I moved to France with my daughter in 2005 to get away from the rat race but also to hopefully give us a better quality of family life with the added advantage to my daughter that she would be bi-lingual. It is lovely and peaceful here but we also have a nice circle of friends both French and English. We love our animals and have a dog Alma (9) who is very gentle and everyone falls in love with. Troy, a Shire cross 17hh gentle giant and two cats Smudge and Toby who you don’t see very often. We care about our gite guests and if there is anything we can help them with we will. We do a BBQ on arrival so that we can welcome our guests and tell them about the area. Nothing is too much trouble. If we can help you further please do not hesitate.
Alison Benn purchased this cottage in 2005
We bought our house here as we loved the location and the peace and tranquillity but also we can go to Fougeres or St Hilaire du Harcourt, Rennes and be amidst the fabulous architecture in 20 mins. Rennes is lovely but is about 1 hour away. It is easy for us to get back to the UK if we need to by flying from Dinard to either Leeds/Bradford, Stanstead or East Midlands with Ryanair.
The ferry ports are easily accessible. About 2 hours from Caen, Cherbourg, St Malo.
We live here permanently so everything is home from home and care has been taken in all the decorations to make it feel really cosy.
The properties are convenient for all amenities and during the Summer there is so much for families to do but also the costs are not astronomical as in the UK
We love having guests and that is something that everyone has re-iterated in their comments.

Thank you for your wonderful hospitality during our stay with you. It truly felt like home away from home. We are very sad to be leaving and will miss all of you. We have had a fantastic holiday and look forward to seeing you again in the future.
Martin, Anna and family - July 2014
We've had a lovely week here, practical and homely accomodation, user friendly garden. Thanks for your helpful advise, your generosity and your company. We could easily have stayed for another week and will certainly keep La Grande Gennerie in our favourites section.
Billy, Ella and family - August 2014
We've had a really great week here. The accomodation was perfect for our family of 5 and we've had lots of fun having a go at all the games etc on offer. We couldnt have felt more welcome and we've enjoyed spending evenings in the sunshine having a chat with you both. Our stay has passed very quickly but we feel we've managed to explore the area well - our favourites being the castle at Fougeres, Ange Michel was great fun (where we could all be kids again) and we enjoyed our stroll round the village.
We really had the most amazing holiday with Alison, who is the perfect host. We were made most welcome and certainly feel like we made new friends. The accommodation is comfortable and well located in the most tranquil and beautiful French countryside. Our young children loved the garden, swimming pool and the company of Troy the horse, Alma the dog, the cats and of course our neighbours in the adjoining Gite. The Gite is located close to the village where we cycled for our morning baguettes and the locals were so friendly. There was so much to do and see and Alison was able to give us all the advice that we needed. A perfect spot for a peaceful and perfect family holiday. Thank you!
We stayed for 7 nights and loved every minute of it. Alison could not have been more helpful; laying on a barbecue for us on arrival along with essentials in the fridge to get us settled in. The cottage was delightfully decorated and perfect for the four of us. We spent much of our stay hanging out in the garden with Troy and Alma, enjoying the pool especially.
Alison helped us to arrange activities during the days too. One of the most interesting things she told us about was a honey festival nearby in a beautiful garden This featured a market of local fruit and vegetables, honey (and honey-making), butter making and a Maize maze!
It was part of our daily routine to walk to the local shop for croissants in the morning which was nice and it was very pleasant to experience the rural environment this way.
Carelles was also a convenient location as a base for exploring the nearby towns such as Fougeres.
All in all, a great holiday and great place to stay.
We have had a very relaxing week in Carelles! The cottage has 2 bedrooms with en-suite facilities which was just perfect for 2 adults and 2 teenage daughters! Alison welcomed us with a BBQ and a very nice bottle of red wine. The large garden offered many opportunities for our daughter to play with the younger children from the family staying next door. The swimming pool was just as welcome as the playhouse and feeding Troy (the horse) with apples or playing with Alma (the dog). The high-light of our week was our visit to the magnificent castle at Fougeres - the biggest medieval castle in Europe (or so they claim). We also went kayaking on the Mayenne river, enjoyed some walks, went fishing nearby and also used the Velo-Rail at Saint-Loup-du-Gast. Ben and family, August 2016.
As you will find out from the visitors book if you make the sensible choice and book to stay with Alison and Harriet, everyone has a wonderful time here. From the moment we arrived (early, so Alison opened a bottle of wine for us which we enjoyed in the top garden while she and Harriet finished preparing the gite) to the tearful 5am departure (yes, they both and another friend, got up especially to wave us off!) we have never felt so welcomed anywhere on holiday before. You cannot go wrong if you choose to stay here - warm, friendly, relaxed, with plenty to occupy children of all ages. Acrobranching, kayaking and a day on the beach were shared with Alison, Harriet and our new friends David, Alison, Fiona and Rhiannon plus Andy, Sara, Joseph, Jacob and James (hi all!). Luke (15) got on so well with Harriet and the other children, it just made the whole holiday for him. Helen and I loved Bagnoles de L'Orne. We all enjoyed the meal at Jean Louis's - good food and great company, an absolute must for the whole experience. Everyone else has mentioned the cake, quiche, welcome pack and BBQ on arrival so I almost forgot! Thank you Alison and Harriet for a wonderful week😄 Martin, Helen and Luke (Cornwall)
Alison and Harriet are supernatural hosts. They gave us a welcome pack of essentials when we arrived which included an enormous homemade chocolate cake and provided a BBQ, so you don't need to worry about catering on the first night. We went with our children aged 3 and 1. Our 3 year old is a bit shy but he loved Alison and both she and Harriet were excellent with the boys. There's tonnes to do in the area and Alison is very helpful at giving you information about what to visit etc. The give had all the essentials you need for a family holiday including a washing machine and dishwasher. Alison even dug out some of Hariet's old toys for the boys to play with, which was lovely. Not that they needed them. The give is situated down a lane and there are windows overlooking the yard and garden, so we just opened the door in the morning and let the boys out. Knowing they were happy and safe. They absolutely loved Troy the horse, Alma the dog, the chickens and cat, to say nothing of the trampoline and swing. We all had a lovely time. It really is a great family holiday destination.
We've just returned from a 12 night stay in this property and didn't want to come home! Alison and Harriet made us feel completely at home and couldn't do enough for us - from the welcome BBQ to giving directions. The gite was warm and cosy and we felt like we'd landed in heaven! We arrived as guests but left as friends!
