About the Owner

To live near the sea was a must for us. We first met in Plymouth, and in summer, it was a short walk from our offices to The Hoe for a swim at lunch times. Together, working overseas for some twenty five years the sea was never far away – from Mombasa to the Middle East on the island of Bahrain, Doha in Qatar, Jumeirah in Dubai and then Muscat in Oman with an apartment overlooking the beach on the Gulf of Oman. Now here on the outskirts of Rye, Oaklands faces the sea towards Rye Bay which is just over two miles distance. We have run a B&B here since June 2004 gaining a 5* Gold award from Visit Britain but in October 2014 closed this side of the business, whilst continuing to run The Mews studio apartment which we built in 2008 replacing an old garage and stable block.

Weekend Stay I came here with my partner for an extended weekend and felt lucky to find the Mews as I was struggling for self catering accommodation suitable for two people in Rye. The Mews was perfect and very comfortable, modern and tastefully decorated. Will be recommending the Mews to our friends and would love to stay again. Claire and Chris - Beckenham 1 to 4 January 2012

Fantastic The Mews studio is wonderful, beautifully decorated and impeccably maintained. The Mews is walking distance into Rye but still in the country so you are surrounded by beautiful fields and farmland with new lambs running around. The large gardens have seats and cobbled areas to sit outside. Grant and Andrea - Kensal Green 6 to 8 April 2012

Top class property This was our 3rd visit to the Mews at Oaklands. Most self-catering facilities are however tied to weekly rentals. The Mews is flexible which is more convenient. It is spacious, well equipped and overlooks the lovely countryside. There are good walks in the countryside or to nearby Rye. Highly recommended. George and Volia - Durbanville, South Africa 8 to 11 May 2012

Something rather special This was our 2nd visit to the Mews. Having stayed in a few places in Rye, the Mews is the one that we will return to again. The standard of the accommodation is superb, spotlessly clean, beautifully furnished, modern, extremely comfortable and relaxing and lovely views across the fields to the sea. Leonard and Anne - Tonbridge 31 Dec to 2 January 2013

Fantastic, especially great for self catering if you have a young baby We wanted a short break soon after the birth of our first baby, to get out of the house! Somewhere, so as not to worry waking anyone else. The Mews was brilliant; we could eat there in the evenings, go at our own pace, and not disturb anyone. Excellent accomodation.

The hosts were very welcoming but not intrusive.

A welcome pack with some delicious bread helped us settle in.

Nights were comfortable in the king size bed.

We found the accommodation very clean and well ordered with everything one needs.

The access to the property is easy with a good car parking space.

We would certainly stop here again when planning a visit to the south east.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in the Mews.

Tony and Diane were very welcoming, and we really appreciated the freshly baked loaf of bread on arrival.

The accommodation is excellent. It is modern, well maintained and very comfortable.

We would not hesitate to recommend.

From the Owner

Oaklands' setting is picture perfect, with views at the front to the sea, views at the rear across the Tillingham valley towards Peasmarsh and farmland all around. The ancient town of Rye with its cobbled streets, curio shops, taverns and tea rooms, several galleries displaying the work of local sculptors, painters and photographers, is just over a mile away by footpath, or a bit longer taking a rural footpath through fields and meadows. Nearby are the Nature Reserve at Rye Harbour and beaches at Camber Sands and Winchelsea whilst further afield are Hastings and Battle, Bodiam Castle, gardens at Great Dixter, Pashley Manor and Sissinghurst, Batemans (home of Rudyard Kipling) and much more. With our book of Guest's reviews' of local pubs and restaurants we can advise on many places to eat.
