About the property

Bed & Breakfast in Seferihisar-Izmir, Aegean Region, Turkey - Comfortable B&B In Peaceful Village. Surrounded By Hills, Short Drive To Sea And Historical Sites.

Tucked away in the narrow streets of Ulamis is the house of Monique and Aydin Gumus, and their dog Lucky. The guest house of their 100-year village farmhouse is located in the garden and has its own bedroom, sitting room and bathroom. Ulamis is a farming village that offers a glimpse of Turkey outside the tourist traps. Around the village, guests can hike or bike (two ATB’s available), venturing into the hills or down towards the seaside. The landscape is hilly and both for biking and hiking, one should come well-prepared! Especially for hikers, we have special tours on offer. Of course, there is also plenty for the more relaxed Turkey-enthusiast: the nearby fishing village of Sigacik with its fresh seafood, farmers’ market and lovely beaches. For those who like history, ancient Teos and Ephesus. Other ideas are tiny wine village Sirince, big Izmir or Kusadasi, or chartering a boat. Easily accessible by both public and private transport, Ulamis is ideal to explore the countryside, coastline, cities and historical sites of the Aegean.

About Monique Gumus-Boelman

We are a Turkish/Dutch couple and have been together for more than 10 years. Aydin is a former commando who, much to his own surprise, ended up as a bus-boy in Saudi Arabia. His career in tourism continued in N-Cyprus where he worked as a chef and later as head waiter. Helping out a friend in Kas, Aydin met Monique. The rest is, as we say, history. An early (lucky Turks) retired Aydin is now your host at Aydin’s Guest house. Together with Monique, he spent four years renovating the old farm house and is very happy to be back from building to hosting. He loves helping out guests with any requests regarding food, hiking, biking, daytrips, transport, etc. Monique works as a lecturer at an Izmir university and in her free time she just enjoys life, her husband and her pets.

Monique Gumus-Boelman purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Monique Gumus-Boelman chose Seferihisar

After 3 years together in Cyprus, we were looking for a place where Aydin could have a small b&b, and where Monique could have a house with a garden close to Izmir. When we saw this house, we knew we had found our dream spot. Quiet village, close to the sea, surrounded by hills, good public transport and totally rundown. The old stone house and barn have been totally stripped by Aydin and a few builder friends, and rebuilt using original materials according to our own ideas and standards for our home and guest accommodation. It is now a tastefully restored, very comfortable, unique property. The main attraction of living here in the village is for us the combination of the laid back Turkish atmosphere while being out in the country but close enough to the comforts of the big city.

What makes this cottage unique

Other attractions are the proximity to beaches, thermal waters, and the airport, the excellent public transport to Izmir and Seferihisar, and of course the wonderful climate here in the Aegean. Aydin loves his hiking and biking, while Monique enjoys coming home after work to a clean house, a lovely dinner (the advantage of having a chef as a husband) and a great dog. Together we enjoy discovering new places close to where we live, and meeting new people and hosting them at our guest house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The royal treatment we received was much more than we expected. Comfortable room with lots of privacy, and pleasant company. The meals were perfectly served, and tasted delicious. We have made reservations for next year! Ad en Paul

We just spent 5 days here and it’s the ideal place to rest after an exciting weekend in Istanbul. What a perfect place to enjoy the Turkish countryside. Aydin´s hospitality was far beyond our expectations. He’s helpful, knows his way around and serves fantastic food. You get great, great quality for a ridiculously low price. Lex Pauka

Be ready to be spoilt! The rooms are spacious with high wooden ceilings and the bathroom has a gorgeous rain shower (shampoo, soap, shower gel all included!). The food is organic, comes fresh from the farmers’ market and is made with lots of attention for detail. Aydin and Monique are great hosts who are always there when you need them. Mariel

Like paradise! Renate and Michael Fogarty

Notes on accommodation: Upon arrival in Aydin’s Guest House, there is a small welcome pack and an information booklet with tips on the Guest House, Ulamis and its surroundings. If guests prefer to stay ‘at home’ for lunch or dinner, a full menu is available. However, there are more than enough possibilities to eat out near the Guest House. Ulamis itself has an excellent Turkish pizza baker. Going further afield, it is only a few kilometres to the nearest town Seferihisar and its fishing village Sigacik. Guzelbahce with its famous ‘you buy it, we prepare it’ fish restaurants is just 14 km away. Outside: The Guest House has its own stone terrace that sits within the garden of the main house with a traditional Turkish seating corner, sun beds, a breakfast corner and BBQ. Two adult size ATB bikes are available for you to discover the surroundings, together with a number of detailed routes for hiking or biking. Two adult size helmets and back pack can also be provided.

Perfect host

  • 5 of 5

Aydin was our perfect host during our stay in Ulamis, near Izmir. Very rich Turkish breakfast with more than you can wish for. Great advice on what to do and where to go. Lots of privacy in the separate gardenhouse. Quiet but central spot from where you can go to beaches, Izmir, farmers markets, exhumations Ephesis and Teos, artists village Sirince, fishing village Sigacik. Just rent a car at Izmir airport and you can also take a ride through the hills. And if you can't resist the food on the local markets, just take them to Aydin and he will make you a beautiful diner. If you want with good English conversation. We booked six nights. Too short!

Sigacik is one of Turkey’s top windsurfing centres. The Sigacik blue flag beaches with their clear turquoise waters and windsurf centre are only 12 km from Aydin’s Guest House. Quiet secluded Azmak beach is just 8 km away. The area is also renowned for its thermal springs and mineral waters, making it a good location for sufferers of arthritis, skin diseases and other such illnesses.

Further Details:

Ulamis is a quiet, typical Turkish village with a few small grocery stores. It is 5 km from ‘Citta Slow’ Seferihisar where you can find an abundance of restaurants, banks, and supermarkets. Fishing village Sigacik offers swimming, surfing and diving facilities. Only 75 km south from Ulamis are the ruins of Ephesus, the most impressive historical site in Turkey, the House of the Virgin Mary and the cave of the Seven Sleepers. Also worthwhile is the small town of Sirince, one hundred years ago deserted by its Greek inhabitants, and famous for its quality fruit wines and narrow streets that wind up and down the hills. Finally, Izmir (ancient Smyrna) is located just 35 km from Ulamis. A great city, both in size and history, that has lots to offer, including a high quality thermal spa!
