About Jacqui Thomas

I am a retired illustrator, mostly for children's books, desperately seeking the relaxed lifestyle I observe amongst my Italian friends and neighbours. Getting there, slowly!

I paint watercolours presently, a far cry from illustration. I feel confident to call myself 'a real artist' now as i am no longer having to meet agents, authors and publishers requirements and deadlines! I'm free!

I have a lovely dog, a little pointer called Molly. Very friendly. Loves everyone. Hopeless guard dog.

My son often stays here to help me with the bigger and heavier chores around the place. He's lovely too!

Jacqui Thomas purchased this farmhouse in 2001

Why Jacqui Thomas chose Acquapendente

I was looking to buy a smaller property across the border in Tuscany, but when I saw Montepozzo, that was it! The character of the house and the delightful wooded countryside provide a temperate microclimate in this relatively undiscovered area of central Italy. Within a couple of hours drive are Lake Bolsena, Orvieto, Rome, Apenine mountains, the Mediterranean, Siena, Florence, Assisi and Rome. But you don't have to travel any distance as there is lots to see and do locally to satisfy most appetites for good food, art and culture and all kinds of activities.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Podere Montepozzo is a spacious rural house set in 1.6 acres on a leafy mound in a temperate climate, enjoying panoramic views over beautiful countryside in the Alta Tuscia region of northern Lazio, with Tuscany and Umbria just minutes away. Ideal for a family, or two families wanting to holiday together whilst still having their own independent spaces. Ideal base for day trips to the cultural treasures and retail pleasures of Rome, Florence and Siena. Ideal location for a retreat or to explore the heritage, culture and charm of the locality. all around this area is rich in Etruscan history. Grotte de Castro, a small town nearby, was recently the subject of excavations and studies by Cambridge University because of the many recent finds from this period.

Guestbook comments from the manager

"A beautiful, spacious villa with everything we expected and more: simple but stylish interior with generous rooms, well equipped kitchen and shaded parking. Absolute tranquility, with lovely views in all directions. Plenty of outdoor space, including lovely pergola-shaded area where we ate most evenings (over several bottles of excellent local wine, purchased from the Coop 5 minutes drive away). Jacqui provided all the information we needed to make the most of our stay."

"A week was not enough, we would like to have stayed for longer… a delightful and comfortable house, and Jacqui was charming and helpful."

"We really enjoyed our stay at your lovely house, and will certainly recommend you to our friends. It really is a beautiful part of the world!"

"… we want to come back to Montepozzo again… it's so lovely."

Spacious house, lovely location and very friendly and welcoming hosts

  • 5 of 5

Located in a quiet country location, the only noise being bells on the local sheep! While you're in the middle of nowhere you are only a few kilometres from shops and lots of historic attractions. Our hosts did their upmost to ensure we had everything we needed to have a wonderful time, and the weather was excellent. We must especially mention Alex, who gave us a very friendly welcome and managed to sort out a couple of minor issues as they occurred, and a big thank you to Jacque, for the wine and card to help us celebrate our special anniversary. We would recommend this to others

Splendid

  • 4 of 5

We found this a wonderful place to stay. The house has a great deal of character in a rural area but within a short driving distance to the small but interesting town of Aquapendente. The hostess ,Jacque, was very friendly and helpful, and the facilities were excellent.Sitting in the garden under the grape vined terrace on the South side was especially delightful. I would thoroughly recommend this villa to anyone who likes to have a quality holiday in a wonderful area with the proviso that a car is an essential ingredient.

The neighbouring hill towns were wonderful, historic places to visit. Altogether a successful holiday.

Location

Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

Lake Bolsena is about 8 miles to the south and offers small resorts, beaches, boating and swimming. The Mediterranean coast is about an hour away and offers resorts and secluded beaches.

Travel:

Rome's Fiumicino and Ciampino airports are about 2 hours drive, as is Perugia.

Nearest train station is Orvieto, about 35 minutes drive; trains to Rome and Florence and beyond are frequent and can be cheap.

A car is essential and rental agents such as Hertz, Avis etc are located near the station in Orvieto and of course at the airports.

Distances:

Acquapendente is about 3 miles; 5 miles to Monte Rufeno nature reserve for studying, walking, cycling, horse riding; five miles to Lake Bolsena for swimming, boating, resorts; Mediterranean resorts about an hour away; Florence, Sienna and Rome within about two hours. The town of Bolsena, site of the Miracle of Corpus Christi, is 8 miles. Orvieto, the stunning city built on 150m high cliffs, is 35 minutes. Tuscany and Umbria within 5 miles.

Further Details:

Acquapendente is a bustling market town. It offers a surprising mix of chic boutiques, restaurants and cafes, two theatres and a cinema. For the daily essentials there are a number of good supermarkets including Coop and Spa. even a small hospital with a minor injuries unit. For the best local produce you will want to visit the many individual bakery, grocery, fruit and vegetable, meat, fish, cheese and pasta shops. There are also some very chic clothes and shoe shops. Restaurants from pizzerias to the more formal are very good value. Market day is Friday, but nearby towns hold markets on other days.

The town is famous for its annual Pugnaloni, a May festival of flower petal paintings, enormous canvases depicting creative interpretations of the theme of “freedom over oppression”, each designed and produced by competing groups of townsfolk, and paraded through the town in a colourful procession, culminating in a pageant of flag displays and the inevitable spontaneous fireworks in the evening. The Duomo or cathedral dates from the 10th century and the crypt contains a blood stained stone said to be a relic from the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Acquapendente curiously has a direct link with Canterbury in England, for through its centre runs the Via Francigena or Pilgrims Way which links Canterbury and Rome and is of course very popular with walkers and cyclists.

Throughout the year festivals of all kinds are held at Acquapendente and the other towns in the locality, so there’s often some lively local entertainment to be enjoyed.

The surrounding countryside is varied with wooded hills, rocky ravines, plateaus and plains and the huge Lake Bolsena which is about 6-8 miles across. Adjacent fields are currently sheep pasture; sunflowers and vegetable crops are also grown locally. And olive and vine of course!
