About the property

Villa between S.B de Messines and Silves, Central Algarve, Portugal - Beaches Are Just 30 Mins Drive, 3 Golf Courses Are 15 Mins, 3 Water Parks 20 Mins

The villa was completed to a very high standard in 2009. It has underfloor heating throughout and all rooms have air conditioning and double glazing, with secure lockable shutters and windows, entry video phone and remote control gates. Terraces and floors are tiled throughout. The infinity pool has underwater lighting and all terraces can be illuminated at night. The 3/4 acre garden has been newly planted with Mediterranean plants, lawn, and fruit trees. The village is at the top of the hill with British neighbours 50 yards away on either side of the villa. Surrounded by citrus groves, fig, almond, and carob trees, the village of Torre has one little bar/cafe, whilst all the surrounding villages have friendly country restaurants, where the dishes of the day are good and remarkably cheap. The resorts of Gale, Amarcao do Pera, Carvoeiro, and Ferragudo are all a short drive, other resorts a little further but easily accessible. The beautiful Monchique mountain can be seen from the villa.

About Chris Cartwright

Chris and Chris Cartwright, the owners of Casa Algazarra, fell in love with the Algarve as far back as 1988 when they used to take their three children there for holidays. They found the portuguese very friendly and accomodating, and they love children.

They are now retired and live in rural South Cambridgeshire. Christopher was a Graphic Designer and ran his design and print business for 43 years. After their hectic lifestyle the peace and tranquil beauty of the countryside around Casa Algazarra was just what they wanted.

Chris Cartwright purchased this villa in 2009

Why Chris Cartwright chose Silves region

Chris and Chris had the villa built by a reputable portuguese firm, so that they could incorporate all the features they thought important for comfortable living all the year round.

The fabulous views, fine weather, and flora and fauna are what attracted them to the area. With easy access to the coast, with its wonderfully clean beaches, shops, historical monuments and all the facilities of modern living, they think they have chosen the ideal spot for their home in the sun.

A Cut Above the Rest

  • 5 of 5

This was our first shot at Portugal, as we have a house in the south-west of France and are often too lazy to venture further. The Portuguese are delightful and there is a nice mix between locals and visitors in the restaurants we visited. Everywhere we visited, the locals were most hospitable and there was a really positive attitude, not driven by money like some areas of Southern France. The house is on a beautiful site, looking down the valley towards Silves in the far distance – a magic view particularly towards dusk and at night. The infinity pool has this as a view, which is (although I hate the word) stunning.

The house has a special ambience and each bedroom is private and secluded, overlooking the garden. We were in Bedroom 2. Chris’s career as graphic designer has informed the design, layout and decoration of the house but his true love is gardening and he has done a beautiful job at Casa Algazarra, mixing domestic plants and imports. It is worth visiting the house for the garden alone.

The bathrooms are frankly luxurious and both bedrooms and living areas are spacious, cool, tasteful and unfussy – but not minimalist! The kitchen has loads of space and having a lazy breakfast on the terrace is a very easy experience with the layout. From memory, the terraces faces southwest so one is not overburdened by sun and it makes for beautiful sunsets.

The house is perfect for one or two families, as well as people like us who might occasionally like to splash out and enjoy the peaceful silence. If you do rent, look after the place as it deserves this care - but Chris & Chrissie love people and are very considerate and reasonable owners.

A 'Must Stay' villa

  • 5 of 5

Picture a balmy night, with a very good glass of local wine, under the stars and the only sounds are the gentle lapping of the water in the pool and ciccadas softly 'singing' (is that what they do?).

The country location also guarantees wonderful starlight, unaffected by light pollution, as you wind down after a stressful day sunbathing, sampling the local restaurants and watching dozens of birds circling over the near-by hills.

The villa is simply stunning; immaculately decorated and appointed with views that have to be seen to be believed, stretching from the coast on the horizon down a broad fertile valley, to the left and the mountains to the right.

The coastal villages and restaurants are buzzing and varied and lively enough for younger visitors but I urge you to find the smaller inland villages whose small local restaurants have wonderful food at incredible prices - a Cataplana is a must.

I highly recommend this villa and its fabulous location without reserve and cannot wait to go back again.

Casa Algazara - A Cut Above...

  • 5 of 5

Where to start with the stunning property. From the infinity style pool to the amazing views over the valley.

The whole villa is excellently presented throughout and easily accommodated 3 adults and 3 children on our 10-day trip.

Everyone in our party really enjoyed our lazy days by the pool. The villa is situated just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of day to day life to allow a very chilled and tranquil retreat. So much so that this was the 1st year we missed out the water park for another day by the pool!

Perfectly situated for nearby towns such as Silves with it's many restaurants and shops.

We've been on many villa holidays in the past but mainly with James Villas, this was our 1st "go" with owners direct and we will definitely be trying them again. As will we this specific villa, it was beautiful and the whole process was flawless from booking to leaving. Very well thought out.

Thanks to Chris and Chrissie and their hosts in Portugal Richard and Wendy.

We will all see you again.

And you, reading this, it was that good so book it, book it now!

From the Owner

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

The Algarve is famous for its beautiful, clean and sandy beaches. The Atlantic ocean can be cold out of season. But the whole of the coast is easily accessible from the villa in under an hour. Cape St.Vincent, the furthest South Westerly part of Europe is 55 mins by car. The west coast is wilder and empty, very good for surfing and other water sports, and abounds with natural features and wildlife.

The nearest airport is Faro, which is 40 min by car from the villa. It is served by numerous airlines including Easyjet, Ryanair, Monarch Airlines, British Airways and TAP among others. Most airports in Britain are connected to Faro. Lisbon or Seville airports are approx. 2 hours away. Car hire is readily available from the airports. There are railway services to Silves and S B de Messines and bus and taxi services throughout the Algarve. We would recommend hiring a car for your stay.

Sao Bartholomeu de Messines is 6 Km from the villa, Silves c.12 Km. At both locations you will find banks, supermarkets, shops, pharmacies, health centres, bars, restaurants and a market under cover every day, and larger markets outside once a month. Portimao, one of the larger towns is c.16 Km with a hospital and a shopping mall. Algarve shopping which has a Multiplex cinema is located at Guia on the N125. Archeological remains and attractive historical villages to explore are close by.

You will find lots of information and maps in the villa.
