights in this lovely house which provided an excellent base for visiting Stonehenge, Longleat Safari Park, Cheddar Gorge and Bath. The village of Mere is perfectly located within walking distance, although we didn't have time to use the pubs or restaurants, but the Co-op was very handy! The local park was great for the kids, just wish they had brought their scooters to have a go on the skate ramps!

We had everything we needed in the house and made use of the BBQ too.

Would definitely recommend to others and only minor negative was the double mattress in the main bedroom, could do with an upgrade.

Many Thanks

Owner's Response: The mattress is only 2 years old and is fairly firm. We appreciate that not everyone likes a firm mattress and some of the other beds have softer mattresses

Well located, nice property

  • 4 of 5

The property is nicely situated within Mere, 5 minutes walk to centre where there is local pubs, tea shops, shops. Property is well stocked with things you require for a home away from home, with extras of milk in the fridge upon our return for a welcome cup of tea.

Very nice property, would stay again.

  • 4 of 5

First impression of the property was that it was clean and well equipped. However, there were a lot of cobwebs, dust on the TV and pictures, and the TV's need looking at because not all channels were available and the main TV would lose sound if you changed the channel. We also noted a couple of electric sockets were hanging off the wall, one in the main bedroom and although the second one was behind the sofa in the lounge it was accessible for young children who like exploring (not sure if owners are aware of this), we feel this should be addressed. Overall it is a lovely place to stay with lovely views over the field at the back, where we took the little ones to play and had a picnic. It was a very good base for local attractions - Wookey Hole, Longleat, Haynes Motor Museum, Fleet Air Arms Museum, East Somerset Railway, Bath and many more. We had a fantastic week and the weather was good. Mere is a lovely place to stay with amenities all within walking distance. Would stay here again.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately things do get damaged and are not brought to our attention. We did spot the damaged sockets after Teresa Carmen and her family left and these have been attended to. We were not aware of any problems with the televisions, both of which are modern flat screen TV's with Freeview. We only live next door and could easily have retuned the TV. As soon as we received this review I went and spoke to the new holidaymakers and they weren't having any trouble with the television The house is cleaned from top to bottom once, sometimes twice, a week but at this time of year the spiders can work quicker than us. We will pay extra attention to this in the future.

Great Time

  • 5 of 5

We are a family with 4 kids (aged from 6 to 15) from Vienna and we spent a really good time in this home. Mere is a small town but offers everything you need. Restaurant and a supermarket as well as playground and a great soccer area just behind the house. Whenever we had to organise something the kids just climbed over the wall and were free to do what ever they liked... even inside the house were games and enough place tho have time for oneself. Mere is located perfect to visit a lot of lovely and very interesting places and villages too! I recommend this home absolutly! Thanks for our perfect time there!
