About the Owner

I moved to Keswick in 2008 with my husband and three children, and we have never looked back!

Previously a lecturer, editor and museums professional, I now look after the children and this holiday house, with a few bits of translating and editing work in between.

My intention has been to create a holiday home of the kind I would like to stay in myself: comfortable, uncluttered and calm, in a great location and with that rare commodity, pure cotton sheets!

very nice house close to the town centre.

  • 4 of 5

Eight of us stayed over a long weekend. The four bedrooms were all nice and the two bathrooms worked well. Having a lounge and dining room gave us plenty of space and the kitchen is very well equipped with large cooker, dishwasher and washing machine. The house was nice and clean and all the towels and linen were provided and good quality.

The on street parking is unrestricted but quite busy although we managed to get all four cars close to the house. Being close to the centre of Keswick is great. Definitely would stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your nice comments and for taking the time to write a detailed review, which I'm sure will be helpful to other guests. Parking is quite busy in Keswick it's true, on the plus side there are many streets in the immediate vicinity which have unrestricted parking so you can find somewhere, even if it's not right outside the house. Thank you for staying at Borrowdale House, and it would be wonderful to have you back.

We loved Borrowdale House!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved Borrowdale House in every way. It was super clean, spacious, quiet, and in a great location. We enjoyed meals at the large dining table, made in the well-equipped kitchen, and then moved to the lounge room to read and talk. Our boys especially appreciated having their own rooms. We all slept well every night we stayed. We made use of the laundrette just three doors down, which was super convenient for drying clothes after washing them at the house. Borrowdale is an easy walk to town, to church and to the boat launch.

Jocelyn was a lovely hostess. She provided tons of information about Keswick, even dropping off special maps and books for our boys, ages 6 and 9. We would highly recommend this place to everyone and hope to be back ourselves one day.

Lovely House

  • 5 of 5

We had a super holiday staying at Borrowdale House (myself, my husband and 3 children aged 6, 10 and 12). The house is beautifully presented, stylish, very well equipped and spacious. We especially liked the open fire and the comfortable beds (best nights sleep ever)! We would highly recommend Borrowdale House. You will not be disappointed!

Fabulous New Years in keswick

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed seeing in 2014 in Keswick, borrowdale house was well equipped and spacious for 7 adults for a week and within a quick and easy walk of Keswick town centre. Jocelyn, the owner was easy to contact from pre-booking to during out stay and answered all our questions. We enjoyed the open fire and found after a days walking (in the rain of course) that this was the perfect way to relax! The beds were comfy and all the bedroom tastefully decorated and clean! I can see that the house would work for a family with children too. We hope to return to borrowdale house in the future.

Owner's Response: Dear Becky, Thank you very much for your kind words, and I'm really glad that you enjoyed your stay in Keswick. One of my priorities when I set up the house was to make sure guests would have a good night's sleep on their holiday, with good beds, lofty duvets and cotton sheets - so it's always nice to hear this has been effective! It's good to know the log fire is being enjoyed, too. Thank you for celebrating New Year at Borrowdale House, I'm glad it was a good one! Jocelyn

Location

From the Owner

We found we were constantly coming to the Lake District ourselves whenever we could get time away and we loved Keswick especially. It is a lively town (with theatre and cinema), surrounded by the most dramatic mountains of the Lake District. This particular house is a fine example of the Victorian slate-fronted townhouses typical of the area, and we have kept all the original features we found: quarry-tiled porch, turned-wood banisters, decorative fireplaces in many rooms (one working) and the lovely pine doors. It is also warm and spacious, and we have not sub-divided any rooms. Keswick is the gateway to Borrowdale, one of the most beautiful places I know. It has ancient oak forests strewn with moss-covered rocks, a lovely river fed by numerous mountain streams, and is the starting point for so many amazing walks, whether you're climbing England's highest mountain or going for a stroll by the stunning lake, Derwentwater. The fell views all around are breathtaking. As well as all this, being in the centre of Keswick, with its market, shops, parks and restaurants, is extremely convenient.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Borrowdale House is approximately 30 minutes' drive to the nearest coastal town of Maryport (with Aquarium and pebble beach). The long, sandy beach at Allonby is approximately 45 minutes' drive and offers windsurfing and pony riding along the beach. The beautiful St Bees resort, with its sandy beach backed by impressive cliffs, is 50 minutes' drive. St Bees Head is home to a nature reserve with large colonies of sea birds, and is the start of the Coast to Coast long-distance footpath.

Travel:

The nearest airports are Blackpool (96 miles; 1 hour 50 drive); Manchester (123 miles; 2 hours 11 drive) and Newcastle (92 miles, 2 hours drive).

Alternatively, you can travel by overnight ferry from Amsterdam to Newcastle ferry port (99 miles; 2 hours 15) or from Rotterdam to Hull ferry port (168 miles, 3 hours 26 drive).

There are direct trains from Manchester airport to Penrith station (approx 2 hours), and a bus from Penrith station to Keswick.

A car is not needed for your stay.

Distances:

Dove Cottage near Grasmere, home of William Wordsworth, is 13 miles; 20 mins by car; 26 mins by Lakeslink bus, along one of the most scenic roads in England.

World of Beatrix Potter: 22 miles; 38 mins by car.

Hill Top (the home of Beatrix Potter): 24 miles; 47 mins by car.

Further Details:

There is plenty to do within walking distance from the house: exhilarating fell walks straight from the door or a leisurely stroll to beautiful Derwentwater, where you can hire a rowing boat or take a ferry cruise. There are numerous small pebble beaches along Derwentwater, where you can have a picnic and a paddle.

There are two lovely parks in Keswick including a fantastic playground, river walks and obstacle golf. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, two supermarkets, and even a cinema and theatre close at hand. For rainy days there are some interesting museums and a family-friendly leisure centre with swimming pool.

If you have time to venture further afield, a short journey by car, bus or boat will take you to countless more beautiful walks in the stunning Lakeland scenery, and we provide plenty of walk guides and maps in the house. Watersports, horseriding, and the Whinlatter forest centre with its mountain bike trails and adventure playground are all within easy reach.

Facilities

From the Owner

In Borrowdale House the emphasis is on a calm, relaxing and clean environment. This is why it is pet-free, decorated in calm colours, uncluttered, and has comfortable beds made up with pure cotton bedlinen. We love the location, being close to the centre of Keswick (about 5 minutes walk to the market square), yet on a peaceful street. At the same time there are many walks you can do from the front door, such as Walla Crag, Skiddaw and Latrigg. It is a traditional Victorian house built with local slate, and there are many original features inside including a real fire. There is plenty of baby and toddler equipment because we know from experience how helpful this can be. The solid, wooden beds are from the award-winning Warren Evans bed company. You have a choice of warmer or lighter duvets to suit your preference.
