I moved to France with my daughter in 2005 to get away from the rat race but also to hopefully give us a better quality of family life with the added advantage to my daughter that she would be bi-lingual. It is lovely and peaceful here but we also have a nice circle of friends both French and English. We love our animals and have a dog Alma (9) who is very gentle and everyone falls in love with. Troy, a Shire cross 17hh gentle giant and two cats Smudge and Toby who you don’t see very often. We care about our gite guests and if there is anything we can help them with we will. We do a BBQ on arrival so that we can welcome our guests and tell them about the area. Nothing is too much trouble. If we can help you further please do not hesitate.
Alison Benn purchased this farmhouse in 2005
We bought our house here as we loved the location and the peace and tranquillity but also we can go to Fougeres or St Hilaire du Harcourt, Rennes and be amidst the fabulous architecture in 20 mins. Rennes is lovely but is about 1 hour away. It is easy for us to get back to the UK if we need to by flying from Dinard to either Leeds/Bradford, Stanstead or East Midlands with Ryanair.
The ferry ports are easily accessible. About 2 hours from Caen, Cherbourg, St Malo.
We live here permanently so everything is home from home and care has been taken in all the decorations to make it feel really cosy.
The properties are convenient for all amenities and during the Summer there is so much for families to do but also the costs are not astronomical as in the UK
We love having guests and that is something that everyone has re-iterated in their comments.
This was our third summer visit and was every bit as enjoyable and totally relaxing as all of the others. There is just something about this area and the cottage that makes you slow down and relax. The bbq on arrival is brilliant, no nonsense cooking on your first night! The welcome pack of croissants juice, milk and cake are a lovely touch and very much appreciated. We enjoyed revisiting the cider museum, and the castle at Fougeres, and acrabranching in Gorron. We are still finding new things to see and do, one of this years finds was the Roman museum in Jubliens, a great museum and we were lucky that they were doing a re enactment of village life on site. My husband's midlife crisis involves two wheels, he loves cycling in this area, finding lots of different routes whilst we lie in, or read in the lovely garden. There really is so much to see and do just a car ride away, castles, medieval towns, river walks, rando rails, beaches (lake, and a bit further the sea), churches, markets.... Alison is a mine of information and always willing to share local knowledge. We love the friendliness, the chilled laid back atmosphere, the peace and quiet, the welcome, thanks for another relaxing holiday!
This was our third visit to La Grande Gennerie with our children who are now aged 12 and 14. As always there was a very friendly welcome from Alison, Harriet and all the animals. Having the welcome pack (croissants, milk, juice, a quiche, etc.) and barbeque means you don't have rush off shopping soon after you get there. On the first evening we went to the nearby music festival which was packed with local people of all ages. It was a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere and yet another new French experience for us all. As always Alison suggested lots of things to do (there are different things to do every year) and we enjoyed seeing all the local arts and crafts at the Jardins des Renaudies, as well as watching the crazy but fun rafting race on the local river. It was great to go back to the favourites too: Jean Louis at the Ferme Auberge and the acro-branching at Gorron which had been improved yet again. It was also great to just relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings chatting and catching up with Alison and Harriet.
Thanks again Alison and Harriet for another great week.
We had a fantastic stay at La Grande Gennerie. We were enthusiastically welcomed on our first evening by Alison (the owner) and her daughter Harriet (and the other four legged residents!) and made to feel at home straight away. Alison and Harriet provided the first evening's dinner by BBQ and a wonderful welcome pack included homemade quiche and chocolate cake as well as essentials such as croissants for the next day's breakfast and tea/coffee & milk.
The house is was comfortable, functional and rustic. We were looking for somewhere to use as a base for the week mainly to sleep and cook and it met our needs well. We were pleased with how cool it stayed even on warmer days meaning we always slept incredibly well.
Our 2 boys (8 & 10) enjoyed our activities (often recommended by Alison who was wonderful to have telling us about everything going on) as much as we did. They especially enjoyed the day out 'acrobranching', the medieval jousting at Domfront and the day at the theme park. We enjoyed too the Fougeres Castle and evening concert and the evening meal with local farmer Jean Louis was a highlight for everyone!
Thank you Alison and Harriet for a wonderful fun packed holiday!
If you love noise and bright lights then this may not be the place for you....if however you are looking for peace, tranquility and being able to see a million stars in beautiful countryside look no further. That is not to say that there is not plenty to see and do just a short car ride away, during our two weeks we visited Chateau, a Cider farm, and beautiful churches, we cycled, walked, Rando Railed, swam and kayaked in lakes and our children (11 and 13) loved the treetop adventure in Gorron and small theme park in Ange Michel. Alison was most hospitable, suggesting lots of things to do that I'm sure that we would have otherwise missed, and to arrive to a cooked meal after a days journey was wonderful. The cottage is comfortable and spacious and provided us with everything we needed. This was our second visit, and I'm sure it will not be our last as again we left feeling totally relaxed...
I thoroughly recommend the cottages to families and couples wanted a quiet relaxing get away from it all holiday.
Alison the owner along with her daughter Harriet made our stay very comfortable and was always on hand to help and give information.
We were especially grateful with the Barbeque that awaited us on our arrival and thought it was very hospitable and thoughtful.
Loved Alba the dog who was very friendly and also the horse who used to wander around the garden. The cottages are well equipped and cater for all your home from home needs.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would certainly visit again in the future
We had a brilliant fortnight at Le Grande Gennarie which began with a very warm welcome from Alison and Harriet. It's not often you arrive to lasagne, scrummy chocolate cake AND a vegetable flan for later! Not often you find a friendly horse peering in through the window either!!
The house was comfortable with the bonus of English television. Mayenne is a delightful area and Alison's local knowledge was a huge asset. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it most highly. Many thanks, Alison and Harriet and not forgetting Alma, the dog. You made our holiday very enjoyable.
