About the Owner

We are a British/Icelandic family living in England. We live in a boarding school and go to Iceland as often as we can to our wonderful cottage. It is the most beautiful place on earth and wonderful at all times of the year. Winter is crisp and often snowy, the northern lights dance on top of the mountains as we sit snugly inside watching them. We hope you will love it as much as we do.

Guestbook comments from the manager

"There cannot be a house anywhere in Iceland with a more sheltered position and more stunning view than here? It's incredibly beautiful."

"..Despite being here through a fairly bad storm with lots of snow, we were lovely and toasty. It was so romantic we found it hard to leave the cottage at all."

"Iceland has been full of wow moments for us. But the biggest wow moment at the end of the week was the feeling we had when we arrived and looked out of the big kitchen windows! It's an amazing place."

Relaxing cottage, well equipped and great location

  • 4 of 5

Gunnu Hus was a fantastic find: very well equipped, clean cottage with plenty of space for children, plus in wonderful peaceful location which was perfect for exploring so much of this wonderful country. The owners, Gudrun and Fergus, could not have been more helpful and hospitable.

Great cottage on a lake near Reykjavík

  • 5 of 5

This was a great rental on Lake Medalfell about 30 min from Reykjavík. The house has a nice wrap around deck and it sits on the lake. My son-in-law spent the long Icelandic summer evenings fishing for trout. The location is also convenient if you plan drive the Golden Circle and very close to Þingvellir National Park. The house comfortably accommodated 6 adults (3 bedrooms). It was very clean and had a good selection of kitchen supplies as well a nice washing machine and dryer. Gudrun was very nice, and she was easy to contact by email and phone. She made us feel very welcome and at home. This was one of the most enjoyable vacations I've had. I would not hesitate to stay here again. Perfect !

Stunning location and beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this beautiful cottage for 10 days, the views are absolutely out of this world, stunning is an understatement. We also got to see the amazing aurora on more than one night. I cannot recommend this property highly enough. Gudrun was an absolute pleasure to deal with too. Amazing stay would love to go back.

Loved It

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in Gunnu Hus. Comfortable and homely place in a great location in a great country. What a view to look out on every day. We managed to see the Northern Lights but missed the whales. Did the Golden Circle over two days, stunning.

beautiful, calm, quiet and romantic.

We had such an amazing time in Iceland, totally fell in love with the country and this cottage. It was so nice to go exploring in the day, and then return to our own piece of tranquillity. It has a homely feel and incredibly warm and inviting.

I'd go again, in a heartbeat.

The cottage belonged to my grandparent's. My granddad built it in the mid sixties and it's always been a part of my life.

Coast/Beach:

The nearest beach is in Hvalfjördur (Whalefjord) it is a 5 to 10 min drive. You may see a whale there, or catch a fish, but you're not going to get much of a suntan. The road round Hvalfjord is thrilling to drive: it is Jeremy Clarkson's favourite road in the world, or so he said. The mouth of the Lax River has a spectacular salmon run, which you can see from the road bridge (10 minutes from the cottage).

Kaffi Kjós is a general store, pub and restaurant a 10 minute's walk along the lakeside road. It is open during the summer months and on a few selected dates during winter. There is a wonderful swimming pool in Mosfellsbær called Lágafellslaug; it has a 25 metre pool with lots of lanes, 3 water slides, a sauna, steam bath and hot pots. It charges no more than around £2 for adults and half that for children. Highly recommended.

Facilities

From the Owner

The walks are wonderful, there is fishing in the lake and the surrounding rivers although you will need to purchase a licence. We swim regularly in the lake and often go on day trips to attractions near by. The Thingvellir National Park is only half an hours drive away and we have walked there in 6-7 hours, The Hvalfjördur (Whalefjord) is a stones through away and is one of the most beautiful fjörds in Iceland ( the road along the fjörd was voted the best driving road in the world by the presenters of Top Gear) The highest waterfall in Iceland Glymur, is ten minutes drive from the cottage and a wonderful walk. Gullfoss(the Golden Waterfalls) Geyser and the Thingvellir national park can all be easily visited in a day. (Just over an hours drive). And many many more.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Guests can easily buy internet access (via a dongle) at any phone shop in Reykjavik; it is relatively cheap. Mobile phone reception at the cottage is excellent and there is a little pub / shop called Kaffi Kjós, 800 metres down the road, which is open all summer and on or selected dates during winter. It has a full license, a bar and a restaurant, is a general store, and the people who run it are very friendly. Outside: The garden stretches down to the lake with access to the water's edge. There is a large south facing terrace with a dining table and chairs. There is a gas barbecue. There is a spa bath pool (from Feb 2017) heated with geothermal hot water piped from a hot spring up the valley. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Professionally laundered linen and towels are included, guests are expected to leave the cottage in the same state that they found it. The check out time is 10 am and check in is 2pm unless otherwise arranged.
