Cottage With Breathtaking Views Of The Fowey Estuary

Overview

Property

Updated: 25-Nov-2016
Cottage in Golant, on the Fowey estuary, Cornwall - Excellent location for a relaxing holiday or as a base to visit Cornwall's many attractions.

Cascade holiday cottage is set in a breathtaking location within the quaint and pretty village of Golant, an area of outstanding natural beauty, just two miles upriver from the historic coastal town of Fowey. The cottage has two large double bedrooms and is ideal for 2 to 4 persons. The cottage enjoys stunning uninterrupted views of the Fowey river and its surrounding ancient woodlands. This is a great base from which to explore the very best of Cornwall. Golant is known for its wonderful location and stunning views across the Fowey estuary. The tides are continually changing and provide an ever-changing backdrop and a fascination to watch. The Cottage is set in its own large and established gardens, with its own private steps up to Gumms Lane (provide access to the Golant Downs and the Saints Way) and also private steps down to Water Lane below (provide access to the quay, river and sandbars).

"We stayed during half term week. The setting itself here is truly beautiful - the kind of view you should bottle & sell (if only!). A truly lovely view, thank you for letting us enjoy the cottage

Wonderfully peaceful location, fantastic view!

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay at the cottage: Bob was very helpful both before and after our visit and his directions to get there were accurate (narrow lanes!) and clear. The cottage itself is clean, well appointed and comfortable. The location just above the river is very peaceful - the loudest sound at night was that of owls hooting occasionally - and views from the upper bedroom and sitting room are superb. We could sit and watch the tide ebb and flow, canoeists on the river, the goods train passing now and again - very tranquil and relaxing. Not too far to walk into Fowey along the Saints' Way and close to plenty places to visit - the Eden project, Bodmin Moor, Truro and the attractions on the North Coast in particular. A great place to stay - would highly recommend it.

Wonderful cottage to watch the world go by.

  • 5 of 5

Just home after a wonderful week at 'Cascade'. We were lucky with the weather to make the most of the garden and the wonderful view of sailing life on the estuary. Cottage is an ideal size with everything you need. The view from the main bedroom is wonderful on a morning with the sun rise. Kayaking and SUP with 'Encounter' below the cottage another must do for the adventurous. Bob the owner gave good customer service and overall very highly recommended rental as it was also recommended to me by a colleague.

Fantastic cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our second stay here and just as fabulous as the first. The cottage is well equipped with everything you need for your stay. The gardens and view are spectacular and it is very peaceful. We were blessed with hot sunny weather and made the most of the River and the peace. The local pub is about 100 yards away and serves good food, or is nice to sit out with a cold drink. Most of Cornwall is easily accesible although the satnav will take you off main roads to go down tiny lanes to rejoin the original main road later on! The steep hill and narrow lanes to Cascade can be challenging, but once you get there it is worth it. A fabulous place to stay. Bob is a pleasure to deal with and replies very quickly to any questions.

Hard to beat!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Cascade with my mum for a week. The cottage is well equipped and spotlessly clean with everything you need for self catering. As the photos show, the view is fabulous and uninterrupted. This is one of the best self catering properties I have stayed in. It's location makes it hard to beat! The village and the cottage are built on the side of a steep hill so you do need to be fit and able to manage the inclines when walking in the village and to manage the steps to/from the cottage. For a more level walk there's a beautiful path along the hillside following the river, just 2 mins away from the cottage. The upstairs master bedroom has its own balcony/terrace and is a wonderfully light room (do take an eye mask if you want a lie in!) with a very comfortable double bed for a great nights sleep. The second bedroom is on the ground floor off the lounge and has two single beds. This room is at the rear and remains quite dark all day although the electric radiator soon warmed the room up. We found Golant a good location from which to reach lots of interesting places to visit. The approach to the parking bay is extremely narrow which we found challenging at first even in a small car but by the end of the week we were adept at navigating tiny spaces as most of Cornwall is like that! Bob the owner was great at keeping in touch and very prompt to refund our deposit. He repaired a door we had a problem with, coming out himself to repair it the very same day so it didn't interfere with our holiday at all. Having free wifi was a massive plus, particularly as the mobile signal was very patchy (I'm with Vodafone, others may be better). There's a pub in Golant that serves food (we didn't try it but heard its good) however there's no shop so it's best to take food with you to cover your first few days. I would recommend Cascade to anyone seeking a peaceful retreat in a stunning location.

Location

From the Owner

Cascade Cottage has been in Bob's family for a very long time and was originally an open field used by his grandfather to park a caravan for his holidays. Over many years the caravan became a house, was extended on both sides, passed down through the generations, and in 2012 was split into two properties of which Cascade is now our family holiday cottage. We hope that we can keep the cottage as a forever home, and to let the property out for holidays to cover running costs and give others an opportunity to enjoy this magical setting.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

The Fowey Estuary provides many activities including beaches, walks, fishing and boating. Encounter Cornwall is based just below our cottage and provides kayak hire or beginner kayak lessons along the river and the numerous waterside creeks.

Coast/Beach:

River walks are available immediately beside the cottage.

The surrounding beaches are 3 miles travel.

Travel:

Car travel is recommended. The alternative would be a 3 mile taxi journey from Par railway station. The lane access to our private parking is narrow and so please check with the owners beforehand if planning to bring a particularly large car (as a guide anything larger than a standard people carrier could be challenging). There is alternative pay and display parking below the cottage.

Distances:

Cormorant hotel (restaurant) and the Fishermans Arms (real ale village pub) are both within a two minute walk.

Fowey is 3 miles by road.
