Restored Winemakers Homes In Picturesque Hamlet in heart of Minervois wine area - La Maison des Barriques

Updated: 08-Jul-2016
Beautifully restored wine makers homes offering luxury accommodation for 4 people

La Maison des Barriques and La Petite Maison have been created from an old winery. The property has been transformed and lovingly renovated to a high standard, giving fabulous contemporary interiors. Being an Interior Designer every detail has been considered, mixing old with new, to provide warm, spacious and light interiors. Entrance to La Maison des Barriques is via a winding stone staircase onto the terrace which looks out over the village to the vineyards beyond. Paguignan, which nestles in the foothills of the Montagne Noire and just 30km from the Mediterranean, is a quiet hamlet with winding alleyways, an ancient chapel, a small tree lined square and evidence of more prosperous times. Within two minutes walk from the front door you are among the vineyards. This is a land of vineyards, wine and good food, perfumed garrigue, Cathar castles, abbeys, walks, rivers for fishing and swimming and colourful markets with fresh local produce.

Nearest Airport : Carcassonne and Beziers are both approx. at 30 Miles Nearest Train : Narbonne at 17 Miles Nearest Motorway : A9 at 18 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Le Cagarol in Aigne pretty on a little square at 3 Miles Nearest Beach : Gruissan Plage on the Mediterranean at 25 Miles Car: necessary

LA MAISON DES BARRIQUES & LA PETITE MAISON are the perfect retreats for those wishing to enjoy Mediterranean France, to soak up the atmosphere, to bathe in the sun, to visit the Cathar Castles or to explore the stunning landscape . A paradise for painters, walkers (and strollers) and cyclists. Just 2 minutes from the front door you are among the vineyards or in the garrigue with its intoxicating smell of wild rosemary, thyme and lavender.

THIS IS A LAND OF CONTRASTS between the gentle sandy coast with coastal lagoons, where you must go and see the flamingos, and the more luscious plain of the river Aude where cherries, apricots and olives grow, and where the Canal du Midi meanders serenely .

AIGUES VIVES: 2km from Paguignan or a 10 minute bike ride has a Utile mini market (rather like a Spar), Post Office and two restaurants. A general stores van calls weekly in the village.

CANAL du MIDI: Perfect for walking and cycling and where you can stop off at a canal side cafe or restaurant, particularly at La Someil,

and watch life on the canal, or even take a boat trip along the canal.

HISTORY: A must is to visit some of the many spectacular Cathar castles such as Lastours or Peyrepertuse and abbeys or the Cathar village of Minerve perched on a rock between two gorges ( 15 Minutes from Paguignan ) and Carcassonne with its remarkable Medieval fortress - one of Europe's best preserved walled cities. Roman Narbonne and circulade villages such as Aigne

( 5 minutes ).

MARKETS: Nearly every day you can visit a colourful market with fresh local produce, and much more, within 15kms/10 miles. Very atmospheric.

SWIMMING & BEACHES: Paguignan, which nestles in the foothills of the Montagne Noire is just 45 minutes drive from the Mediterranean with its long golden sandy beaches. There is Wild Swimming in the river at Biz-Minervois just 10 minutes by car. During the summer a large pool is created in the river and further up the river you can swim in some rocky pools with a small shingle area. Fabulous for all ages. Quite special. At the Lac Jouarres there is swimming and sailing and an open grassed area surrounded by trees. A perfect family spot and just a 20 minute drive. There are more wild swimming places further afield all loved by my family and the grandchildren.

RESTAURANTS: There are a number of very good restaurants within 10/15 minutes from Paguignan where you can have amazing French food at very reasonable prices particularly at mid-day Details of all these can be found in the house.
