Attractive cottage close to sea

Cottage in Ardfern, Lochgilphead, Scotland - Peaceful Sheltered Location With Stunning Sea Views 5 Minutes Away

Craignish Lodge is a pretty Victorian gate lodge to Craignish Castle with a fenced garden and parking in a sheltered position but with the sea close by on all sides. The cottage has been completely refurbished in 2012. The village of Ardfern has an excellent village shop with a post office as well as the Crafty Kitchen, a delightful café offering fine food and gifts. The local hotel, the Galley of Lorne, offers liquid refreshment as well as bar meals and a restaurant overlooking the water. Ardfern Yacht Centre has a marina as well as a chandlery, and offers boat trips from here to the Corryvrekan whirlpool and to local islands to observe wildlife. Lunga Riding Centre, a couple of miles away in the neighbouring Lunga Estate, offers trekking, western riding and lessons on their Appaloosa horses. Almost opposite the cottage is a ruined chapel of Kilmarie, dating from the 13th century, with a collection of standing stones and a beautiful view across to Ardfern marina.

About the Owner

Hi! I am Virginia Bird and I live north of London with my husband and, sometimes, two daughters. We love Scotland and are hoping to retire to Ardfern. However, with daughters at university this is still a few years away, and so we decided to invest in a cottage to see if we really wanted to live in Scotland. Hence the purchase of Craignish Lodge a couple of years ago. Whilst we are still both working we obviously don't get up to Scotland as much as we can, although living next to Luton airport does mean that we can get there for a weekend without too much difficulty. We wanted to share the property with other people and cover some of the costs of owning a second property.

Location

From the Owner

We have been holidaying on the West Coast of Scotland for 10 years and have really enjoyed getting to know the area through sailing and renting holiday cottages. Over the years we have especially fallen in love with Ardfern, with the dramatic scenery of the area and the amazing seascapes and sunsets. We often attend the summer art festival and enjoy the cafe and pub in the village. When Craignish Lodge came up for sale a couple of years ago we fell in love with it, both the cottage itself and the location. It soon became apparent that we needed to invest in improvements, and after a year we knew what we wanted; a complete change around so that the kitchen diner became the focus of the downstairs, and an old pantry, bathroom and corridor turned into a wonderful sitting room. We love it!

Facilities

From the Owner

The property is very peaceful and sheltered with the benefit of neighbours but not too close! It is convenient for the village but also for walks and water activities. It has the feeling of history with the castle just down the road, and wonderful views to the Paps of Jura. We just love it; the wood burning stove means that it is very cosy even in the cooler months of the year, and I find that the kitchen and utility room are better than mine at home, because I was able to design the Lodge as I wanted it to be. I love having the shower downstairs as I can come in straight from swimming, biking or running and jump in the shower without the worry of wet or muddy feet! The garden is delightful, very established, and if the sun is shining you can find a sunny and sheltered spot!

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The Lodge stands alone but with neighbours nearby. We had been coming to the area for 10 years before we bought the Lodge and love the village of Ardfern, with its eclectic community of artists, farmers, locals and English, all mixing very well and with a vibrant sense of community. There is always something going on. The Lodge is very peaceful and there is a sense of history at this end of the peninsula with stunning views across to Jura and Crinan. The sunsets are amazing, and there are several walks directly from the cottage with superb views. The property benefits from good parking (2/3 cars), a shed for bikes, garden on three sides including a fenced area. It looks across to the ruined chapel of Kilmarie, dating from the 13th century, with a collection of standing stones and a beautiful view across to Ardfern marina. Outside: There are two garden areas, one fenced, as well as a courtyard. There is a shed where visitors can store bikes. Utility Room: There is a large utility room with a washing machine and drying racks as well as an iron and ironing board. This is a great area to keep all the outdoor kit, and a space for that wet kit to go on the odd occasion it rains in Scotland! Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included and changed weekly. The property is cleaned weekly. Other: There is a sun room with wicker chairs that is great for afternoon tea, and for maximising the sunlight hours when its a little cooler outside. The furniture in here can be taken outside for use in the courtyard on sunny days.
