Coach House in Mere, Wiltshire, England (near Dorset and Somerset borders) - Good Location For Day Trips To Surrounding Counties

Coach House is situated in the beautiful town of Mere, ideally located behind the medieval Castle Hill where Mere Castle once stood. With shops, pubs, parks and rolling countryside all within walking distance The Coach House is ideal for your holiday. Situated in the old part of the town our nearest pub is a 2 minute walk away, and a quick walk up Castle Hill will enable you to take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding three counties (Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset). There are many attractions within an hours drive from the property. Take a trip into Salisbury and visit one of England's best Cathedrals, or submerge yourself in the world of Austen by spending a day in Bath with its stunning Georgian Architecture and the famous Roman Baths. A 20 minute drive will take you to the impressive Longleat (and safari park), home to the Marquess of Bath, and there are numerous National Trust properties nearby, (the closest being Stourhead) - many of which have been used as film locations and all steeped in English history and charm.

SORRY - NO DOGS

The Coach House consists of kitchen, dining room, sitting room, downstairs w.c. and utility cupboard (washer/dryer) - upstairs there are two bedrooms (one double and one twin) and a bathroom with shower head attachment. Outside there is off road parking for one vehicle, a patio and a small fenced/gated garden. There is wifi at the property.

Originally from Shaftesbury we were looking for our first home together. When we bought Long Hill House no one had lived in the nearby coach house since the coachman and coach (mud floors, hayloft etc). It took us three years to extend and convert - and we love it!

The property was clean and well appointed. All appliances worked. Great and easy to use Wi-Fi

Owners were enthusiastic and provided recommendations for eating which turned out great : The George Inn for dinner, The Walnut Inn for breakfast, the Hillbrush factory for lunch, and a tour of the Stourhead Estate & Gardens. There were plenty of towels & linens. The TV with cable service was nice for late evening or morning news.

Lovely host and a lovely place

The place is really excellent, its situated in a nice environment.

The place has a small garden and a parking space for 1 car/van.

The 2 bed room cottage is very comfortable, a lively kitchen. When we arrived the whole place is very clean.

The heating system is very good, keeps the place very cozy.

The bedrooms are well done, with clean sheets and towels.

The host is very warming and made the holiday a special one.

We have missed the ferry and got ourself delayed, the host is very kind and help us alot.

Will come back again for sure.

A lovely property set in a picturesque village.

Overall the property was great, perfect for a smaller family wanting a base to explore the surrounding area. There was plenty of home comforts there which was a real positive. The owner Helen was really friendly, helpful and clearly knowledgeable of the area.

The bed/duvet could do with updating as we did not find these overly comfortable but this was really only a very minor negative point.

We had a great few days there and our two young boys really enjoyed themselves, we would certainly go back if it wasn't for a third child, which is due imminently, five would be a squeeze for sure.

Precious Little Gem

We very much enjoyed our stay at Coach House. It was ideally located to reach all the places we wanted to see, such as Winchester, Wells, Bath, and Salisbury. The house is very well equipped and the off-road parking is a definite plus. Even if you do not want to stray far, there are nice little walks up Castle Hill and a shop and pubs in the village. Our hostess had valuable info for us and was very approachable while leaving us our space. The downstairs, with most of its windows facing north, can be a bit drafty in cold weather, but we would not hesitate to come back in the summer.

Own Car or Car hire is essential.

Train - Gillingham, Dorset 10min drive

Airport - Bristol - 1h15min drive

Distances:

It takes about 3 minutes to walk into Mere.

Gillingham is a 10 minute drive and Shaftesbury (Home of Gold Hill) is a 15 minute drive.

The Coach House is situated 5 minutes drive (3miles) from Stourhead House and Garden (National Trust) and about 25 minutes (16.5 miles) from Longleat.

Salisbury - 25 miles (35mins)

Yeovil - 28 miles (35mins)

Bath - 31 miles (50 mins)

Further Details:

In Mere there is a small supermarket (co-op), butcher, pharmacist, grocer (with fresh bread every Wednesday and Saturday) Lloyds Bank and Post Office

Indian restaurant, Chinese takeaway, Fish and Chips and Angel Corner Tea Rooms

There are four pubs.

For those who love fine wine Yapp Brothers is based in Mere and definitely worth a visit.
